[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I checked my account immediately after my call. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was almost instant gratification. I just logged in to my account and it's still there. Slept for work tonight, I might have been dreaming but I'm not! Will monitor this closely. Thanks again!!!

That's really awesome for you! I can't believe they did it, either. You are one lucky son of a gun.

I wouldn't count on it happening again, but who knows if you get the right rep on the phone.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I actually went to BestBuy yesterday bought it from their mobile department.
To those reading this, Best Buy does not charge a fee if you downgrade your data plan and believe it or not, going from 2GB at $30/mo to unlimited data at $29.99/mo is considered a downgrade. Amazon wireless and Walmart do, as do some other 3rd party retailers and it is $400.

So don't try this with any other 3rd party retailer besides Best Buy unless you are certain they don't charge you a fee if you downgrade your data plan. It's only 1 penny less, but it is considered a downgrade to go from 2GB to unlimited and it has to do with the money they receive from Verizon.

The only other 3rd party that I know of that does not have the secondary $400 etf is Costco Wireless. Costco also has a 90 day return /exchange policy, though your contract is locked after 14 days regardless of where you bought it. The etf applies to certain changes to your account within 181 days of purchase

Just to be clear, what he means is if you want them to switch you back to unlimited, you have 14 days to do it. After that, it ain't happening.

That's true. Switching back to unlimited after 14 days is not allowed normally. If you accidentally miss the date still give it a try, but they are under no obligation to switch you back, so it would be extremely difficult.

But as always, possible. I got them to push my upgrade date 6 months once and got them to remove the activation fee once well after the 3 day period. So just depends on your luck, but I wouldn't take the risk of losing unlimited data.

Also, you have a 14 day trial period. After this time, your contract is locked for 2 years. Even if you returned the phone after 14 days, the 2 years contract is locked.

they used to be more liberal about waving activation fees and giving early upgrades. If you read the forums then you will see, those days are over.

Anything is worth a try, I agree, but they know they have an advantage with their 4G LTE network right now and that makes them less liberal with the concessions to subscribers.

True, but they offer unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE, something that att doesn't offer. Tmo and Sprint do, but their 4GLTE networks are much more limited plus they would cost more than Verizon for my uses.

That abs the fact that they have the best total network coverage makes it worth it to me. Why pay more for inferior service and coverage? If that means that I have to deal with Verizon following the books, so be it

So from this can I assume I don't have a current contract Big Red can cancel my unlimited? I am so scared to pull the trigger and loose the unlimited

Yes, but if you do it successfully, you are locked into another 2 year contract with unlimited data.

Yes, but there is no basis for thinking they will do that any time soon.

If you lose it and can't talk a rep into reinstating it, you can return the phone and
have it reinstated. But you have to do that BEFORE 14 days are up.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Very helpful info! I looked through many of the other responses but didn't see my question. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have two unlimited data smartphone lines - both available for upgrade since November 2012, so they're month-to-month right now. If I understand the process, I could do the following (all through Verizon online):

1. Order a 3rd line and get a smartphone with a 2gb plan.
2. Activate the smartphone on the new line.
3. Take one of my old dumbphones and activate it on the 3rd line, which removes the new smartphone from that line. Also change the 2gb data to pay-per-use.
4. Activate the new smartphone on one of my smartphone lines. This keeps the unlimited data intact. That line's set.
5. Transfer the upgrade from the other smartphone line to the dumbphone line.
6. Purchase another smartphone via the new dumbphone line upgrade.
7. Repeat steps 1-3 above.

It sounds like the right way to do it, but I haven't seen the month-to-month and the multiple lines addressed at the same time.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

(all through Verizon online)
I had to add my line over the phone because my plan includes an unlimited any mobile to any mobile voice promotion. If yours doesn't include any special promotions, then you should be able to do everything online.

1. Order a 3rd line and get a smartphone with a 2gb plan.
2. Activate the smartphone on the new line.
3. Take one of my old dumbphones and activate it on the 3rd line, which removes the new smartphone from that line. Also change the 2gb data to pay-per-use.

Yep, however you will need new SIM cards for the new phones when you activate them on the unlimited data lines. You can order those online or get them in the stores.

I would go ahead and transfer the other upgrade from the other unlimited data line and get an iPhone 5 and sell it on swappa to recoup the cost of the 3rd line.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for the advice androidluvr2. I don't think my plan has anything special other than unlimited data - so I probably could do it all online.

Great idea on the other upgrade option too. I was thinking I'd just have to eat the cost of the new line, but that would take care of that.

DNA is being dropped by Verizon. Retiring it

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Do you need that line for a tablet? I'm pretty sure the unlimited stays on the line only if a smartphone stays on the line, so what you are describing would likely cause you to lose unlimited.

Thanks, yes you are correct, I contacted them and that is what they said. I thought it might be a cheaper way to preserve an unlimited account that I'm not using currently. To downgrade it to an Tablet hence $10 / mo then if needed back up to a smartphone. Since I cant do this you'd have to keep it on a smartphone account and pay the smartphone rate.

In my region I think this year getting locked in once more will be worth it for me as long as I can keep unlimited. T-Mobile doesn't exist here yet and Verizon's speeds dominate the other three major carriers here. The only thing I am considering is switching to AT&T if the next Nexus also doesn't support CDMA, but Sprint and US Cellular are the only other two players here and they're both CDMA so I gain nothing from switching to them. I've never had any issues with Verizon services and if I can find a way to keep my Nexus love going with them as a carrier, especially if I can keep unlimited data, I'll gladly do so.

How do I order a SIM card online? I'm not seeing it on the Verizon website...
