Your situation is pretty simple and both dumb lines can be used:
1) Through Verizon online, order the new smartphone using a basic line's upgrade on the basic line, picking the 2GB data plan for the basic line and have it shipped to home not shipped to store;
2) When the new smartphone arrives, do not turn it on, rather log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device; and
3) Select an unlimited line and that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the new smartphone and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the new smartphone and follow the directions to activate the new smartphone on the UDP line. Just want to verify, when upgrading from a dumb line, there is NO issue using the SIM that came with the phone? the dumb line will stay dumb as in $9.99/month?
You can do this method twice; though, I recommend waiting about a month between each time.I will wait, I just read that Nexus 6 will be out in 2 days for Verizon... Also, if you wife goes from the S3 to the Note 4, she just needs use the old SIM in her phone rather than activating the new one. this is related to first question. If she ends up betraying the Android platform and goes the apple way, do you recommend getting a nano card from Verizon prior to ordering, or is ok to use the one shipping with the Iphone 6 plus and be able to keep the dumb line dumb. NOTE, i just went trough the process on my Veryzon without ordering and using Promo code TECH30 to get 30% discount on the Note 4 which brings the device down to $209, however, it seems like there's no way around the $40 upgrade fee from a dumb to a smart phone, so , total due today will be $249 + taxes.../ The Moto X to Note 4 will require you to use the new SIM unless you get a nano to micro adapter.
