I wanna know your opinions about the notch.

Is the notch bad?

Look at the left and right borders... Things are lost (unless it's a changing scene).

That video shouldn't play with bars on the edges by default.

Try the same with a legit 16:9 video still

The Pixel 3 XL screen doesn't extend as far on the bottom as on the top - the bezel on the bottom is fairly large.

It's very difficult to see as the phone is black.

I've re-examined both images which are the exact same 16:9 content on-screen - no part of the image has been lost when you go to full screen with the exception of the notch.

EDIT: the S7 Edge vs the Pixel 3 XL are not at the exact same timestamp in the comparison picture - one is slightly ahead of the other.

That image was more to show the viewable image area of the Pixel 3 XL with the notch hidden.

The S7 Edge has pretty large top & bottom bezels:

It’s not a big deal at all. I had the iPhone X for a year and now the Xs Max. Trust me, this is just overblown. I ordered the 3XL And cannot wait for it.

exactly!! The notch is media fodder. after a few times you don't even see it any longer.

I'm debating the 3XL vs. Note 9 vs. iphone XL. Seems like the iphone has the biggest screen for video content but I'm not sure about the notch. When I am watching videos, are the screen sizes actually 6.5 inches or is it less with the notch? What about the Pixel XL 3? Is it really 6.3 inches or more like 5.5 if you hide the notch?

Seriously...go to the store and hold them. I have the x, xs max and now the pixel 3xl. this is media fodder...and a forum for people, who think they know better, to get up on a soapbox. its always interesting to read stuff from people who 'know' this could be avoided, rather than consider a multi billion dollar company with millions in research, might have a reason...or a plan. Always consider the source of the comments... and just go hold them.

I don't mind it at all in normal usage.

When viewing YouTube or other video content in full screen it's pretty obtrusive...

sure...when you stare at it. The sun gets pretty intrusive too, if you stare at it. I'm not saying its ideal. Just saying it probably shouldn't be the speaking point it might be made up to be.

Two places the notch comes into play with a Pixel:

1) Notification icons
2) Watching a video

With the iPhone notch, only video is the problem. Unfortunately due to the nature of the notification icons in Android, notch comes into our ways more than we think.

Fair enough.

Notch aside, there's a lot to love about this phone.

I use a mostly black background and won't even notice it. I'll appreciate the notifications being used in that space.

This right here . I don't even notice the notch being there .

Sadly it's getting very tedious listening to all the whiners . Folks if you don't like it , don't freaking buy it ,if you bought it and don't like it return the damn phone . Good lord . Rant over:p

So you're complaining about people giving their opinion about the notch on a thread that is asking for opinions.

The notch is one aspect of a phone. Some may love everything about the 3xl and despise the notch but choose to deal with it.

Personally I don't care for notches. I'm glad phones like the Pixel and V40 allow you to hide it.

I did get some time with the 3 and the 3XL at Best Buy and the notch is ugly. I'm not on a soapbox and I don't know more than anyone else. I'm just simply stating my opinion.

I wanted to give the 3XL a chance since I thought having a larger screen might be nice but I just can't get past that ugly notched screen. Maybe I'll come around and decide it's tolerable but right now, I'm not sold on it.

Disagree. Aside from the softer focus of the top set of images, both zoomed and non-zoomed frames look the same to me.

It's understandable that the majority of 3XL owners are ok with the notch else they wouldn't have bought one but I wonder how many Pixel 3 owners are enabling a software notch via the developer option that allows this? You know, because the notch is such a non-factor or unnoticeable after a few minutes of usage. :P

Sorry...soapbox wasn't directed at anyone specific...more the media types...the youtube reviewers, who all have an opinion. I was on a NOTE....and didn't move to the iPhone X because of the notch. Always the notich..Notch notch notch. Look at the notch. Try it. Try the photos and videos and facebook and what ever...do some stuff NOT thinking about the notch. And maybe it just disappears....kind of like pink elephants....thats all I was implying.

I'm still waiting on my 3XL to arrive, so I enabled the notch on my 2XL. So far I'm not liking it...

Enabling a notch on a phone that doesn't have one is absurd. It's not the same thing and doesn't look the same

Exactly. There is a lot going on behind the scenes to make the notch work and blend in, especially if you use a dark theme.

I would prefer no notch, but the notch does not bother me bit.
