[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I now forget which is Rule #1? "You do not talk about Fight Club" OR "NEVER take your phone into a Verizon store"?

I have (or had) 3 UDP, 1 TDP
I upgraded TDP line with IPhone 6 - then transferred to UDP. - No Problems
I transferred upgrade from UDP line to TDP Ordered SECOND iPhone 6
Received 2nd iPhone, removed SIM, inserted SIM from first iPhone 6. (Now 2nd iPhone has first line # and is working!)
I want to know is that can I take FIRST iPhone 6 into Verizon Store and have it activated or "SWITCHED" to other UDP line WITHOUT losing UDP?
I am in need of a SIM and I want to get this activated BEFORE the holiday weekend. I won't get SIM by going online, trying to activate, and then having them mail one to me.
Too risky? We are talking UDP....
Anyone got a phone that uses nano SIM in the Anaheim area I can borrow for a night?

I'm kinda confused but will try to get this right. So right now you have a working iPhone 6 on the UDP and have another iPhone 6 you need to activate on the TDP?

If this is right then all you need to do is activate the iPhone on the TDP with the SIM you never used. It was shipped for that line so it has nothing to do with your UDP line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You didn't crew up, just don't turn on the phone with the new SIM. Take it out and put in the new SIM and you should be good to go.

Thanks! :) So I'm guessing it's just that post #1 needs to be updated? :)

(1)Figure out which lines are available for upgrade within your plan. DO NOT use an upgrade that currently has unlimited unless you have no other choice because you will lose unlimited data on that line. Example: You have a family share plan with 3 lines. 2 are smartphones both with unlimited data and 1 is a basic phone with no data. You would want to use the basic phone line for the upgrade. If you only currently have 2 lines and both are smartphones with unlimited data, using this method, you will have to lose unlimited on one of the lines in order to upgrade but you can switch the newly purchased phone over to the unlimited line..

This was two different threads put together as one. One was the Best Buy method that you used and one was a Verizon transfer upgrade method. Don't know why they added them together because it makes it confusing for new people to the thread like you. But don't worry you did nothing wrong.

Thanks again. :) I guess I just worry too much. It's like me putting on shark repellent when I go swimming.

In my backyard pool. :D :D :D

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If this is right then all you need to do is activate the iPhone on the TDP with the SIM you never used. It was shipped for that line so it has nothing to do with your UDP line.

I'm actually trying to transfer the line to Line 3, another UDP. By doing everything below, Verizon has my TDP line with a "Pending Order" and reads: Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this line of service but have not yet activated the device Why is everyone discarding SIM cards that shipped with phone?

I will try to explain:

4 existing lines on family plan. All were available for upgrade - ALL iPhone 4s
Line 1 - 2GB TDP
Line 2 - UDP
Line 3 - UDP
Line 4 - UDP

I upgraded to a iPhone 6 on my TDP. (Line 1)

After which, I activated the first iPhone 6 on Line 2 by logging onto Verizon and going through the activate or switch a device process selecting that you are activating a phone that has already been on your account. This will reprogram the SIM card in the phone for Line 2. Now you have a 4G LTE phone active on Line 2.

I then followed the "Scyzek Method":

1) Transfer Line 2's upgrade to Line 1 (2GB line); - COMPLETED
2) Upgrade online from Verizon on Line 1; - COMPLETED
3) Remove the SIM card the second iPhone 6 ships with when it arrives without turning it on or plugging it in; COMPLETED
4) Throw away the SIM card the second iPhone 6 ships with; and - COMPLETED
5) Place the 4G LTE SIM card that is in the first iPhone 6 into the second iPhone 6 and turn it on. COMPLETED

Now Line 2 has the second iPhone 6 on it and the first iPhone 6 is freed up to use on Line 3. (COMPLETED) However, you need a new SIM card for Line 3. You can get one by calling Verizon and telling them you need a SIM card to put an iPhone 6 on Line 3 and they will mail one to you.

My actual question is to the very LAST part. I am hoping NOT having to wait for Verizon to mail me a SIM card. I am HOPING to use this phone over the Thanksgiving holiday. Does anyone know FOR SURE if I can take this "already activated" phone into a Verizon store and have them activate it on Line 1 (2GB TDP)
Per the "Scyzek Method", I don't want to stick the SIM card that shipped with the SECOND iPhone into the FIRST iPhone. (Technically and for conversations sake - it was discarded per instruction.)

I tried going to a Verizon Store (Corporate) and was told they cannot just sell a SIM card. They need a phone to activate it on.
I would like to BUY a SIM card for the phone TOMORROW so I may use it over the weekend - I know, kind of selfish.

