I think there will be no Nexus 6 event

Having a good camera is extremely important to myself. This RE Camera is very small though and more practical in some areas. I'm waiting to see the Nexus camera (assuming it's Verizon) before I even seriously think about it though.

I have a nice dedicate digital SLR camera for when I KNOW I want to take good pictures... but for the most part I am the type of person who doesn't wear a watch and doesn't like having anything outside my wallet and phone in my pockets.... I don't even carry my house keys with me (Mostly because I park in the garage and never actually NEED my key)

I just really like to limit the amount of crap I have to carry around with me.... Even small and compact in nature... I don't want to have to carry another device around if I can help it...

The Nexus 5 camera is okay for basic every day "Hey look at that" type of pictures..... Nothing I'd try and show off in a gallery or anything... but it does enough to be okay.... an improved shooter would be a nice upgrade...

A lot pf current phones have the exact same Sony sensor. The difference comes down to software, or custom image processing chips in HTC.

With the new Camera2 API in L, apps will have full control of the camera pipeline with full control and RAW support. Therefore I expect you can get an app to fix camera issues. Even the much maligned GNexus had a decent sensor, its just that Android till now has been absolutely terrible in its camera support.

Check out the RE Camera they just previewed on AC. The need for good cell phone cameras isn't as dire assuming you have a couple hundred bucks to spend on this handy little shooter.

Like others have said, the issue is that I don't want to carry two devices. My wife and I each always want a good camera on us to take pictures of the kids. It's just not practical to have a standalone camera, and it doesn't make sense when phones are available with good cameras.

I'm optimistic that the new camera API with L will help, but I don't think it's a given.

Good to know. Now, in addition to checking this forum every hour, I can go to the Play Store on alternate half hours (not obsessed).
I literally used the heavy as all can be lumia 920 I had to spam the enter button for me with all it's weight so I can order the nexus lol. Best thing that phone ever did for me.

Google Nexus 6 What a poor launch

When will Google learn how to do a proper launch? This is their flagship device, on the biggest release of Android ever, on all carriers for the first time ever! And what do we get ?

- no official event, just a blog post
- no explanation of features for the phone or L, leading to mass confusion and slow trickling of news from various random blogs
- not a single review hours before launch
- pre orders open with no information about carrier vs Play store differences
- mass confusion and speculation with no official word fro Google or their launch partners

Previous Nexus launches were also disasters, with similar confusion on availability, going out of stock etc.

If there was one thing they need to learn from Apple, this is it.

Re: What a poor launch

This isn't meant to be (and never was) a general consumer phone with lofty sales goals. L has already been detailed, a giant part of Google I/O explained it. The Nexus line isn't trying to compete with Apple, or Samsung.. or anyone. That's not what it is about. While I understand the frustration with information being difficult to find, the goal isn't the same as a consumer device. They're not trying to sell you one. They're making it available if you choose to buy it. I think that considering it from the context of the difference in those circumstances may be the key to understanding how/why the release is different than a typical flagship from an OEM trying to generate sales.

Nicely put. And I have to agree. Remember the Nexus 6 is being made by Motorola, and in the past was LG I believe.

Google is a huge company with tons of money in their coffers. And is ranked as one of the most valuable brands in the world. Not selling as much nexus phones as Samsung and their Galaxy line is not their ultimate goal.

Someone did post in another thread that they called a Google rep and got some clarification on the differences on carrier nexus 6 and playstore version, etc. Take a look

Re: Google Nexus 6 What a poor launch

I actually like/prefer the whole no "Event" and just a blog post way of doing things...

I know I am in the minority here but I look forward to diving head first into Lollipop without any real list of features and upgrades... I use to love to root and mess around so for me it's fun to go at it blind and figure stuff out (and return here to see what others have found)

See above.. Don't need a review... look forward to doing my own hands on with this massive monster of a device

The device just cleared the FCC on October 24.... As I've seen on several pages once that was done they could now LEGALLY sell the device.. I am sure this had something to do with just a preorder date and no official launch date... I'll be paying cash money for an unlocked 64 gig device from the play store as I did last year.... If it's like the Nexus 5 there was no difference between the play store version and the version sold by Sprint or T-Mobile..... (outside 16 vs 32 gig)

Hardware sales are still a very minority part of the Google business but you are correct... they could do a better job on this end... They are a search engine company and 90% of their revenue and profits come from search... Hardware is just a very small piece of their puzzle... It should be done better.... I'll preorder tomorrow but I don't expect the device to ship until at minimum the first week of November and I lean more towards a mid November SHIP date.... but I could be wrong.... Maybe it ships before the end of the week? I just can't see it shipping before the Nexus 9... That seemed to be more of the true launching pad for Android Lollipop....

