[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Yes, and I've read that thread, however there's a catch, in that you'll never get to use your own upgrade to get a phone. In my case, I have 3 other lines on my account, all of which have the 2GB of data each + my UDP line. If I used an available upgrade on one of those lines and then switched out the SIMs, that line could not upgrade for another 2 years. Wife and kids are not willing to give up their upgrade for my sake LOL. So at least this BB method allows you to have your cake and eat it too so to speak...

No. The alternate upgrade is where you would transfer your upgrade to another line and order the phone on that line but the contract extension would come to your line. Not the other line.

Edit: I stand corrected in rereading that thread. But I'm referring to I guess a different version of the alternate upgrade or maybe it goes by a different name.

OK got it, I understood that wrong then! So that it's clear then, I can transfer my upgrade (alternate) to another one of the lines that is a) currently under contract and b) currently has data, activate the new phone on that line, then switch SIM cards (putting that user's SIM back in their old phone) and now the new phone has UDP still? What happens to the date of the contract of the line I transferred the upgrade to? Stays the same I suspect?

The line you send the phone from gets the contract. You can transfer the upgrade to a dumbphone line (adding data) the drop the data off when the dumbphone is put back on the line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I know you can transfer an upgrade from one line to another and order a phone online - at the same time - via Verizon or Best Buy. However, can you transfer the upgrade and order the phone later? This does not appear to be allowed on the Verizon website. Can a VZW customer service rep do it? If they did, would you lose the unlimited data (there seems to be conflicting information about this)?
I would never call if you are trying a loop hole to keep unlimited data. That is your biggest risk of losing it. Verizon's website only had the option to transfer the upgrade when ordering the phone. Why do you need to transfer it in advance.

Thanks, in this case all lines other than the UDP have data already so no need to drop data, but that's useful if you line 2 is just a plain phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

But why transfer the upgrade just to wait to order?

Fair question. Because I want to order a phone through MotoMaker for the Motorola Moto-X and that site does not recognize the upgrade transfer (apparently because the transaction is not complete in Verizon's system). It thinks the original line still has the upgrade, so I can't get the contract price.
using the second line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey all,

I have attempted this method successfully with a new LG G3, just waiting on the pending activation to drop from the upgrade line. I have unlimited data and everything is working great so far. It's only been 3 days so far, so I'm patiently waiting for that activation to drop.

I just registered this account to ask one question, what should I do if the activation does not drop after a week? I see three options:

A. Call verizon and ask them to remove the pending activation. I'm not sure how to conduct this conversation or what to say, any advice?
B. Deactivate the LG G3 and reactivate the old phone on the UDP line. Then temporarily activate the G3 on the tiered line to remove the pending activation. Eventually I would deactivate the phone again and bring it back to the UDP line.
C. Place the new sim card that came with the G3 into the phone currently being used on the tiered line. Has anyone done this before?

Thanks and a special thanks to dss2000, you've been answering questions from people for a large portion of this thread (even if the answer is only a few pages back...) and have been very helpful

It's always fallen off with me (3 times) and it never showed any data charges so I just forgot about it and checked in a week or so and it was gone. One poster had done it with Best Buy and they reported that it didn't fall off by it self at about 4 days and started charging data (something weird with those BB phones). He did option B and it fell off.

This is when you directly activate new phone with old sim bypassing activating on non UDP line correct? If I was to activate on non UDP line then switch it should fall off immediately correct?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So going this route, I wouldn't need to do anything with the sim cards? It seems like there are conflicting ways to go about this if I'm reading it right. Some say I would need to switch Sim cards and then activate it.

Is there any advantage to getting g3 from bestbuy picking up at store vs ordering from Verizon vs going to Verizon store? Would I run into any problems at either place?

Last thing is if I do this, the dumb line upgrade is used up and im locked for 2 years, but the UDP lines upgrade is still available?

