[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So apologies if this has been asked/answered before but I am trying to figure out the following 2 scenarios:

Scenario 1:
I have one line with UDP and upgrade available, and one line with TDP no upgrade. I am trying to get the Droid Turbo coming from S3 for the UDP line. Can I transfer the UDP upgrade to the TDP line, buy/activate the Turbo on the TDP, then swap my S3 sim into the Turbo (after I cut it down) to keep UDP?

Scenario 2:
If I didn't want to cut the S3 nano sim to fit the Turbo, could I do something like: obtain an off contract phone that is lying around that uses nano sim, go to VZW store and ask for a nano sim, activate off contract phone on my UDP line, then follow the steps mentioned above (ie - swap UDP upgrade to TDP line) and then swap the offcontract phone's SIM into the Turbo? I realize the S3 sim would then be worthless (I would just throw it away)

Also - could I do this online (the upgrade transferring part) or would I have to do it in store? If I do it online and purchase the subsidized Turbo, should I activate it on the TDP line using the SIM provided or throw out the SIM?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What I did.
Line 1 LG G2 UDP (mine) upgrade available
Line 2 iPhone 5 UDP (wife) no upgrade
Line 3 iPhone 4 TDP (son) no upgrade.

I posted a week ago how in the store I was told I couldn't transfer my upgrade from Line 1 to Line 3 without losing my UDP. I knew that was BS so just went home and did it online.

Ordered a iPhone 6 for my wife that is to go on Line 2. Had to wait for it to ship.

When I got the phone activated it on Line 3. So needed to get this phone on Line 2 and the iPhone 5 from Line 2 onto Line 3.

Instead of going online and adding the iPhone 4 back on Line 3 freeing up the phone and going that route it dawned on me I could just switch SIM cards. The iPhone 4 wasn't going to be used so why go through all the hassle.

All I did was take out both SIM cards between Line 2 and 3 and switch them. iPhone 6 now on Line 2 with UDP and iPhone 5 on Line 3.

When I got the phone activated it on Line 3.

So I am assuming you transferred the Line 1 upgrade to Line 3? Then you activated the iPhone 6 on Line 3 with the "new" SIM it came with (Or did you use the "old" SIM that was part of the iPhone 4 on Line 3)?

If you used the "new" SIM and used that to swap Line 3 and Line 2, wouldn't Line 2 be carrying Line 3's info?

Also - I can't simply swap SIMs between the S3 and Turbo since they are two different sizes. That's why I was looking at scenario 2 where I would just reactivate an old/offcontract phone with a new nano SIM to my UDP line (rendering S3 sim useless), then swap that nano sim to the Turbo

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Okay I am about to order my wife a new phone because her Maxx is acting crazy as of late and it is frustrating her. So I need a little help to make sure I do this right. Here is my current situation.
Main line: UDP with S3....upgrade available
Line 2: UDP with Maxx.....upgrade available
Line 3: TDP with Iphone 4.....upgrade available
Line 4: TDP with Iphone 5c.....no upgrade available.

So in order to keep my wife's unlimited data plan I transfer her upgrade to Line 4 and order either the Turbo or S5. Now the next part confuses me a little. Once I get the phone in what do I do in order to get this to work out right and not cause my wife to lose her UDP? Do I activate new phone on the line 4 with TDP then once done swap them out online? Or can I take sim out of my wife's phone and put in new phone and that work? Someone please give me the right route to take. Thanks.

Yes I transferred Line 1 upgrade to Line 3 bought the new phone and activated out on Line 3 with the SIM that came with the phone.

Then I simply switched the SIM cards with the two phones. This moves the phones not the line information. So when I put Line 2 SIM into the iPhone 6 it put the iPhone 6 on Line 2. When I put the Line 3 SIM into the iPhone 5 it moved that phone to Line 3. Line 2 keep its UDP.

The best way to do it without having a pending activation is to activate the new phone with the SIM that came with it onto Line 4. After that is done switch the phones online.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks tx tuff. Do you know if this works if I call a VZW sales rep? I am trying to do this upgrade online but its not 1) giving me the $100 off any Android discount and 2) it's not waiving the $30 activation fee which should be in affect for the DT through 12/31.

Or will this upgrade trick not work if I get VZW directly involved through their sales dept?

Thanks again

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Rule of thumb.... NEVER directly involve a Verizon rep!

As much as I would love to avoid speaking to Sales/VZW rep, it is not showing roughly $130 in credit I should be receiving online. That's why I'm trying to "confirm" if it would still be possible to upgrade this way through a rep or not

I tried in store first and they told me I would lose my UDP by transferring my upgrade which is BS. I have done it in store before. If I was you I would call, if they mention you will lose it then just say no thanks and get off the phone. There is no rule you lose your UDP just by transferring an upgrade.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So you think the "safest" method is online? I tried again online and it is showing the $100 discount so I'd be willing go to that route if necessary (ie-transfer UDP upgrade to TDP line, buy/activate on TDP, then transfer back to UDP) and when I acquired over the phone about the $30 upgrade fee, the rep told me she would add a note to the acct that if I chose to get Turbo, I would get the fee waived/credited.