Apple does a lot of things right.. they get their hardware ready to launch and ship real close to the same time... But they have had "Events" and showed off their devices without a true concrete ship date.... but no where near as bad as this... Last year went smooth... I ordered my Nexus 5 the day they said it would be ready for sale and it shipped that same day... I just had to wait until Monday because I took two day shipping on a Thursday that carried over to Monday.... but they announced (via a blog post) started selling and shipping in what two days???

Seems the Nexus 6 was a little behind.... there were rumors that Android L wasn't ready yet and that is why there was only a blog post.. I think it was "The Verge" who's brief hands on at Google said they were told not to click on certain apps yet.... So it sounds like as far back as last week it wasn't fully ready or they were hiding something for us at launch....

Tough crowd around here some times.... I bet it will be an amazing device.... I look forward to powering it on soon....

Re: Google Nexus 6 What a poor launch

Google isn't trying to take the world by storm with the nexus line. They will strategically break into the market with the nexus their own way, not yours. While you're frustrated and most of what you said is true, I bet you're still searching for nexus news/info online and you'll still purchase the phone. Google is making ad money from all the internet traffic created by the "confusion" and will still get your money when the phone is released. I'm not trying to attack you personally, but I've been lurking on the nexus forums for a while now and noticed that you constantly create new threads complaining about something or stating your doubts about a phone that hasn't even been released yet. The phone will be released soon enough, be patient.

Re: What a poor launch

I understand its a Nexus and sales goals are not the same. But for the first time, Google is actively marketing Android, and making a real effort to get it in everyone's hands. They are going for a premium device with no compromises, decided to get out of the cheap off contract device market.

They don't need to have a splashy marketing event. All I want is basic info and to be transparent. Every online forum and blog is full of questions w.r.t compatibility, working with carriers, boot loaders etc. All of this can be addressed in a single blog post and remove all confusion. They can lift the embargo on reviews so people have something to go on before preorders start.

This is all pretty basic stuff, we're all loyal Android fans who just want some simple answers.

Re: What a poor launch

While I understand the frustration with information being difficult to find, the goal isn't the same as a consumer device.

I disagree...... The premium build and premium price along with a launch on all major US Carriers points to they are actually pushing a consumer device this time around..... Before it was mostly a play store exclusive and you could order it from a retailer... Maybe... With the Nexus 5 they did a little more of a push towards carriers with Sprint and T-Mobile... but I rarely saw them in a physical store..

It sounds like this sucker is going to be right there on the shelf at T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile and even Verizon side by side next to the Note 4 and iPhone 6+.....

Even Google execs have said they feel once you put your hands on a large device you are not going to want to go back to a smaller device... So they seem to be pushing this one more than before...

but I've been wrong before............

I agree. It's very different from any previous Nexus, yet being launched in a very poor manner with no information. Why bother with getting US carrier support if you can't even give out info on how it will work?

I'd be a little surprised to see this in an AT&T or Verizon store, but it would be welcome. One thing a friend said that I think is also a great observation: "Google wants to be the face of Android now, instead of leaving that to the partners. To do that, they need to sell a lot of them". This is a pretty compelling argument, IMO and could be a strong justification for increasing carrier availability, etc. If more people see "pure Google", more people could want that and that could lead to better design decisions from OEM's as they implement their versions of Android.

Google will do fine without just word of mouth advertising - they aren't trying to take the number one sales spot with this model, but rather to showcase android evolution which will be available on most current and nearly any new android device to launch going forward.

Also, Google wants to maintain a neutral status without favoritism with all of its OEM partners. It would be difficult to heavily promote the nexus 6 without a common perception coming about that Google is saying Motorola makes the best android devices.

I'll be up anyway and will check because I'm curious, but there's no way pre-orders open at 12am Oct 29 as some people are hoping !!

9 am Pacific time seems likely, just like the blog post announcing the phone. We'll see.

Why are there so many questions still unanswered with all these Google employees in this forum? You guys know Google's motives, intentions, and goals, but can't tell me some basic info? :)
