I stopped at a Verizon store to put my hands on a Pixel 2. I was most interested in the Pixel 2 XL. I picked it up, played around with it, gave it a squeeze. As if I needed anymore convincing, this just wrapped it all up for me. The S8+ hardware is much nicer, minus the fingerprint sensor. I've grown used to the terribly placed fingerprint sensor though.
Google could have gone farther with their design. It's just boring. It looks like a next-gen Nexus 6P to me with the dual speakers. I'm spoiled by the S8's rolled screen edges which makes the bezels on the 2 XL seem dated. It looks like a 2016 phone, not a 2017 into 2018 phone.
And that squeeze... I kept squeezing all the buttons on the right side of the phone. It seems to me you will have to learn to squeeze in a way you won't be pressing buttons. I think you are supposed to carefully place a finger between the power and volume buttons and presss your palm against the left side. It's probably like learning where to put your finger on the S8 sensor.
Not a terrible phone but I'm glad i cancelled my order.
