I wanna know your opinions about the notch.

Is the notch bad?

Re: How to disable the notch in Google Pixel 3 XL?

Best way to disable the notch is to buy a Pixel 2 XL....

Re: How to disable the notch in Google Pixel 3 XL?

There is an app in the Play store that blacks out the sides of the notch and makes the font white so it actually blends things much better. It's called Nacho Notch.

I'd like to see them implement hiding the notch while keeping the icons at the top.

The Pixel 3XL Notch is pretty much hidden by default in most apps anyway

Hey, All....

I have noticed that on my pixel 3XL, the notch space is reserved for notifications, and the app real estate only comes up to the bottom of the notch anyhow. It's not like than that is getting in the way or being obtrusive to what I would normally see in a regular app.

I don't quite understand what the fuss is. Also, if you're watching a video in the proper aspect ratio it won't flow past the notch anyhow - Unless you zoom in.

Hhmm...

Those both appear to be correct

Hopefully the solution Google has will let 2 rows of notifications be seen in the bunny ears area. Can't wait to get my 3 XL in 2 days!

I'm sure they will patch the software if their are enough complaints.

After some research, I found the fairly popular app "Nacho Notch" does just this - black out the notification bar notch area to hide it without wasting screen real estate.

I found myself wondering why Google didn't setup their hide notch function this way from the get-go and I think I know why. This reminds me of how when the Galaxy S8 initially launched, there was an option to black out the on-screen navigation bar and have white buttons on it. Not even a week after launch, people were complaining about burn-in, and so Samsung released a patch that removed the option to black out the notification bar, and now you only use white or various other off-white and pastel color options as notification bar colors.

The point is that a high contrast blacked out notification status bar with white nubmers and letters will probably cause burn-in, and Google is trying to get ahead of this issue...especially after some burn in complaints on the Pixel 2 XL last year. Having the notification bar area change colors and whatnot as you use different apps will prevent burn-in. This is pretty smart by them, but the whole issue just goes to show that still...they shouldn't have made the notch so big. Resources would have been better used to just make the bezels slightly smaller with no notch, and retaining the dual cameras and front facing speakers.

Upon finding the app Nacho Notch, I almost canceled my Pixel 3 order and ordered the Pixel 3 XL. Then I remembered the burn-in issues I had on my S8 with the black navigation bar (which slowly reversed over time after getting rid of the white on black bar), and decided against the XL. Overall, the whole notch thing is a failure on Google's part in my opinion, all for the sake of a wide angle selfie cam.

Well no I don't think disabling the notch is a good idea. Disabling it wastes too much screen real esate and keeping it on but blacking it out with nacho notch will cause burn-in. If you get the 3 XL, you best option is just to deal with a silly looking unbalanced phone.

If I really wanted a phablet, I'd pass on the 3 XL and either get the S9+ for $200 less if you want a good camera, or get the OnePlus 6t for $350 less if you want a stock phone with quick updates. Or if you just are itching to spend $900, just wait for the S10+ which will have an in-screen fingerprint reader and dual or triple cameras. Luckily I don't like phablets so the Pixel 3 will suit me well.

I love the Pixel phone and the cameras seem great, but "dealing with" that silly looking notch just isn't worth it when you can get the S9+ or OnePlus 6t for $200 and $350 less, respectively.

People in this forum will apologize over and over for Google, but I'm at least glad that most major tech reviewers aren't falling for this. Google listened to a lot of people's complaints about the Pixel 2 XL, so it'd be better to just vote with your wallet and give feedback rather than to apologize constantly. This is just classic fanboyism that happens every time Samsung/Google/Apple launches a phone. I wouldn't get the Pixel 3 XL and it's notch any more than I'd buy the exploding Galaxy Note 7.

You still keep all those .. I sell them once I move on to new devices. Probably three max at any point with me after that signal to get rid of some devices.

I won't apologize for the notch, but then I don't find that it's a big deal. I've played with it at Best Buy and I don't see what the big deal is. But, that is only my opinion, everyone has one. I like that I'm getting more screen.

I've had plenty of phones over the years (Blackberry, Motorola, Samsung and Sony) and once I found the Nexus 6P I discovered the phone experience I want. It's simple, gives me the basics and let's me add what I want.

So for those people where the notch isn’t a big deal or those who like the design they are apologists. Just agree you don’t like it while others do. Not everyone is a fanboy because they enjoy something you do not. I’m sure there’s things you like which I find would find silly as you put it. You don’t have to like it. Your not alone. But some people do and it’s ok.

I actually think notches look cool. Thought so from the start. I don't get the rectangular screen master race thing

I personally don't care about functional notch on phones but I guess it would look nice if it's 'not' there. I prefer samsung way due to symmetry.

I do not like notch's and if I wanted another larger phone it would not of stopped from getting it...and I either would have gotten used to it or hidden it...Having said that, I ordered the Pixel 3....partially because it has no notch.

I don't have much choice, I am only ever going to own Google phones.
