I Sent a Text (SMS) to a Land line Number

I thought that sending a text to a land line phone number would generate an error message.
I think I saw this when I was using IOS a while back. I was texting my friend's home phone and wondering why he did not respond.

Do different phone OSes work differently?

When text a landline they get a message on hp.

when I text a landline the landline rings and reads out the message when I answer. A while back, in work, me and my mate would send text messages to the fax machine and laugh our ar*es off when it started reading it out loud in the office.