Some of the confusion stems from there being two main methods, this tread describes the Verizon transfer upgrade to tiered data or basic phone line to order the upgrade then putting the new phone on the UDP line. The Best Buy method is on this tread and more dependent on swapping SIMS

http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...mited-data-get-phone-subsidized-price-62.html

Methods for the Verizon transfer upgrade method are:

One Smart phone with UDP
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 dumb phone

  1. Transfer upgrade from Line1 to Line2
  2. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  3. Activate smartphone on Line1
  4. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

UDP phone and dumb phone with upgrade
Line1 UDP
Line2 dumb phone (Upgrade available)

  1. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  2. Activate smartphone on Line1
  3. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

UDP phone with upgrade and Tiered data phone
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 Tiered Data

  1. Transfer upgrade from Line1 to Line2
  2. Order smartphone using transferred upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  3. Activate smartphone on Line1
  4. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

UDP phone and Tiered data phone with upgrade
Line1 UDP
Line2 Tiered Data (Upgrade available)

  1. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  2. Activate smartphone on Line1
  3. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

You can do similar strategies with Best Buy phones but one poster said the pending plan didn't drop off the basic phone line (5 days) so if you do this with a Best Buy phone it might be better to do the method described by the OP to first activate the phone on the basic phone line, put the basic phone back on it then activate the new phone on the UDP line. Or who knows maybe if they waited longer it would have fallen off from BB too but it started charging him Data which is different than Verizon so not sure.

No as soon as you log off the website the transferred upgrade goes back to the original phone.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Can someone confirm that my understanding is correct...

Line 1 - UDP (Upgrade Avail)
Line 2 - UDP (11/27/14)
Line 3 - Dumb phone (Upgrade Avail)

Scenario 1
I can upgrade Line 3 (Dumb phone) to a smart phone by ordering online at either Verizon or Best Buy. As soon as I get the phone delivered, I can put the SIM card from Line 2 (not yet eligible) into the new phone and discard the SIM that ships with the new phone. This will result in the contract for Line 3 (Dumb Phone) to be extended for 2 years, but not affect my UDP for Line 2. In addition, the data plan that I will have had to add when I ordered my new smart phone will fall off after a few days and the dumb phone that is attached to Line 3 will not experience a service interruption.

Scenario 2
I can go to a store (e.g. Best Buy - I want to use the $50 GC promo) and purchase a new smartphone using the upgrade on Line 3 (Dumb phone). Best Buy will activate the new smartphone on Line 3 along with a data plan at the store, extending the contract on Line 3 for 2 more years. I can then wait a day or so and put the SIM that is currently in the smartphone on Line 2 into the newly purchased phone, thus having the new phone to Line 2. I can then reactivate the original dumb phone again on Line 3 and drop the 2gb data plan that Best Buy will have added when I purchased the new phone. This will result in no loss to my UDP to Line 2.

Thanks in advance for the help!

You should be able to do either, I personally would do scenario 2. I would activate the phone, make a call and then put the dumbphone back on the line. I would not wait the day.

Yes if you activate on the tiered data/dumb phone line first, then put the original phone dumb phone back on the line the pending activation falls off then you put the new phone on your UDP line. Extra steps but the pending order falls off immediately. Haven't tried directly swapping phones since I always have the dumb phone on that line. Other drawback is that if you don't have the phone with you, in my case my in-laws have it it will disrupt their service until the phone is reactivated. By skipping that step the line never gets disrupted.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have upgraded my wifes line using the BB method, but as I want the G3, I have had to look into doing the extra line method. I thought I knew what and how to do it, but I have read so many things on the various forums that I am completely confused and somewhat dizzy. I think I know the outline of what to do, but I get very lost in the details of it. Somewhere I remember seeing the details of some of what follows, but I cannot find it anymore.

We have 2 UDP lines but no other line on one of those old 700 minute family plans. My line is ready for upgrade, my wifes I just did tne BB method a few weeks ago.

