[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

The bill I just got says otherwise.

Guess I better use up all my upgrades then today and tomorrow and hope it puts my phones under contract.

You should read the official terms on verizons website. Being in contract has no affect. A phone call to verizon will confirm this is true.

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

Are you referring to the fact that being under contract is no longer one of the conditions VZW will use to decide to throttle you or not? :)

Today is August 23. I assume today is the very last day people can use the loophole to use a basic line to get smartphones with no need to commit to 24 months of data plan, even with a basic phone line? :)

I wonder how many people, outside of us geeky guys/gals on AndroidCentral or related forums) know about this new change. I sure hope Verizon makes this new policy to customers very clearly when they upgrade new phones after tomorrow.... or else there will be a lot of people getting stuck with 24 months of data for each basic line they upgrade. :)
Tomorrow is the last day. It's after the 24th.

Ordered one g3 from best buy, chose in store pickup. Picking up Thursday. Vzw says won't be an issue. Have two weeks from purchase.

This is a directly quote from the firs sentence in that Verizon memo on PDF:

"Beginning 8/24/14, the following changes are being implemented...."

not sure how to post the PDF here... but I got it from a link somewhere in the earlier posts of this thread.

That's what I figured... do you know where I can find the relevant terms about 4G throttling on Verizon's website?

Edit: I found this page... wondering why the word "contract" isn't mentioned anywhere on the page: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...formation/data_disclosure.html&token=PcPCoN94

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

Do we actually know that this is in fact truth or are we still going on rumors (ie verizon didn't say)

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

The fact that they are going to attempt to close the loophole.

What specifically?

I can't be more confused by all the changes that Verizon is implementing.

Asked this a while back and I still don't know what the answer is:

I have two lines.

Line 1 is a smartphone with unlimited data and has an available upgrade.

Line 2 is basic phone still under contract

Let's say I transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2, the new 2-year contract will go on Line 1, right? If this is this case, the new 24-month data plan requirement will be on Line one. Am I still correct? Since I have no intention of removing data from Line 1, will the $29.99 unlimited data plan satisfy the 24-month data plan requirement. The reason I'm confused is the leaked Verizon memo said the 24-month data plan requirement is $30.

Thanks! :)

That old press release about being under contract and being excluded from network optimization is no longer valid. You have until the end of tomorrow to transfer your upgrade from your line with unlimited data to your feature phone and do an alternate upgrade. Beginning August 25th Verizon will require any upgrades to smartphones to keep the data package of 30 or more per month

Basically you probably should transfer the upgrade and get something whatever the cheapest phone as you can by that has the highest resale value. And then sell it right away and keep that money until the phone you want comes out or after October 1st when the throttling begins if it gets bad you'll have that money there to pay the ETF if you choose to leave Verizon.

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

This was inevitable...like the upgrade at Best Buy and keep unlimited data.

I can only share my personal observation. I have a primary account and a sub account, which is under the primary account. I receive a separate bill for each.

On my primary account, I had an unlimited line that was out of contract with an upgrade available.
At the bottom of that bill, I got the note verbatim as was referenced earlier, stating that one of my lines was out of contract and may be subject to Network Optimization starting October 1st.

On my second, sub account, I have 3 unlimited lines that are all under contract. On that bill, I had all the standard notes and disclaimers that were on the first bill, EXCEPT the one that refers to Data Usage and Network Optimization.

Of course, no one will no for sure and jfriend33 may be correct that all Unlimited Data users may be subject to Network Optimization, but I have to wonder if the difference between my two invoices was important.

Please do me a favor: If one of your lines is out of contract, check the bottom of your bill and report your findings. Likewise, if you are locked into a contract, report your findings. I am curious.

Of course, I burned my last upgrade recently, as an attempt to avoid optimization on October 1st. My billing cycle ends on the 2nd of the month, so I should be receiving new bills next week and will report my findings. For those interested, the disclaimers appear on the last page of your bill. It can be accessed by logging into your Verizon Wireless account online by selecting VIEW BILL and then VIEW AND SAVE PRINTABLE BILL.

Please call Verizon corporate and ask them your question and see what they say. I hope you're right.... if so I'm gonna need to do a few more alternate upgrades tomorrow to get our two unlimited lines under contract.

It sucks. But it's not the end of the world.
Kinda makes me wonder if some folks new far ahead of time due to the amounts of new phones for sale on eBay and swappa.com for Super cheap prices.

I will obviously just add data to one of our 3 feature phones. Someone can use it to tether to an iPad or something. That way we have upgrade options for cheap.

Otherwise we'll just use a new credit card and get something new or gently used and finance it for 0% interest for 18 months or something.

What the worst part of this is, the optimization. If it livable I'll be content with no more upgrades.

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

Beginning August 25th Verizon will require any upgrades to smartphones to keep the data package of 30 or more per month.

The memo says "Beginning 8/24/14" so I assume the loophole will be closed
in just under 4 hours? It is currently 8:07PM EST.

Also, the "$30 data plan" requirement was used deliberately. It effectively
kills off the ability of $29.99 data plan customers to transfer upgrades to
other lines.

Or am I misinterpreting that memo?

I don't know. I've seen so many freakin dates. One even speculated the 13th of September to allow any necessary phone swapping exchanges after online order arrives.

I did mine today just to be safe. The picture on this thread page one says the 25th or after the 24th.

It reminds me of when a term paper is due.

Folks either way shouldn't wait until the last minute just to be safe.

I have my account remarked because my phone won't be picked up until Thursday. But since I ordered today I'm fine.

The only reason why I ordered from best buy is because they had a gift card promo sign up that ended Feb, and let me get a $50 gc on each line I upgraded. Plus I already had one gc from a tablet trade in. $58 total, but will still get another gc, plus $35 upgrade fee. 43 bucks not a bad price for a $500 phone.
