I'm calling it

So you don't have the time or energy to take an hour or 2 (mostly spent on reading instructions) to experience awesomeness? OK

No, it is the many more hours than that getting all my apps back in place, all my customizations within each app, all my music downloaded or pinned, etc. I would gladly spend that time if my phone was in dire need of it, or if there was any real "awesomeness" to be had.

I have considered rooting, since I rooted and ROM'ed my Droid. But, I have no desire to run a different ROM. There is no bloatware to get rid of. I don't need to overclock. I already have an app that allows me free wifi hotspot. I have not yet seen an app that I want that is root only. Titanium is nice, but even that I don't see any real need for. My phone is running smooth, only an occasional redraw after using a heavy app.

What would be the major benefit to me of going through even a few hours of messing with it this time? As I have discussed before, I am willing to be convinced, but I just don't see any significant benefit.

That takes about 5 minutes with Titanium Backup and maybe 5 minutes to set up your home screen. If you use something like Nova launcher that saves your settings (and thus, your home screens), it literally takes a second to restore.

I lay out plenty of benefits in my Don't Panic guide, I suggest you take it for a spin :).

I will say that if I was hearing that the 4.0.4 radios were any better than my 4.0.2 radios, I would go ahead and root and flash it. But, from what I am reading here, they are no better, and sometimes worse.

Mine are better, and I've been using all sorts of radio leaks for...3 months now? Those who say they are worse, well, I don't understand how they could be. That's more device specific. But I've had real and tangible results, and I know plenty of people--here--who have had the same.

Fyi this was never a number one phone on vzw. As with any android sold on vzw network if it doesn't have the Droid branding behind it its only a second class device. And vzw treats it like so. Also when folks walked into vzw and want a Android phone they look for eye candy not OS not specs. If its flashy it will sell.

Yes, I did look that over (if you recall us discussing it a few weeks back), but really almost none of it applies to me. That is true about Titanium, but does it really only take TBU five minutes to back everything up, even the first time? And five minutes to put everything, all the apps installed, back? That is much faster than it used to be.

It should take 5-10 minutes tops both ways. Unless I'm using Market Restore, setup literally takes 10 minutes tops. And that's a full wipe, finding the wallpaper I want, and restoring.

To put it in perspective, it's not nearly the PITA it was in my DINC days ;).

Well, that does seem like a tangible benefit. Right now, mine are pretty decent, but occasionally drop out. If it is really that fast with TBU, then the investment/reward ratio may be worth it.

If the OTA doesn't come soon, I may just do it. But as an attorney with two busy kids, it honestly is hard to find even a couple of hours together that are free for this type of thing.

It's easier when you're an unemployed/researching attorney ;).

As DM said.. unlocking, rooting, flashing a solid and highly customizable ROM, setting back up your apps, data, and settings... for a TOTAL noobie it should probably take 1-2 hours, and yes most of that will be reading easily understandable directions and taking your time with it.
For someone with more experience it can all be done in 20-30 minutes or so.

And ROMs have come a long way since what you remember. Something like AOKP has a plethora of features and options, well over a hundred themes, and, more importantly, is based completely off the pure AOSP 4.0.4 source, and will be re-based off any new source code within a few days of its release, rather than waiting months and months for an OTA. Plus you get to flash the updated radios right off the bat, which, regardless of what you've read, most people find to be a HUGE improvement.

But still... 1-2 hours of your time, or continue in your months-long forum whining and dozens of WHEREZ MY OTA threads. You decide what's a better use of your time, not us.

EDIT: Last part not directed at anyone... just the general whiner threads. I don't mean to offend.

I think you will find that I am not much of a whiner, and if I have ever mentioned the OTA at all, it is in relation to looking into whether I should root. I did look into it, and decided that the customizations in the ROM's don't seem that compelling to me. Maybe if and when I do take that step I will find I enjoy the tinkering, but I don't see much that wows me, really.

But if the consensus is that the radios are really better, I may do it eventually.

I will say this--a lot of what a rom can offer is hard to conceptualize until you actually get in there and start fooling around.

And would your unfounded, dubious guesses have pegged that 6 months in the Verizon Galaxy Nexus would be the only phone on the lowest version out of any officially supported ICS device? Read again that my bet is OTA Jellybean and let me know if you're still interested.

I take that bet too :) It will be a easy win for me let's double that wager

Not they don't have an hour. They do however have 5 months to whine about it in tech forums. Weird huh? :)

I think we are all well aware of where you stand on rooting and otherwise playing with your phone. But there are those of us who believe the updates should roll and should fix issues as posted by many people. Your whine comment sounds more like whine than people posting about legitimate issues.

For the record, I have two Gnex. On one I have changed to new ROM when it leaked way back. I have flashed AOKP ROM. I have flashed it back to stock twice. I have the time, I have tried it and still vehemently believe that Verizon, Google, and Samsung should have fixed the issues long ago. And neither of my phones have any of the issues except volume.

Oh, and I don't believe the desire or ability to spend hours playing with new ROM's entitles anybody to denigrate those who just want a phone to work as advertised.

But I guess if it makes anybody feel better to jump in and tell people every five minutes that they should not post if they choose not to follow that path then go ahead. I guess they just need a higher post count.

Lmao you have me figured out, sir. Gotta get that android central post count up :)

Regarding waiting for an update versus unlocking and doing things yourself, I believe I stated exactly how I felt about that above:

Said people probably should have exchanged their defective phones ages ago rather than sit idly by and hope everything gets fixed with an update. They could have exchanged them for another Nexus to see if the first one was defective, or for another phone altogether. If they did not do that.. then they decided to sit and wait for an update, and decided they were not going to unlock and do things on their own... 2 decisions. Nobody in the forums should feel bad for anyone who had options and made poor decisions. You have only yourself to blame if you're sitting on your hands with a phone that doesn't work the way you want it to. That's life. Don't sit by and think the world will take care of you, most of the time you'll end up SOL and very disappointed.

I remember when I first got my gnex and was plagued with crappy radios, took 1 hour out of my life to learn how to flash ROMs/Radios ect. I flashed the new 4.0.4 radios and now have a much better signal, and overall a much better experience with this phone. I'm one of those people who hate dealing with tech support and like finding solutions for myself, which flashing does for me and why I love Android.

I will agree with you there! I went from the 4.0.2 to a .4 ROM and flashed the newer radios. It improved for me dramatically. When the "OTA" was posted on the Google site, I flashed back to the original .2 and the radios to match, then updated using the ZIP. It took all of about 15 minutes. (Mostly because I am not an IT person and am Android self taught rookie of the year twice over and I double/triple check everything, thanks OCD) Then after about 10 more minutes all my stuff is back up and running for a grand total of 30 minutes. For me the OTA that was posted works flawless for me. I am still unlocked and rooted because that is my choice and preference. I did all this just to have the stock .4 from Verizon, but kept root in case I change my mind. That's the great thing about Android. You can change anything pretty much at anytime.

I fell for the 4.0.4 OTA thing too. I got frustrated when it didn't happen and flashed aokp. I am very impressed with this rom and the 4.0.4 radios seem to be working great.

Question: I have Titanium BU in my list of apps in the Play Store from way back, along with the pro key I purchased, but they are both root only. Is there a non-root version I can use to back up my non-rooted phone? If not, what would be the best option for backing up all my apps, settings and customizations?
