[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 1: iPhone 4S - UDP - upgrade
Line 2: iPhone 5S - TDP - no upgrade

Transferred upgrade from line 1 to line 2 and ordered Galaxy S5 intended for line 1. S5 arrived today and I was attempting to activate on line 2 for an hour as recommended, but I get the following message on vzw when I try to activate the phone:
Your request cannot be completed
We cannot process your request at this time, please try again later.
Does this happen? I am trying to avoid contacting anyone at VZ. Anyone else encounter this error? Do I just need to wait and try again or is this just going to keep happening? Thanks.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Anyone have Best Buy cancel their order? I got an email asking to call them ("Problem With Your Order "), I avoided doing so based on some of the posts I've seen. My Verizon plan changed from month to month with an upgrade available to as if i got the upgrade (not available for another 2 years). Should I expect it to reset on its own or should I call Verizon? If I do get the upgrade back, is it worth trying again with BB or am I out of luck?

Thank you.

Call Best Buy to cancel your order. They should be able to reset your plan back to its original state.

How are you trying to activate the phone? Online or by calling the activation number? If it's online, just try again later as there is probably something wrong with the system.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

This doesnt work anymore - go online and test yourself, when you are checking out on the upgrade, it says you must keep the data plan on that extra line for the length of the contract. So you will end up adding $30 to your bill. Only way it would work is if you have an extra smartphone that is eligible to upgrade, you cant use a basic phone upgrade - they figured it out.

For those saying just dont activate the phone when it comes in and the plan wont change - you wont be able to activate that phone on the other line because the sim and IMEI will be locked. The only way would be to call in and have them do it but they will most likely realize what you are wanting to do and require a change to the unlimited data plan - unless you get someone really nice.

Do you have proof; otherwise, please stop spreading this rumor as this is false. Plan changes do not happen until a person activates the SIM that is shipped with the new phone. So, yes the checkout screen will say a person must keep data for life of the contract, it does not kick in until a person actually activates the new smartphone on the basic line. People can get around this by activating the new smartphone directly onto the unlimited line using either the old SIM or the IMEI/SIM numbers that ship with the phone.

So you know for a fact this happened? It happened to you, recently?

Or are you just assuming that is what will happen. Because many hundreds of people on this forum have personal experience that you are wrong...the data plan follows the SIM not the device.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

We all know that we want to keep our unlimited data plans if you are lucky enough to still have one and we also all probably don't want to pay full retail if we don't have to. Well, to help, I have an ongoing thread in the HTC Thunderbolt forums about keeping unlimited data and I wanted to clean that thread up a bit and post up a step by step set of instructions here of one method that you can use to keep unlimited data with Verizon Wireless. You can read through the thread here but the instructions below pretty much sum up the most common method without purchasing at full retail: http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...s/220111-keeping-unlimited-data-question.html

I have not completed this process as I am still waiting for the phone to arrive (Note 2) and once it does, I will edit this post and revise the instructions if need be. This is exactly how I am upgrading to the Note 2 while keeping unlimited. You can see in the Thunderbolt thread that this method has been verified to work previously and has also been verified by VZW that it will work. I don't always trust the VZW people but this is pretty straight forward and I can see how it works. Maybe an "insider" can post up their thoughts or any additional instructions.

How to Keep Unlimited Data-Currently in a Family Share Plan-with this method, you must meet 2 criterion. First, you must currently already be on a Family Share (not Share Everything) plan and second, you need to have an upgrade available on a basic line that is currently on that plan.

(1)Figure out which lines are available for upgrade within your plan. DO NOT use an upgrade that currently has unlimited unless you have no other choice because you will lose unlimited data on that line. Example: You have a family share plan with 3 lines. 2 are smartphones both with unlimited data and 1 is a basic phone with no data. You would want to use the basic phone line for the upgrade. If you only currently have 2 lines and both are smartphones with unlimited data, using this method, you will have to lose unlimited on one of the lines in order to upgrade but you can switch the newly purchased phone over to the unlimited line.

(2)Use which ever line you chose for upgrade, ideally a basic line, and purchase the new phone at the subsidized price making sure that you are using the basic line upgrade and not your unlimited line upgrade. You will have to temporarily add data(choose the 2gb $30 plan) to that line and you'll see why in STEP (3).

(3)Once you receive your new phone, activate it onto the line that you used to upgrade which will deactivate the current phone on that line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Correct. This specific method does not work, but if look at the directions being given you'll notice a major difference. People are not activating the smartphone on the basic line and then reactivating the basic phone. This will get you stuck with the data plan.

The directions being given bypass the data requirement because the new smartphone is activated directly on the unlimited line and NOT the basic line. This is the key difference between the two methods. The old way gets stuck with a data plan, the new way does not.

Trying online hence the text error code. Still getting error and live chatted with a rep that said that the system was not down. Can I activate over the phone? Does this kill the UDP?

I ordered from VZW online, not a 3rd party retailer, so I don't see anything wrong with activating it using the automated VZW phone line. Will leave it activated on the TDP line for an hour and see if I can reactivate the old TDP phone and activate the new phone on my UDP line on the VZW website.

If you upgraded on a tiered line, it's safe to call Verizon for activation.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am a little confused I've done the BB method before using my dumb line but now my situation is as follows
My husband wants to update a phone on our verizon account:

I'm the account holder and here is our set up:
1)husband iPhone 5s - UDP (eligible for upgrade)
2) iPhone 6 - UDP (eligible for upgrade)
3) Basic Line (no upgrade)

Now I am not sure if I can do that with my two UDP lines. Can you help?

To answer my own question. I called BestBuy support (1-877-702-2211) and their mobile specialist did something with Verizon to set my account back - the changed showed up in <10min. They told me there was a "pre-activation failure". I'm not sure exactly what that means but they said they would put a note in my account that should it happen again to go ahead and "fix it". Hopefully that does not mean activating the phone with the new plan because I would like to try again.

What new phone does he want?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

He wants an iphone 6 or 6 plus and has currently an iphone 5s

Easy enough:

1) through Best Buy or Verizon online, transfer the upgrade from line 1 to the basic line.
2) order the iPhone and have it shipped to home.
3) when it arrives do not turn it on or try to charge it.
4) remove the SIM card that comes with the new phone and destroy it.
5) power off your husband's phone and remove its SIM card.
6) take the SIM card from your husband's phone and put it in the new iPhone.
7) turn on the new iPhone and give it a few minutes to activate.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all - I have a single-line with unlimited data and I want to upgrade my phone. My current phone is Galaxy S4 and I want to upgrade to the Galaxy S6 Edge. I am upgrade eligible.

Most of the examples in this thread are for multiple lines which don't apply to me. What steps should I carry out to make sure I don't lose the data? :)

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.

1.) Order the S6 Edge from Best Buy online and have it shipped to home.
2.) When the phone arrives, do not turn it on and plug it in
3.) Remove the SIM card from the S6 edge and destroy it
4.) Power off your S4 and remove its SIM
5.) Cut your SIM card from a micro to a nano size (buy a SIM cutter off Amazon if you need help)
6.) Put your freshly cut SIM card into the S6 edge and turn it on

Give the S6 edge a few minutes to activate and enjoy the new phone.

Thanks dusoccer10. Just to make sure, destroy = cut it up, not just throw in garbage. Correct?
Also, when I select "Upgrade my device" from the options available in attached screen shot, yes?
