If RAZR gets ICS, will it beat NEXUS?

Im highly considering a Rezound at this point. Better Camera, same screen quality (lcf vs amoled aside) and USB MASS Storage Support. Frankly the only thing holding me back is not knowing how well Adreno graphics will work with ICS.

I'm seriously considering the razr right now. Amazon has their 1 cent wireless deal goin on. VERY tempting.

When you think about it, there isn't really much need for additional development on a phone like the RAZR. First and foremost, it was released with an outdated OS. Second, Motorola knows they will be releasing their next latest and greatest phone in the next several months.

We know, similar to the iphone, that the Galaxy Nexus will be the only Nexus released by Google and its partners for at least a year.

Yeah, they are already talking about the RAZR 2 for early 2012. Something along the lines of what was released in China as the RAZR - 13mp camera, 4.5' HD screen, etc.

That doesn't surprise me. It is also why I don't think the manufacturers really care if the phone receives huge updates/upgrades to the latest operating system. Anyone who is purchasing one of these phones shouldn't go in expecting to see an upgrade to ICS anytime soon. If that is what they are looking for, they need to wait for a phone like the Nexus.

I picked up a razr last week, initially thinking I'd be returning it for a nexus. But I really like this phone. The thinness is so cool, and typical to a Motorola device, it just feels solid and well constructed. Now, I will concede that it is a bit too wide for me, and I don't exactly have small hands. It seems like the nexus at just a few mm narrower will be perfect.

Honestly the thing holding me back is the bootloader. After dealing with a fascinate for the past year, which still doesn't have gingerbread ota and has had all sorts off problems getting cm7 and miui to port properly, I told myself that the next phone I would get would be a nexus. I just like playing with software and like the idea of a hackable device that gets fast upgrades. If razr gets its bootloader unlocked and some sort if a dev community going during the next six Weeks, I'll keep it. But otherwise I think I'm going to the nexus. Its a much harder decision than I thought it would be though

So you think that the other phone manufacturers will be able to do OTA's of ICS to their devices before the end of the year?

I doubt it but it wouldnt be out of the realm of possibility. The os is out and I'm sure they are working on it. One of the main selling point for me was ICS, now its semi vanilla ICS. If the razr had a better screen and took better pictures I'd already have one ESP now that it has such a light skin on the os.

Can't the Rezound and Razr be rooted to pure ICS though?

Yes once a stock ics rom is out the rezound will most likely have one. The razr with its locked bootloader will be a little more difficult since it can only use the stock moto kernels.

The rezound looks like a great phone. I went and held one the other day and it felt great in hand and the screen looked amazing.

When an oem says their phone will get a firmware update 'soon', it takes 4 to 6 months.
They just say stuff like that to make you feel good about buying.

My experience is with the fascinate and charge. With the fasc, it started off with eclair and they officially said froyo will be soon. Took 6 months. With the charge, still on froyo 6 months later.

The razr will get ics sometime in May or June.

I think that samsung and moto( mainly) release so many phones so close together, that is why updates take so long. Plus you have to worry if they will just completely quit updating the phone after a few months since they have 6 new high ends out since the time you bought your phone.

Not with the qHD screen. Once you try an HD screen you won't go back.

Verizon must be behind this. Get everyone talking about ICS on their bloated devices so more people will cave in and buy them...just abandoning the Nexus. They never wanted to sell this phone, they just wanted to get the exclusive so no one else could sell it either.

Nice conspiracy theory... we believe you bro!

Wow, rather dramatic don't you think?

sigh. sad part is I think you're 100% serious.

One downside of buying a Moto or HTC now and waiting for ICS that I don't see mentioned: after ICS upgrade, those phones will have "extra" buttons - the hardware ones in addition to ICS's s/w ones. I think that would bug me, although there could be advantages, I guess ...

Phones with hardware buttons won't have software ones on the screen.

I hadn't caught that in reviews. More likely I read over it without it sinking in. Thanks.

Others may have posted these facts but i havent read through it all yet:

1. The Nexus is future proof for a little while.. sure the Razr will get ICS, but after that? Nexus phones typically get 2-3 major upgrades before they just cant handle it anymore. Look at the Nexus S... itll be first in line to officially get ICS after this phone launches.

2. The screen appears, both in videos and on paper, to be so much better. Also, on screen buttons add to the screen and as i said above, future proof the phone for future updates.

3. Development - No doubt other phones have great communities behind them, but seeing as how the Nexus is out of the box easy to jump into, the device will have tons of enhanced features and customizations to OS revisions that the Razr wont see for months. Plus this being the first Nexus on Verizon means more devs out there have an opportunity to get their hands on one... be it Gsm/Hspa+ or Cdma/Lte.

Ive always stuck exclusively to Nexus phones and ive never regretted that decision. Ive messed around with other Android phones through friends and family and i just wasnt impressed with Donut when i was on 2.1(Nexus One). I loved having Gingerbread(Nexus S) 6 months before everyone else. Ill surely love having other limited time exclusive updates as well. This is all coming from someone who wants cool new features and loves to beta test things.

If you just want a solid experience, like the form factor, dont have time to wait, or get a warm fuzzy feeling when you see robots, explosions, and high speed chases... The Droid Razr is more than capable.