I think biggest confusion (at least for me) is whether transferring upgrade would count as upgrading the UDP line (since upgrade came from that), or if it would count as upgrading the TDP (or whichever line the upgrade transfers to)

Thanks again for your help

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I had two lines on my contract one was unlimited and the second which was added later only had 4Gig of Data
That contract ended 11 months ago . I can't see a way around getting a upgrade is there. or am I totally confused .
I wanted the Note 4 but is says my package is out dated and I need to pick a new plan.

I just tried to upgrade my wifes phone , her didn't have the unlimited date. Looked good then at check out I get "The MORE Everything Plan
Enjoy Unlimited Talk & Text, Unlimited International Messaging and Shareable Data."

The two year contract will be added to your UDP line the transfer came from.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks shortwave for the suggestion, I took advantage of the Best Buy Method yesterday (Black Friday) and took screen shots so we'll see! Now I just have another question for you guys. Since I wanted the Note 4 and my wife was fine with the S5, I did the following yesterday. Just wondering once both phones arrive, what the best/safest way to avoid pending activations would be:

Line 1 - UDP(my line) used best buy method to order s5 for $1 for my wife
Line 2 - 2GB TD (wifes line) ordered Note 4 for $200 online from Verizon for me :-)

Should I activate the Note 4 for my wife when it arrives and then just swap devices to me using my SIM or just throw the SIM away when it arrives and immediately put mine in?
Same thing for the S5, should I just put my wife's SIM in it when it arrives and just hope both pending activations fall off?
Has anyone tried calling lately to ask Verizon to remove the pending activation? (just wondering if that still works)

Thanks in advance! :-)

The BestBuy method involves nothing more complicated than putting your old SIMs into your new devices. It is important that you do not use the new SIM cards. When the new devices arrive remove the new SIM cards, put in old SIM cards, then make a phone call with each new device and that is the end of any "activation." You do not have to go online to swap anything else if the calls go through.

If later you and the wife wanted to swap devices but keep your phone numbers that is as simple and swapping SIM cards and completing a phone call also.

Hope that helps

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Shortwave, or anyone else: I've read the last 50 pages or so to get conversant.
My wife and I have Family Shareplan 500 from many years ago.
Hers: UDP Iphone 4 Upgrade eligible
Mine: non-smart flip phone. Upgrade eligible.

My thought is to upgrade my flip to an Iphone 6, go ahead and pay the minimum data, which I assume would be 1 or 2 Gb for $29.99. I am ok with that. I had other devices before I retired, but now need to get newer equipment. Any downside to buying from Costco, or it BB the only safe source?

Part two would be to then, after a week or two, transfer my wife's upgrade to my new plan and purchase a second Iphone 6, which is what she wants, and when it gets here, activate it on my line, then, after making calls and texts, activate it on her line, thereby saving her UDP.

From what I've read, I wouldn't need to destroy or transfer any SIM card, but I could.

A final question is what would be involved with getting an IPad Air 2 to go with all this? Obviously not going to a new plan, but what are my options for the IPad? Also would it make any sense to try to tether or hotspot to the UDP, or is that out of the question?

Thanks, all.

Thanks so much shortwave! That definitely helps! Just almost seemed "too easy" so I had to ask to make 100% sure before the devices arrived! Looking forward to reporting back good news! ;-) Almost makes me wonder why Verizon even bothers sending a new SIM with the upgraded phones? Is there actually any advantage for the user to activate the phone using the SIM that's shipped?

Actually, one detail I forgot to mention was that I transferred the upgrade from my mother's basic line to my wifes. Should this matter? My contract end date is showing 2016, but my wife's/mothers hasn't updated yet? Wondering if since that phone was ordered from Verizon online if they are waiting for an activation to update the end contract date? Will this cause any problems?

Just go to through Best buy and order the upgrade Iphone 6 on the Dump phone line (and select keep your existing plan) and once it arrives remove the SIM card that it came with and insert her SIM card. I just did this exact thing this Friday, my dump phone shows the extended contract and no data plan or pending activation. The UDP line shows the Iphone 6 and the UDP is still in tact. I have checked this every day a couple of times just to make sure because am paranoid.

I have also checked for any pending activation by going through the update device and transferring upgrade from another device into the Dump phone line. I was able to transfer an upgrade from another device into the Dump phone line and I didn't see any pending activation. Is there another way to check for pending activation? Or am I ok.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Please advise:
I have two Verizon phone lines. Both have UDP. Both have Droid Razr Maxx. Would like to upgrade to Samsung S5.

Upgrade using Best Buy or Costco, ship to home, and then when you get them throw away the included SIM cards and insert your current active SIM cards. BOOM, you're up and running, with subsidized phones, and unlimited data!