It depends on the stores. My local Verizon corporate store is perfectly willing to hand me a couple of SIM cards without having to activate them. (although it helps that I'm on very friendly terms with the store manager who is a hottie who seems to flirt with me even when I'm in the store with my girlfriend... needless to say, it makes my girlfriend mad)

Anyway.... if one Verizon corporate store won't play ball, try another one. Don't go in with your phone... say something like this: "my phone is acting funny and after talking to tech support, they said it's probably the store and told me to come to the store and get a replacement... oh and the phone is at home on my desk.. they said not to activate it and call them when I get home with the new sim card" (that's almost EXACTLY what I said to the corporate store employee to get them to give me an un-activated sim card) Yes, I know I shouldn't have made up a white lie like that... Oh.. and it helps a lot if you go in there when the store is extremely busy, as the employees are much more likely to just give you the sim card to get rid of you. :D

By the way, what's a guy with 4 iPhones doing hanging around AndroidCentral anyway? :D

Well, although this is a Droid forum, so to speak, there is still a LOT of information when having to deal with the providers. This forum has proved to be useful to me on a few occasions. The UDP is not necessarily tied to only iPhones - but affect us all who still have it - for now.

Thanks for the tip - I have my route already planned for my way home tomorrow. I can hit up to FOUR of the Corporate stores. I was at one today and didn't even get passed the doorman. Reminded me of my high school days... I'm getting rusty. Hopefully tomorrow will be better for me. I will throw in being an orphan (it's the truth, but I'm over 50) and that I would like a new toy to play with since I'm going to be all alone over the holiday weekend - untruth. Anyone care to help a member out in the So. Bay or Orange County, please let me know! :-) - Thanks again... Have a good holiday....

Oh yeah - ROLL TIDE!!!

another alternative is to just buy the Verizon SIM card from Amazon or eBay. Find a seller with tons of good ratings and spend a few bucks.($5 to $7 each, last I checked)

it may end up costing you less because you don't have to drive around and waste gas.(although gas is ridiculously cheap these days)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm here to give an update since this thread was so hopeful to me.

I used the Best Buy method. It works fine. As others have said countless times, simply order through bestbuy.com, select "keep existing plan", replace the SIM card it comes with before activating, and replace it with your older, yet still active SIM card from your previous phone. After successfully activating my Note 4, it took a few minutes for My Verizon to accurately display my current device. Moments later, however, it showed that I had the Note 4, still unlimited data, and that my contract now expires in November 2016. Thanks guys.

Thanks for the update! Sorry about my previous advice, i was under the impression your sim card was already active. I tend to plow through most of these posts without attention to detail.

This might be too late, but in my experience if you call VS customer support saying that you need to activate a phone that needs a SIM card, they typically would rush mail it to you. Good hunting out there for those SIM cards.

the sim card was destroyed as soon as I got it(before I put the battery in the phone, of course)

will anything happen if I never put any sim car in it and just stick the new phone in the drawer for a few months without ever turning it on?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK guys, last question before I do the Best Buy method.

My current phone is a Moto X, My iphone 6 just arrived from Best Buy. So, I should be able to take the SIM card from the Moto X and put it into the iphone 6, correct?

The reason I ask, is I read somehwere that there are some SIM cards that are android specific and cannot be used in the iOS environment. Is this true? I read this in the XDA forum. This is what I read:

Also, the nano SIM card in the iPhone is different than the nano SIM used in Android devices. The SKU you're looking for is: DFILL4FF-NFC-A (the A stands for Android)

Link for the forum:

Nexus 6 Nano SIM Card - Pg. 9 | Nexus 6 | XDA Forums

Any insight on this? I don't want to open my new iPhone if the SIM card from the Moto X (android) will not work.

You will be OK. The SIM is not specific to the device operating system.
Think of it like a social Security card...it identifies you but plays no role in how big your future retirement check will be.

The SIM identifies the customer to the carrier and how to bill. Other than possible NFC function at Verizon no other functionality is determined by it. So thye physical size of the SIM is all you really have to worry about.

You are OK to to just stick the new device in a drawer.

I personally often use a device with no SIM as just a wi-fi web device.

Since you used a transfered upgrade from UDP to a TDP line you did not have to destroy the SIM. All you had to do was activate on the TDP with the SIM out came with. Once that is done then you can switch it around without ever changing SIMs. But now you know.

actually, I didn't. (please see what I wrote above, in post# 7780) I had one UDP line(with upgrade) and two basic phone lines(no upgrades) :( I ordered using only the UDP line without transferring anything. I did destroy the sim card as soon as the phone arrived.
