[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How do I transfer upgrade to the basic phone lines on BB.com? I don't see that option there or on Verizon.
Some people get the option others do not. The best buy site is inconsistent with the transfer upgrade. I know I have not been able to transfer upgrades on best buy. If you don't see it, you might be one of the unlucky ones.

I see the upgrade checker on BB. Is it supposed to ask if I want to transfer? I managed to find the transfer on Verizon as well.

I have never been able to transfer upgrades on Best Buy. I can't help you out.

Your method is solid and correct; though, you don't need to do steps 5 and 6. You won't need new SIM cards and can activate the new phones on lines 1 and 2. Once you put the old phone back on line 3, the SIM cards in the new phone are free and safe to use.

If you look at the SlickDeals thread, you are doing the 4ever method.

I just started this and everything went fine (ordered 6 on TDL activated and then switched old phone back on)
until I got to activating on my UDL. Verizon stopped and loaded a page that said:

I did not want to order a sim from verizon at this point for fear it might screw up my UDP line so I canceled out.
I think this means the sim is locked to the TDP line from which it was ordered on. Maybe a recent change...?

What is best way to get a nano sim for 6 to put on my UDP line?

It should be noted I did not "switch" devices between numbers/lines (second option). I activated and then switched devices on tiered line.
Now I am trying to activate 6 on one of my unlimited lines

Has anyone seen this page before?
Thanks for any advice

Did you try to use the switch device on the Verizon website? You should be able to reactivate the old sim that came with the upgrade on the tiered line. It used to take 24 hours, but I think you can do it right away now.

If you need a new sim and don't want to involve Verizon you can order from eBay or purchase one at a Verizon authorized retailer.

If you still have the upgrade available on the unlimited line you should be able to get another sim for free from Verizon with no danger of loosing unlimited.

That page is standard and it is safe to proceed. Just select use existing SIM as you'll use the SIM that came with the phone. On the next page, you'll enter the SIM number. After that the SIM will be reprogrammed to your unlimited line.

SIM cards can be reused and reprogrammed to fit different data plans and phone numbers.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

First of all, I want to thank those that have spent their valuable time responding to all of the inquiries on this thread.

After following this thread for weeks now, I'm trying to understand when there are differences between ordering from Verizon versus from Best Buy. For example, when trying to upgrade an UDP line using an upgrade transferred to a basic line, when ordering from Verizon my understanding is that you use the sim that comes with the phone and activate the phone directly on the UDP line by entering the Imei and sim number in the Verizon website under the 'activate new device option', so long as you don't turn the phone on first.

On the other hand, if you order through Best Buy, you would need to destroy the sim that comes with the phone and use preferably your old sim, perhaps having to cut it or adapt it to the size of the new phone's sim. Is that accurate?

Thanks in advance. 😊

For the most part, there is very little difference between using Best Buy or Verizon depending on how many lines a person has. If a person has a single line, then the Best Buy method is really the only option. If a person has multiple lines, he or she has a variety of different options and it becomes a matter of comfort.

Verizon told me the only way to port a number is over the phone. If I do it over the phone I think I will lose unlimited data. Is there any other way to port my number from Google Voice to my Verizon phone?

I would use the transfer upgrade with both scenarios. I would transfer the upgrade to Line 3. You can do this through Verizon and some people can do this through Best Buy.

When doing this you can activate on line 3 and then swap the phone/sim using the transfer option on the Verizon website.

The other thing is to transfer the upgrade and not activate the phone on line 3. This will leave you with a pending activation. It should drop off in a couple months. If getting a nano sim you could cut your down or get a new one activate on your line.

I don't believe there is any other way to port a number. The port should not affect your unlimited data. What did they say when you called?

