I was ALMOST able to buy a One today

I walked into the AT&T store by my work, and the guy had the One in stock, in his hand, ready to sell it to me. Except my upgrade isn't available until May 2nd. No problem, I said, there's a note on my account that AT&T will let me upgrade early due to various reasons that aren't important right now. Sorry, it's up to the individual store manager whether they'll let you upgrade early, and this store manager won't do it, whether there's a note on the account or not.

Sucks that you were that close to getting a One and failed, but if a manager wanted to take a hard line like that with me (especially given prior approval from the carrier), I wouldn't have ANY problem taking my money/business elsewhere and never looking back.

Because the store "takes a hit" if they allow the early upgrade. He wasn't very clear. He said it was a new policy as of a couple months ago. I called AT&T while in the store, and the guy on the phone was very happy to allow me to upgrade early, but I would have to buy it through him. But he can't take a pre-order, and he can't take an order until the 19th on release date.

Did you go to a *corporate* store? Or was it a dealer? That makes a difference, and sometimes it's hard to tell which is which. There's a dealer in our mall that looks JUST like a corp. store. Anyway, if my corp. store had any, they were willing to sell it to me...and my upgrade is 5-9.

Since my objective was to pre-order to get the free Media Link, I called AT&T on the way home from work (I was planning on stopping at another AT&T store on the way). I explained my problem and the guy offered to do the pre-order over the phone even though they "don't normally do that". He was super helpful and even got me one of the "out of stock" Media Link HD's for free. I'll get my One when the pre-orders ship. Mission accomplished, I didn't stop at my local AT&T store to try to pick one up today. I'd rather get the free swag and wait another couple days.
