[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

BigWaveDave25 - just got off phone with two different VZW reps - this is NO GO. The only plan they can do for me is a loyalty plan with a 1 year contract for $35.00/month...a bunch of plans changed as of July 1. Since I only had an individual plan, there appears to be NO WAY to add an additional line, thus no way to pull an upgrade off. This clinches it for me with Verizon...I am going to switch carriers when my contract is up next year.

I need to sit down and do the math...I was told I could cancel my contract for $240...might be worth it to just be done with Verizon once and for all!
Aww BOO, that sucks! Sorry to hear that. I started to wonder if it was only the old Nationwide Family accounts that were allowed to add additional ones for the $10/mo.
And so, as of today July 1, plans have changed again?? What the heck, I wonder now if even the Nationwide Family plans are cut off from adding lines? Sneaky bastards mentioned nothing about any changes coming or anything that would encourage me to go ahead and add the line that day vs. waiting a week...

We've considered leaving as well. If you decide to leave, you could more than cover your ETF by selling your S3 on Swappa. They are still pulling $300-400 depending condition etc. Something to consider.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I've had the dumb phone on my Family talk and text plan for years.

I have a sneaky feeling that Verizon is "on" to the loophole and they are cutting off avenues to get around the upgrade swap. They have the best coverage in my area, but I am tired of being repeatedly raped with their pricing. I think it's time to cut my losses and start checking out the competition, as Big Red obviously doesn't need the little fishies like moi...

Hope you have better luck in your quest than I did...

My guess is it is because he was on an Nationwide Individual Plan, not family. I am on a Nationwide Family plan and can add lines still. In his post he said he was on an individual plan.

Not to be the bad guy, but you've never been able to add a 2nd line to a verizon single line plan for an extra $10/month. If you are on the old family nationwide plan, minimum 2 lines, yes, but single line no.

VZ gets draconian at times, but that's not anything that has changed, even from when unlimited data was available. Can't fault them on that. I'm in the same boat, I added a dummy line to get my S3 on a family plan, and will add another to get an iphone5 for the wife. You're pretty much out to lunch on VZ if you're on a single line plan. You may be able to buy a line off someone and do an AOL with the VZ CSR, but I haven't read anything about Verizon letting people convert from the old single line plan to the old nationwide family plan, in the post share-everything period. Try that and let us know.

OK, I figured as much but didn't know for sure.
SO I am still a little fuzzy on purchasing the new smartphone on the dumbline and how that all works to keep from having to start a 2yr data contract on that line. "They" have to activate the phone on the line with the MEID etc... but what is the key to keeping "full activation" or whatever off the dumb line? Do I just need to keep them form actually turning the phone on and going through the setup process to "complete" the activation?
What steps did you do at this point for your S3 and future i5 for the wife... [which is exactly what I am trying to do for my wife].
OR am I over thinking this and all that will happen is after I put the dumbphone back on the line it will "automatically" downgrade the line contract back to basic talk and all I'll have to pay is the $10/mo for 2 years...? Thanks for your help!!

Hope you have better luck in your quest than I did...
Thanks! And I will definitely report back on how things go [once I have a better understanding on the process, so I can pull the trigger on this].

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hoping someone can help - I've read a lot of this thread but not all and didn't see my situation.
Currently have two Droid Charges on shared plan with unlimited data. Both are eligible for an upgrade but I only want to upgrade one (to a GS4) since wife is happy with hers. I don't have any other old phones lying around to add to a third line. Any suggestions appreciated!!

Ok, so here's what I did, if this helps.

Had 3 lines on the old family plan, all unlimited. VZ allows you have to up 5 lines without seeking additional permission from VZ themselves.

So.. back in october, BB had the S3 for $99 on new/upgrade line. I wanted the Note 2, but it wasnt out yet, and couldnt wait for the overdue ICS release for the thunderbolt anymore. I had a $35 BB GC, to offset the activation fee, and I was enrolled in BB's original buyback plan, and ending up getting $150 for trading in my tbolt. So after reading various forums, I figured paying just over $240 to buy a new phone and keep unlimited data was a win-win. The dummy line costs $10/month plus tax, its like $11 something, and you pay that for 24 months. At the end of the 24 months, you either dump the line, or use the upgrade again to repeat the process.

So, I goto BB, and tell them I'd like to add a line to my family plan and buy the S3 for $99. No problem they said. I was asked if Id like to change to share everything, I said no, I'd like to keep my current plan as my other lines are unlimited, no problem she said. So she went through her various screens, I chose a phone # for the new line, she unboxed the phone, turned it on, I signed my name at the various steps of activation, and with being a smartphone, a data plan needed to be chosen, so I said the 2gb base plan ($30) was fine, she completed activation, completed the purchase, I gave her the GC, and my total was $99 + tax on $699, so I walked out of there like $150 out of pocket, with a brand new activated S3.

Played around with it that night, as I wasnt concerned about data usage. The NEXT day.. I went to a corporate VZ store, and they switch the tbolt and S3 between the associated lines, and now the S3 is on my original unlimited line and the tbolt on the 2gb limit line. Then I wasn't exactly clear on the converting the new line to a dummy line. I called VZ to drop the data plan on the new line, since I wasnt even using the tbolt at this point, but when they asked for an IMEI from a dumbphone , I said that I didnt have one. A few days later, I ended up going to a corporate VZ store by work and explained my problem to one of the CSR's there. He was entirely familiar with the "alternate activation" process and said no problem. He asked me if I had a dumbphone, I said no. So he ended up putting some dumbphone IMEI on my account, which I think according to some other forums is a dummy IMEI they have access to. I believe it's available in the beginning of this thread. I made a note of it, and put it somewhere so I could perform this again on another line. Anyways, he did that, dropped the data plan, prorated me for 4 or 5 days use of the data plan, and end result is the new line costs me $10/month+tax with the dummy phone. I'm going to do the same thing with the iphone5, as soon as Frys has it back in stock. They have it for $124 until friday.

