[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What I'M feeling?
I'M going in... asking to transfer the upgrade to a line with no unlimited plan. then they always say... you cant do that. you will lose unlimited. So I go on and say I dont want to lose it. Cant you just transfer the upgrade? and again, he says IM losing it. So, I leave.

seems like both are suggesting that I am signing a new contract on the line with the upgrade, not the dummy phone even if i transfer the upgrade to a line with no unlimited....... I am also getting that from a chat rep from verizonwireless.com

They don't know what they are talking about. Yes the phone you transferred the upgrade from will be reset for 2 more years, but you don't lose your unlimited. Don't even bring any of that up in the store.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just did exactly what you said tx_tuff. I went to another store. Asked to upgrade the phone with no unlimited data. Did that, activated the phone, then deactivated by going back to the old phone. Then activated the new S4 onto my line. So far, everything looks good regarding keeping unlimited data on both 2 lines.

Kinda off topic, but how many hours do I charge the phone for? And do I leave it off while charging?

Thanks a bunch! NEW S4 OWNER!! :) !!!

Charging time is going to vary by what the phone is doing while charging and what you have it connected to (wall or a PC via USB, etc). You don't have to turn it off when charging, having the screen off is not even 100% necessary, but it helps it charge faster. The screen is typically most people's number one battery drain. For me charging overnight is sufficient but I think it only takes 45-60 minutes to fully charge if I leave it alone during that time.

I'm glad it worked out for you, the key with any transaction is to act like you know what you are doing and don't ask questions LOL. As far as charging I don't have it myself yet but my guess would be until it has a full charge :)

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So, I've been on unlimited data since the Thunderbolt came out, then I bought the Galaxy Nexus off contract when that came out. I'm starting to get to the point where I'm looking at potential new phones, but I'm wondering, if I buy a new phone at a subsidized price and renew my contract, will I get kicked off of unlimited data and forced into a tiered plan?

Yes you will.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

D'oh. Don't really want to lose unlimited, but not crazy about paying another $600+ for a new phone. Honestly, not sure I want to be locked in to Verizon for another two years, anyway, but I don't know if any other carrier would be a better choice. Blah. Oh well.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I want to upgrade and keep my unlimited plans. I have an older plan. I have Nationwide Talk & Text Share 1400. We have two smart phones that we pay 29.99 each for for the unlimited data. One is an Iphone 4, the other an HTC Thunderbolt. I know that I can by full price phones and keep the unlimited. We want to get a S4 and an Iphone 5. Is there a way through this plan to add two lines (dummy lines), upgrade and then transfer. Or is that not possible since this is an older plan? I figure if I can do that it will cost me 20 bucks a month for both lines which is cheaper than the difference between the full phone lines and the subsiduzed ones. (20*24=480) (650-200=450, 450*2=900, 900/24=37.50). So I'd be saving 17.50 a month or 420 dollars over the two year period.

Is it possible with the type of plan I have?

You should be able to, I did the same exact thing back in October when BestBuy had the S3 for $99. I have the same plan.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What are you feeling these stores? All you should do is walk in and tell them you want to transfer the upgrade from Line A to Line B, get the phone and walk out. There should be no mention of unlimited out limited anything while in there.

Then how do you know you're keeping unlimited data? If you return the phone within the first few days of having it does everything go back to the way it was? So if I go into a store transfer the upgrade, get a new S4, activate it on the limited data line then transfer it to the unlimited data line and it turns out that it impacted the unlimited data can I return the phone the next day like nothing ever happened? I've been told on the phone twice now that I will lose unlimited data by transferring the upgrade, it could be that these call center people don't know what they are talking about though but it's tough to take the leap of faith.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just signed up to report on an alternate method that was mentioned briefly in this thread that worked for me extremely easily. It doesn?t use Verizon?s own policies against them so YMMV.

As it?s been mentioned a few times, if you upgrade through Best Buy?s site, it gives you the option to keep your existing data plan and doesn?t force you to pick a new one. So all I had to do was go through the process of upgrading through their site. I printed every page along the way just in case, they all said ?Keep my existing data plan.? I did a same-day store pickup, the BB employee never got a prompt to change my data plan either.

But as expected, it automatically switched me to a 2Gb plan. All it took from there was one quick call to customer service to get it switched back. When I got to a rep after all the menus, I just politely told him that I had just upgraded my phone through Best Buy and had checked ?Keep my existing data plan? through the whole process but my plan got switched automatically and could they please change it back. He asked what my plan was before, I told him unlimited data and all the other details. He went through the usual stuff asking if I wanted phone insurance, etc. then after a couple minutes said I was switched back to unlimited. The call took about 10 minutes total, he didn?t question anything or give me any issues, just changed it back and that was that. That was all done yesterday and my account still shows unlimited as of today. I?ll report back if anything changes.

This was on a single line, 450min, 500txt, unlimited plan. Again, YMMV so if you get a rep that doesn?t want to change it, end the call and call back to get a different one.

I definitely saw that option on best buy when I got my s4 two days ago. I was upgrading a basic line that had no data at all and it said keep existing data plan. It didn't even give me a choice to choose a data plan other than keep existing. Nice find, but huge YMMV.

Well if you read all the fine print all the way through the process and keep copies of that I don't see how YMMV. A small claims court would rule in your favor if VZ charges you anything over what your existing contract suggests they should I would think.

Were you able to call in and get switched back to unlimited?

Edit: Never mind...thought you said you upgraded on an unlimited line.

If you lose unlimited data by doing this then you will be the very first person to do so.

But to answer you question, yes you can return it and go back.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Has anybody who did this loophole done the rebate? I purchased my phone with a $50 mail in rebate. It asks you to put down the eligible phone number. Do I put the dummy phone's number or the number where I switched the new phone to?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok my next months bill has a $10 charge for the data plan that was tacked on to the upgrade line ..... Will I get reimbursed for it next following pay period since I technically only had it on for a couple minutes?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello, I am buying a Samsung Galaxy S4 today. I would like to keep my unlimited data & I only have one question.
I am buying it on my Step-Moms Verizon account. I am on my dads account. If I buy the phone using her upgrade, can I just activate it for my phone right there?
Since they are two separate Verizon accounts? or will I have to go through all these steps?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has any input on the importance of the new sim card when you are transferring your new phone to the unlimited line...I two unlimited lines and one dumb phone line and am doing the transfer upgrade on both unlimited lines. First one went perfectly, got the new sim card to activate on the first unlimited line. Second one, they forgot to include the sim card! Instead of dealing with the store, I just called customer care to have them activate the 2nd new phone on the dumb phone line using the sim card that was included with the first upgraded phone (it was only used for 24hrs to activate the new phone on the dumb phone line, then I used the fresh sim to activate it on unlimited). Anyways, everything looks ok online, but now I'm wondering how this could affect the way the devices were registered/activated.

The agent said it was a simple matter of assigning the correct device ID to the SIM, and that it wouldn't change anything with this device (or those already activated). But, now I'm nervous.

I sent it in with the dumb phone's number....twice, one for each phone.
