[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello,

I don't mean to high-jack this thread or anything but i am also in a similar situation as everyone else.

I have a UDP with a Galaxy Nexus on it. I also have a basic phone on another line. I used the upgrade on the basic phone to order a HTC M8. I received it today and i'm not exactly sure where i should go next.

The M8 has a micro SIM (i think, its small) and my Nexus has a full size SIM. Is the SIM in the M8 tied to the non-UDP line? If it is, that is fine, i can cut the full size down ( i think).

Also i am not sure whether to activate it directly on my UDP line and wait for the charges to disappear on the NON-UDP line OR to activate first on the NON-UDP line then activate the basic phone back on that line in order to manually cancel the data plan i had to add to get the phone. Either way, with the August 24th "ultimatum" hanging over me, i do not want to screw this up.

Basically if anyone could give me the steps to take to ensure i do not get stuck with the extra data plan AND keep my UDP, that would be wonderful!

Please and Thank You :)

If you got it from Verizon you can just activate it on your UDP phone line. Use the SIM that came with the phone. Turn off your Galaxy Nexus, login to your account on the Verizon Wireless Website. Cell Phones, Smartphones & the Largest 4G LTE Network - Verizon Wireless. On the left column select "activate or switch device", select the line with your UDP. Check "Activate Device", check "I am activating a device that I have not used with this account". It will ask for the Device ID and the number on the SIM and then it will activate. The pending order on the basic phone line will eventually fall off usually within 1 week and never be implemented.

I did this exactly. It seems to be working without any problems. Still says i have UDP.
Thank you!

The only thing i am worried about is the pending data plan. I can't seem to find it anywhere(if i am suppose to), so how will i know it is actually gone and i don't have to keep worrying about it? My billing cycle starts in two days if that affects anything.

Thanks for everyone's input!

block data on the line and you should be fine.

Re: Methods that will allow you to both get a subsidized phone and keep UDP after 8/24/14

thanx for the quick reply one last question i have a 4s that is 3g but now i want to upgrade my g3 that i got from dummy phone to my 4s phone but now when i'm in the vzw website they say

SIM Card Required

You are requesting to change from a 3G device to a 4G device. 4G devices require a SIM Card, a
portable memory chip that holds account (plan) information, address book, text messages,
music, photos and more.

do i used the same SIM card that comes with G3 that i activate with the dummy phone ? or do i have to purchase a new one 4g lte sim card ?

you never have to purchase sim cards if you are verizon customer.

Remind me what you did to get the phone (i.e., did you transfer a udp upgrade or do the best buy method)?

Re: Methods that will allow you to both get a subsidized phone and keep UDP after 8/24/14

i got the phone thru an upgrade on my 3 rd line that is on a basic plan no data nothing. then i upgrade that basic phone to g3 and when thru all the steps and everything went well until i want to put the g3 into my 2nd line which has iphone 4s that is not 4glte but with the UDP. Now i'm in the process in switch that g3 into my 4s line with has the UDP and now Verizon asked me to type the sim card number on the g3 should i used that number or do i need to purchase a new 4glte sim card to the g3 ?

Ok, so you used the basic line's upgrade to purchase a G3.

OK, so you activated the G3 on the basic line first and then put the basic phone back on the basic line, correct? Did the data plan drop off? If not, block data on the line.

You can use the SIM card that came with the G3. Since you used the basic line's upgrade and did not transfer a UDP line's upgrade, you are not in danger of losing UDP no matter what SIM card you use.

The only thing to worry about is to make sure the data plan is off of the basic line before the 25th of August.

You never need to purchase a sim card if you are a current verizon customer - they will mail them to you for free. But you are fine to use the sim that came with the G3 because you used the basic line's upgrade to purchase the phone. There is no issue with losing UDP when you do that.

If you don't see it labeled next to picture of the phone on the account you ordered the phone it's already gone. It doesn't always take a week to fall off, many have reported that it fell off immediately. If it still shows the old basic phone plan $10/mo then your good, it's gone.

make sure the data plan drops off of the basic line or block the data if it doesn't.

they drop off the data and for the safe side i also block data too and now i am a happy camper ;-) thanx for your help guiding me through the process

iphone 5s and G3 are not available on best buy for delivery, what would be the next best for resale value?

on best buy, 16GB s5 is $149 and 32GB htc M8 is $99. The s5 sells for a bit more on swappa, but it would cost you $50 more + tax to buy it from best buy. It looks like the s5's might move faster if that is important to you.

Check ebay, too.

Best Buy changes their sales on sunday btw.

Re: Methods that will allow you to both get a subsidized phone and keep UDP after 8/24/14

on best buy i only see the 5s for 199.00 and it says "Not Available for Shipping"

I was posting about the s5 = samsung galaxy s5, sorry about the confusion.

Re: Verizon How to Both Get a Subsidized Phone and Keep Unlimited Data after 8/24/14

Anyone ever did store pick up from best buy (via upgrade transfer to basic line?)?

That would be fine. You can even do the upgrade transfer when buying in store - I have done this and not lost UDP. You just need a CSR who knows how to do the transfer.

They activate the phone on the basic line and you don't lose UDP but a data plan is added to the basic line. When I got home, I put the basic phone back on the line and dropped the data plan.

Lol oh I know it would work. I was just wondering who has done it thanks though!

well, I have done it in-store. What would be different if you did it online for pick up in-store?

Is this what you mean? I just did the transfer to the basic line on Best Buy's website and picked up and activated in the store. Kept Unlimited Data and extended the contract on my UDP line and went back to a basic phone after initially activating the smartphone on that line.