On my line alone, I use anywhere between 4-10gb/month, as I tether everyday. The $10/month fee is well worth the cost of unlimited as the data cost would be rediculous. Same thing with getting my wife the iphone5. With LTE, her data usage will go way up, she already manages to pull down 3-4gb/month on 3G with an iphone4s, and I expect her to use the iphone5 to the fullest extent!!

So anyways, hope that helps. Please note, I was already on the legacy family plan, which is a requirement to do the alternate activation.

Make sure you can do this with Fry's before you try. Best Buy, Verizon and I think maybe Radio Shack yet you do this, but some places when charge a fee if you don't keep the phone you buy on the same line for a certain amount of time (meaning months not days). And the fee is usually high. I don't know if Fry's does this but you need to make sure before you do it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

MM48-
Awesome, thank you for posting your story! That clears it up for me - that once you activate the smartphone on the line and it becomes a data line, you CAN revert it back to a basic line once the dumbphone is reactivated on it, only now it's a 2yr contract instead of month-to-month as before. I avg in the high 20's and my wife does around 3 per month, so we are definitely willing to pay up $10 a month to keep that ability. ;) Thank you!

One more thing... what do mean by "legacy" family plan? One that is prior to the new "share everything" plans? We have the Nationwide Talk Share from 4 years ago that doesn't share data, is that what you mean by legacy?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Correct, you're on the "legacy" plan, as its no longer available for new customers.

Thanks for the heads up about frys, I think its safe though. I paid no extra ETF at BB for doing the line switch. I think its mainly amazon that pulls that BS. Costco is also safe, my coworker did the alternate activation there to get a new Note 2.

Just noticed I posted in the reply quote from the previous post, that's a monday fail! I guess I "obama'd" it!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am so glad I found this thread. We have 4 lines with VZW - 2 smartphones with unlimited data and 2 basic phones with no data. All lines have an upgrade available. But it was really frosting my cookies when I did the math and found that the Share Everything plan was actually going to cost me about $40/month MORE than what I pay now for the same configuration of phones, but only have 4GB shared instead of unlimited on 2 lines. I could care less about unlimited talk since we are doing fine sharing 700 minutes!

So here's the deal -- one of the basic phone lines belongs to my older son who wants a smart phone. We want no part of trying to manage his data usage, so he will most likely be leaving our account and getting his own from wherever. For now, we plan to keep the other basic phone line for our younger son. So what I'm reading here is that we could use the upgrade available on the basic line we're keeping to get whatever smart phone we want, reactivate the dumb phone, and activate the new phone on the unlimited line and all will be happy and we'll have a new smartphone on unlimited data. And still be holding the 2 upgrades currently sitting on our smart phone lines?

So what I'm wondering is if we can then transfer the older son's upgrade to the younger son's line before older son leaves VZW, and then repeat the upgrade process using the younger son's basic line to get a new smartphone on our other smartphone line. Is there a limit on how many times/how frequently a line can be upgraded if you have upgrades available on other lines on the account? If we transfer an upgrade, does that change the contract for the line that "donated" the upgrade? And we could later transfer the upgrades currently sitting on our smartphones without affecting the data plan on the smart phones?

Thanks!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

In my experience so far with trying to transfer upgrades, you cannot transfer an upgrade from an unlimited data line to another line of any kind, without losing unlimited on the donor line. I have 3 I cannot use for this reason, it sucks.

Wrong, just read the first 29 pages, people are doing it all the time, including myself.

If you transfer the upgrade from your older son's phone to the younger sons phone you could get another phone however your older son's number is now tied into another 2 year contract so you will not be able to drop this line for 2 years without an ETF. But you can have them put a dummy MEID number on it to get it down to $10/mo. But in answer to your other question, yes you can keep transferring upgrades to the younger son's phone and get another upgrade, it will just tie the donating phone number / account up with another 2 year contract. Do you use that much data on both unlimited phone's, perhaps trade phones with your older son so he will have unlimited data and you don't have to worry about his data use. Unless it will cause problem with everyone knowing you by that particular phone number. I'd be afraid of messing up your grandfathered unlimited plan if you'd swap phone numbers.

I've read every single page, I've been to multiple VZ corp stores, and have talked to multiple VZ CSR's, and any transfer of the upgrade results in the loss of unlimited data. So if you know some other secret, let me know. I'd love to be able to use it.

Either it's changed or they are misinformed or they are lying to you. I've transferred and upgraded 4 phones so far without losing unlimited data. That was last year but from recent posts I haven't seen any indication that it's changed. There are however several posts from others saying they've had the same experience with Verizon CSR's and Corp Stores saying the same thing and then being able to do it anyway.

They do say that and it works anyways.

I totally hear what you're saying, and I've explored every angle of this instore, on the phone, and with internet reps online, same answer.
They flat out say that transfering the upgrade from the unlimited data line to the dumbphone line will result in the unlimited data line going back on contract, and being put on tiered data as unlimited data is no longer available. I cannot get past that roadblock. Any assistance would be welcome. I've tried every avenue I can think of with them.

That line will go back to a two year contract but you do not lose your unlimited data. Have done it.