Just do the following:
1.) Log into Best Buy or Verizon and transfer your upgrade from Line 1 to Line 3.
2.) Order the phone you want on the tiered line and have it shipped to home
3.) When the new phone arrives, activate it on the tiered line.
4.) Once activated on the tiered line, wait at least an hour. Test calls, texts, and data to make sure it works.
5.) After confirming the new phone works as normal, shut it down.
6.) Log into Verizon and reactivate the old phone that was on the tiered line previously. This now frees up the new phone to be moved to Line 1.
7.) Now activate the new phone on Line 1.

When you do step 7, you'll either use the new SIM that came with the phone (you'll end up recoding it to unlimited data) or use your old SIM (if the new phone uses Micro). Either way, just follow the steps online at My Verizon and it will tell you what to do.

Why do you keep dealing with incompetent reps? :-)

You can port your number online and not have it affect unlimited data. Just go here: Local Number Portability FAQs | Verizon Wireless and follow the steps at number 3 under General Information. You can do everything online through My Verizon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

My question is about ordering a phone on a dumb phone line. I understand how all this works except how to not trigger a data activation on the dumb phone line. Want to order a new phone on a dumb phone line that has no data, don't want data on this line, and transfer to my UDP line. Is best buy the only way,
or can I order from verizon as well? Comcast has 2 rebate card if I order through verizon. Last day today.

Thanks everyone for you posts. This thread is long and confusing with so many different scenarios that I am asking my questions in detailed and step by step procedures so it may help others.

So if I transfer the upgrade from #1 phone/line (UDP current Micro SIM Card) to #3 phone/line (TDP current Micro SIM Card) and order a new phone (I do both myself online signed onto Verizon) that has a Nano SIM card and will be shipped to me.

1. I will not be changing any SIM cards between phone at any time?

2. When I get new phone and with a new Nano SIM card I activate both on #3 phone/line for minimum 1 hour. How do I activate the new phone? Do I just turn it on and follow instructions or do I sign onto Verizon, with phone off, and follow instructions?

3. This will deactivate the old phone and SIM card on phone.line #3.

4. I turn the new phone off and sign onto Verizon online and reactivate the old phone on line #3. What exactly am I looking for on Verizon to accomplish this?

5. After I accomplish step 4 above how exactly do I activate the new phone on line #1? Do I do it same as when I activated the new phone on line #3?

Thanks

You can order through Comcast/Verizon if you wish. As long as you never activate the phone on the dumb phone line, you'll be fine. Just do the following:

1) Through Verizon online, order the new smartphone the UDP Line wants using a basic line's upgrade on the basic line, picking the 2GB data plan for the basic line and have it shipped to home not shipped to store;
2) When the new smartphone arrives, do not turn it on, rather log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device; and
3) Select the UDP Line and that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the new smartphone and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the new smartphone and follow the directions to activate the new smartphone on the UDP line. (You can also swap SIM cards if they are same size rather than typing in the IMEI and SIM numbers)

These three steps will get you a new smartphone and not give you the $30/ 2 year commitment as the new phone is never activated.

Your steps are correct. To give you more detailed answers:

1.) You will not be changing SIMs at any time since they are different sizes. It will be safe because the new nano-SIM will eventually be reprogrammed to your unlimited data.

2.) To activate the new phone just follow the directions that come with the phone. You can activate it on the tiered line by either going online or calling Verizon from a different phone on the plan.

3.) Correct. Activating the new phone will deactivate the old phone on the tiered line.

4.) To reactivate the old phone, log into Verizon. On the main page, you should see a section called "My Devices". Just to the right of that title you'll see a link called "Activate or Switch Devices". When you click this link, you'll then select the tiered line. This will bring you to some options. You'll select "activate device" and then "I am activating a device that I previously used with this account". You'll then be able to select the old phone on the tiered plan. Follow the directions and this will lead to reactivation of the old device.

5.) To put the new phone on the unlimited line, you'll do the exact same steps as #4. Just this time select your unlimited line in the beginning.

After these steps, enjoy your new phone!

Thanks, When I do this I will come back and post exactly what I had and did for others benefit. Not that it hasn't been posted before.