I have read that I can go online and add a 3rd line @ VZW website and directly get the G3. But here is where I start running into trouble.
1st: When I try that, it starts asking me questions about text msgs and wants me to choose a text msg plan for the 2 existing lines. The problem is that that text msg plan that I have apparently no longer exisits. I dont want a different plan, and I am afraid that choosing a different plan will screw it up as some sort of change to my contract. Is it safe to have the online rep people assist you with adding the new line so that there are no changes to the first two lines?

2. Assuming I get past that hurdle, and get a G3 in my hands, what is the procedure to follow? Should I activate G3 on the newly added line first? Then, put on an old flip phone I have from like 2006 around? Can/should this dumb phone activation be done without a call to verizon? Is this going to be a problem that the dumbphone was not on this line as far as activation? Almost all of the discussion I have come across assumes the existence of a line with a dumbphone on it to start, not one that is added and that is initially added as a smartphone.

3. Assuming I can get the dumbphone activated and the G3 Deactivated, how do I activate the G3 on my UDP line? My current smartphone has the same size SIM. DO i just remove from the old and put the same SIM in the G3, or is there something else to do? Should I get a new SIM in advance? Am I going to have to call to activate the G3 on the UDP line? Thanks in advance for any repies

Yes if Verizon allows you to add another phone to the account without disturbing your two other UDP lines would be the safest most reliable method. Some posters have reported that Verizon would not let them do this though. Though I'm not sure if this is actual Verizon policy or some Verizon CSR making it up to get someone to lose their UDP so they can pocket a commission. Yes there are many stories like this. Assuming you're able to start a new line on the account without disturbing the UDP lines you would go online to the website and activate the dumb phone on that new line which would bump the new G3 off the line and the data portion would fall off leaving you with a dumb phone on a $10/mo plan. Then you would take the SIM from your UDP plan phone and put it in the G3 and you'll have UDP on your G3

The other possibility is this FlyingArrow method. This one is a little on the cutting edge and I'm not sure if anyone else has tried and confirmed they too have had success but if it works it would save you from the $10/mo extra line charge. BTW could you not do the Best Buy method again?

Two smart phones with UDP
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 UDP

  1. Order phone Line1, select data plan
  2. Receive phone activate on Line2
  3. Line1 data plan will not get implemented, pending activation/data plan will drop off in a week

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

First off, thank you for your help.
I fall into this upgrade:
UDP phone and dumb phone with upgrade
Line1 UDP(Upgrade available)
Line2 dumb phone (Upgrade available)
Line 3 dumb phone(Upgrade available)

1.Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
2.Activate smartphone on Line1
3.Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

I stopped at Verizon store to check out G3 and talked to a rep who pretty much said the same thing but told me I'd be better off ordering it online , She said she did this method for a friend. and also a lot of people are doing it.
Just so I get this straight and a few more final questions:

She said order it using Line 2(dumb line)upgrade and activate it on line 2. - Just follow the instructions it comes with using the new sim it comes with?

Then put old dumb phone (activate) back on Line 2. This is where the new data plan on Line 2 should drop off by itself in a few days?

She then said bring in the new phone into store and they will be able to put it on my UDP line. She said I wouldn't need to switch SIMS or anything, that they will be able to activate it. Any advantage or disadvantage to them doing it?
Line 2 would then be under 2 year contract with no upgrade for 2yrs, and Line 1(udp) and line 3 (dumb) would still have upgrades available.. but wouldn't be able to ever use/transfer Line 1's upgrade because if I did, I would lose UDP?
And finally.. since line 3 has available upgrade, say in a few months or later, do the same to get whatever the latest and greatest phone will be then and just sell the g3? not being greedy, just wondering.

I would love to do the best buy method again, but they will not ship the g3. I am also a bit fearful of all the exposure that method has recieved over the last month. It had even been listed on slickdeals!

Thanks for your clarification on this. Unless the best buy website list the g3 for shipping before the end of the sale, I am going to go online and with the assistance of an online CSR, keep my current lines the same, and add the g3 on a new line. I might have them check out phone I intend to use as a dummy to make sure it is clear to activate on its own so I don't run into any problems later.
