[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

This may be a silly question (and I was unable to find an answer through several forums discussing this method of keeping UDP), but what happens if the old SIM card stops working? Can one simply order a new SIM card from Verizon and get the UDP transferred to the new SIM card or will UDP only remain as long as the original UDP SIM card is working? Also, is there any concern for never activating the new SIM cards? I received my phone from Best Buy yesterday and am reluctant to activate it because of these unknowns. Upgrading is more expensive but may be better for someone like myself who is risk averse. Thanks.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

The UDP can get transfered to a new SIM card. UDP is tied to the tel#. I've ordered a replacement SIM from Verizon a few times for my phone with the UDP, most recently in order to get a SIM with the NFC logic on it so I can use Isis. Verizon activated the SIM in-store and I retained my UDP no problem.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You could save it for when the iPhone 6 comes out or Note 4 or some future phone. You could also get it and sell it on Craig's list or eBay for a profit as long as you don't mind being tied into your plan for another 2 years. Please post your results success or failure or negative so we can all learn if there are any new pitfalls.

Worked good, took me a while just to get someone available on chat. she started with no, but i told her the Verizon store told me this the other day that i could keep unlimited, which they did and it worked. had to give her imei #

I'm trying to upgrade a Bionic so I would think that rules out the 3g thing.

That's good to hear. Was there any excuse or reason they said no at first? Was it because you were going from 3G to 4G? Which isn't really a valid excuse.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

So I was able to get a price match from best buy, but in order to take advantage of the price I have to have the best buy representative place the order. If I do this, will I still be able to switch my sim cards? I ask because the rep is telling me that I have to choose a different option and that I will lose my UDP. Any thoughts on this?

Don't do it. You will lose it if you let a rep do it for you.

So it sounds as though I am fortunate in having a Dumb
I think a pre-assigned SIM is more a problem using the Best Buy method. I think what causes one to lose UDP is if you exercise the upgrade on an UDP line and then activate the phone on that line.

How to lose UDP:
UDP Line1 (Upgrade) => Order phone with upgrade select non UDP plan => SIM associated with Data Plan => activate phone with SIM on Line 1

Methods to keep UDP interrupt this sequence in one way or another. In the Best Buy method they are bypassing the last step by putting another SIM into the phone on Line 1. If you put the SIM in that came with the phone it automatically activates completing the last step.

With the "transfer upgrade to an dumb phone method" you interrupt the first step. I'm not sure currently in this upgrade is the SIM pre-associated with the dump phone line or is it a virgin SIM. But even if the SIM is pre-programmed for the Dumb phone line all that would happen is that it associates with the dumb phone line when you plug it in, it won't change the UDP line. So when you go to activate it on your UDP line it will ask you for the number of the SIM and the MEID of the phone. If it is a virgin SIM it will associate itself with your UDP line and you're good to go. If is says the SIM is already associated with the dumb phone line you'll have to call Verizon to have them disassociate it from that line and they will.

So it sounds as though I am fortunate in having a Dumb phone line to "purchase " these phones on. Do you see any disadvantage in doeing this through VZW.com or best buy.com or costco walk in?
Thanks again.

But if the UDP is tied to the number, shouldnt activation from the card that comes preinstalled in the new phone work? I just don't understand how getting a replacement SIM and activating it is different than activating a virgin preinstalled card.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I didn't really read the terms of agreement (who does), so it may actually state that if you upgrade on an existing UDP you need to get a new plan (don't really know).

I do and no it doesn't say that anywhere as of about a month ago.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It would really be great to know the real story on Verizon SIM cards. Depending on how you get them, do they come to you pre-assigned to a line and/or MEID? They are being sold on eBay so those would not be able to be associated with a line or MEID. In this case, you would go through the on-line activation tool and enter the MEID and SIM number. If all is well, then it activates. You power off your old phone and power up the new one. Once powered up, it appears to go through a process (taking several minutes) to get access to the network. My thinking is that once you are connected with the new SIM that all previous phones and SIMs are deactivated. At this point, you power down the new phone and put the SIM into another phone and be immediately connected without any contact with Verizon. This tells me that the active SIM is tied to your line (and plan) and will tie to another other clean ESN when inserted and powered on. So...if you have an active NFC Nano SIM then you can use it in any Verizon phone that accepts SIM cards with the use of the appropriate size adapter (if needed).

Does anyone have any insight on how it is configured when it arrives from Verizon (or is picked up in the store)?

Because the pre-installed SIM is tied to the subsidized price of the phone...Verizon no longer allowed us to upgrade and retain unlimited data, you would need to pay full price for the phone or transfer your upgrade to a dumb or tired data phone...the BB bypass all that...it's been said before do not use the pre-installed SIM, do it at your own risk

The Bionic is a 4g phone, it uses a mini SIM card so you would need to cut it down to micro or nano size depending on the phone you buy now...some people have had luck with ordering a new SIM from Verizon and use that instead of cutting their SIM

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys, I have a quick question. My wife wants to upgrade her iPhone 4s to the 5c but we don't want to lose unlimited data. I'm the primary line, and I am eligible for an upgrade (she isn't until July). Can I purchase the upgrade for my line (primary line) from Best Buy online then put her (cut) sim card into the new 5c?

It doesn't matter where you get the phone as long as you activate the new phone on the dumb line before using on your line....I transferred my upgrade to a basic line to get the LG g2 on VZW.com, chose store pick up, the rep would not let me leave without activating the phone, so I had him activate it on the dumb line, reactivate the flip phone then transfer my SIM to the G2 (the phone I had before was the Razr Maxx HD)

Flyingarrow describe success doing that. But that is just one example so mileage may vary:
Two smart phones with UDP
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 UDP

Order phone Line1, select data plan
Receive phone activate on Line2 (Before turning on, take out SIM that comes with phone and discard as may be pre-activated on Line1)
Line1 data plan will not get implemented, pending activation/data plan will drop off in a week

Ok cool, so it seems like there's a 60/40 chance it'll work. I may just pull the trigger.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Just called to cancel my order after receiving one of those problem emails about "preactivation failure". I got transferred to a 2nd BB rep who then contacted Verizon and after coming back on the phone he said the problem was with my UDP. He said the only way to keep my plan was to pay full price for my new S5. I specifically asked the 1st BB rep if my employer discount had anything to do with the problem and she said probably not. They both seemed to think its a difference in the code that BB uses vs what Verizon is using. I guess I'm gonna try what others have done and continue to place new orders and hope that BB can activate this thing without involving Verizon. I'll update again. Just to recap I am on a family share plan and trying to do the 2 year upgrade on my line. Also I currently have Droid Bionic 4G Smartphone, so I'm guessing that is not the problem either. I'm considering doing the upgrade on my mom's line and transferring.

So it seems this problem has to deal with the additional lines in the family plan.... I was able to order my phone with my main line just fine and receive a shipping confirmation. But for my wife's phone after a 2nd try I got the same email that there's a problem with the order. I think I am going to try to put the new 4g sim card for wife's phone into my old Rezound and activate it and then try ordering the phone again. I am running out of options at this point.. Maybe I could ask if I convert my wife's line into an individual account and retain the unlimited data?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Since we're talking about SIM cards. I was wondering, my old sim didn't have the 4LTE on the actual SIM but the new one that came with my S5 did.. should I go in and get a new sim for my phone? The 4LTE works fine on the S5 but I'm wondering if I should get a new one anyways? If I take it in, should I bring the S5 or the old phone with the old sim?
