I thought Thunderbolt had 8 GB Internal Storage

Just to explain something here. I have the Motorola Atrix it has 16gb internal storage, after the operating system and all of the apps pre installed, it leaves me with 10gb of space.
I don't know how that is sold. But the Verizon Wireless Thunderbolt clearly says 8GB but that actual capacity may be less after formatting. It does not say "the actual capacity may be significantly reduced because we've decided to dump a whole lot of crap on it too."

Nobody in the store knew about this problem. Absurd. Perhaps denial. This is a problem for them. If it wasn't, you'd have had some type of announcement by now since the cat is now long out of the bag.

spoke with tier 2 support... nothing puts a bigger grin on my face then when I have a company's customer rep stumbling over their words because they know what I am saying makes perfect sense and what their company is doing is completely wrong....

...supposedly a higher up will be calling me tomorrow to further discuss the problem

..we'll see how that goes, I'll keep you guys posted

It has 8 GB. It never said '8 GB user accessible'. It just says 8 GB. (it should also be noted that that 8GB is NOT user accessible.)

Blame the ignorance of the buyer for not actually understanding that that 8 GB is used for system storage too. The internal memory has never been billed as anything except for that; the microSD is specifically billed as storage memory.

Its not a problem. Just some other thing for hyper-sensitive people to ***** about instead of enjoying their new phones. Seriously guys; if there is a problem, it'll be fixed. If you fill up that 2GB before then, you have other problems to worry about.

why are you defending VZW so hard??

yes it said 8gb with the little disclaimer yada yada

but that doesnt mean that they can advertise 8gb and then load it up with junk you have to pay to use and cannot delete...

...its just wrong... and thats the bottom line

if you want to use those apps then download them from the market, they shouldn't be shoved down our throats after we paid hundreds for the phone

i recall buying a 20gb xbox 360 back in 2004... sure didnt have 20gb of space...
i recall buying a couple laptops over the past couple of years... none of them had the 250 or 500gbs available that they said they did...

gtf over it. FREE 32gb microsd card.

I'm sure when you go pickup a 32gb iphone youll find that you actually have access to 38gb of storage... right?

what you said made 0 sense

and there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between a 20gb xbox having 18gb

or a 500gb drive having 495gb

and then 8gb going down to 2gb cuz they INTENTIONALLY LOADED IT WITH JUNK YOU CANNOT DELETE

and that "free" sd card was not free, its factored into the price of the phone

nothing is ever free

Its not wrong. Not in the slightest. Annoying? Yeah. But it isn't wrong.

The phone has 8GB of eMMC onboard. Nowhere does it make any claims about how much is user-accessible or even IF it is user accessible.

Seriously guys, find a damn hobby.

You're wrong. Fairness in the marketplace is required. It means that consumers must have a fair way of being able to comparison shop. How is a consumer supposed to know that the 32GB SD card they purchase may have 20GB of non-removable manufacturer third party presentations? If this is the case, the manufacturer is required to disclose this fact to the public so they can make an educated choice before purchase. With regard to 32GB actually formatting to only 29.7 GB, it says quite clearly (due to law and reasonable disclosure) that the card does have a capacity of 32GB but common formatting results in a different amount that virtually anyone can ascertain and assume by using these devices.

No - it's a real problem. I have 23GB of music I transferred from my Incredible, which had 8GB in it. If I'm going to record high definition video, I'd like to have at least a full hour of recording time and do it to the internal drive, which is faster, with room to spare. If I had known that I had a fraction of the 8GB, I may have waited for the Bionic instead, as may have many other people.

Most of all, it's just not right to advertise a promise to deliver 8 loaves of bread in a grocery store order and, for the same money, deliver just 3. If that's fair, let me know your contact information. I have plenty of stuff to sell you and underdeliver.

Wow...just wow. The internal memory of this device is in fact 8 GB. The removable SD card can reach a maximum capacity of 32 GB type 4 storage.

The phone dumps were only 200 mbs approximately because they do not take into consideration the actual usage of storage space by apps pre-installed on the phone.

Now, lets look at what is eating up your 8 Gigs, that has you all up in a bunch. (Most of this has been stated before...)
-VZ Navigator
-the golf game
-android OS
-Sense 2.0
-Rockband
-All of the widgets
-All of the skins and profiles
-Blockbuster
-Camera software
-Utility applications such as settings and music
-The browser is 10megs
-flash is big

All of this stuff adds up. There may be a slight calculation error in the amount of open space... but when you really get down to it...

YOU HAVE 40GB of STORAGE SPACE ON THIS PHONE. Why complain about missing a few?
Saying you want to sue, or are pissed because they say 8 and you only get 3 usable is absurd.

Facts: You don't need 23 Gigs of music on your phone. Wait for the Bionic and its extra 6gb of onboard storage, Motoblur eats that up worse than sense.

Sure it sucks if you had planned to fill every last bit of space on the phone, but when it comes down to it, files can easily be stored via cloud services, or by plugging it into your computer.

I dont really think it has anything to do with what/how you may or may not use up the space.

It has to do with the fact that they put something on there that you cannot delete.

They sold you the device, it is now yours. You should be free to decide what can and cannot stay on there.

If it came preinstalled but was possible to be deleted I would have no problem.

Its the fact that you can't delete it that pisses me off.

Theres an app on the market called mini info... It reads internal memory...SD card memory ... Ram memory and, battery life.... It says the phone has 2.6 GB total and 2.4 GB left... What do u guys think? Is that accurate?

Now I tried the same same app on the Incredible and it reads 748mb of internal memory which is only the memory that we have for apps... So maybe this is what the 2.4GB is?

Im guessing it is a read and report bug. It will probably be fixed...and if not, 32 GB SD card.

When I root it in the next few weeks, ill be able to see exactly how much is going where, and why.

Yeah its very weird.... Why do u think we can't access internal memory when connected to a pc ?

The specs from HTC show this only has 4gb internal memory... this would make more sense as well with what we are seeing.

I didn't really want to get into this conversation but I would like to point out that the full RUU system dump is only 482.2MB. And all of those things you just listed are in that RUU as well as everything else.

Clearly the OS and bloatware aren't taking up 5.5GB.

So OP's question is valid: Where is the missing 5 or 4GB?

The system files has taken up 5.4GB of internal memory space, thus 2.4GB is the free space available, which should be enough for our purposes. Besides we can move most of the apps to the removable sdCard.

No it hasn't.

At best, its unpartitioned, unused space sitting in limbo.

At worst, its false advertising, and I forsee someone suing Verizon.
