[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What if I was to Upgrade to a S7, and a guy at work upgraded to a S7 and then we just swapped phones? We both UDP. I think the last S7 I bought from best buy online had already been turned on, it had a ship from store tag in the box. I wonder if that are turning them on before they get shipped out?

Haven't heard of BB turning on phones before shipping, they for sure are not activating them because than you wouldn't have a phone until it got to you (would knock your current phone off). But if you are really worried about that you can just order and have shipped from Verizon.

Bottom line is since they are coming from different lines that should work.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Glad I found this forum. I read through most of these and seems the best way is to go through the best buy method sell the phone and buy full price. My questions is this. I want to get the S7 Edge to sell from Best buy but it looks like they are out of stock. Does this method also work through verizonwireless.com upgrade process? (once receive phone destroy sim and sell phone?) Will this work or should I use the best buy method and just pick another phone to sell?

My Line S5 Unlimited Data Upgrade available.

Catching up to speed - here is what i have going on. (FYI: Have done this 2 years back for G2's and it worked with the BBM)

So -

- LG G2 to S6 using BBM
- S6 uses Nano and LG has a Micro (or w/e). Cut down the card and put into S6
- S6 recognizes the number, restarts, seems to work but then says unable to recognize card
- Got a new SIM from verizon for Nano, host of problems. long story short had to return S6 and in motion to return the UDP (IT STUCK IT ON A GIG PLAN... LOL?)

My question... i still have another line ready. My work phone (iPhone 6) uses Nano. If i were to order a new phone using the BBM, could I:

- first goto a VZW store for a replacement SIM for a Nano
- activate it VIA my work phone
- then transfer the new Nano SIM into the new S6? Does the BBM even work anymore?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

so.....really frustrated with verizon.

i had previously posted on the pre-order thread, that when i added the s7 edge to my shopping cart, it added the additional 2 GB data plan for $30 to my already existing unlimited data plan. i finally got around to activating my phone yesterday. and now, my unlimited data plan is GONE. replaced by the 2 GB data plan.

background info: grandfathered unlimited data plan (paying the addition $20 they instituted); not under contract; used device payment plan for the s7.

calls to verizon as follows:
1. CSR states it's not an issue to get back on the unlimited data plan. she says she sees notes left by previous CSRs about my questions regarding the unlimited data. she said that the change to unlimited data would be in a few minutes.

after i see that the change hasn't been made, and i'm getting texts and emails that i'm over my data allowance, i call verizon again.

2. CSR says the previous CSR submitted an invalid pricing request. and that it takes 10-14 days to approve or deny that request. and that i'll get an email regarding verizon's decision. she also said that the previous CSR was incorrect in telling me that it is will be instantly updated (no kidding).

has anyone experienced this? apologies, i couldn't read through all 466 pages of this thread...

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I scanned through the last 100 pages of this 466-page thread and got confused.

Here's my situation:

Line 1 has unlimited data, no upgrade available at this time
Line 2 has no data (basic phone), no upgrade available at this time

Can I order the S7 for $99 from Best Buy's website and just put
a basic phone on that line? I want to put Line 1's exisiting nano
SIM card into the new S7. I don't mind paying the monthly $15
access fee(just like on my current Line 2), but don't want to pay
the $30/month data fee for 24 months.

Thanks!

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Yes, but if you ever accidentally mix up the phone/sim combos you will lose unlimited.

You'll also have to wait at least a month between the two upgrades until the pending activation falls off the first line you use for the upgrade.

The safest thing to do would be to sell both phones and use the money to buy new ones outright.

Mixing up the sims/phones won't be an issue. I ordered both phones and they'll be here tomorrow. I wanted to take advantage of the $99 deal with free wireless charger from best buy. Would it be possible to put the sim in each phone and turn them on at the same time to avoid the wait time? Worst case scenario one doesn't activate and I have to wait for the pending activation to fall off or sell the phone? I prefer not to sell them because of the money loss but if I end up having to I'll just have to deal with it.

I've been reading through this thread and the Slickdeals thread so let me see if I can help.
Sounds like you tried to do the original BBM that doesn't work anymore. I believe to restore your UDP you must return the phone and they can put your plan back once they see your upgrade is available again.
I can't remember the term the reps use when restoring the plan but I'm sure that anyone that has made the mistake and the UDP they have returned the device.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

BBM doesn't work anymore.

thats a real bummer.

I was reading back on this thread... looks like the current method to keep UDP is to... Purchase the phone with 2-year pricing, sell the phone for retail, buy a phone for retail...? That right...?

If thats what people are doing and it works - whats the difference between that and the original BBM of swapping SIMs out?

Are there any other current methods out there for keeping UDP without having to pay retail price for the phone? (BTW the pay plan is paying in full still)

I have 2 lines with UDP and both are available for an upgrade - so essentially it sounds like that method just needs the phone ordered on one line (L1)... but activated on the other (L2)?

From my understanding, Big Red is now associating the IMEI of the hardware with your account. Thus, SIM swap alone is no longer sufficient.

As for other methods, if you have a family share plan with at least one TDP phone (and one eligible upgrade), see my posts earlier in this thread about my positive experience at the Costco kiosk.

Best of luck!

thanks for your reply, cool guy! actually, if BBM means best buy method, then no, i didn't use that. i purchased directly from verizon's website. sigh.

Oh! Ordering directly from them and trying to keep you UDP was definitely not recommended. Good luck.

Supposedly of you are paying the $20 a month on the UDP and you buy a new phone using payment plan you can keep UDP. That is what he did, but he lost his UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 1: UDP, upgrade date, 9/29/2017
Line 2: UDP, upgrade date, 9/15/2016

Suppose on 9/15 I order a new phone with promotional pricing from a 3rd party. The contract is renewed for 2 years. The phones arrives, I destroy the provided SIM, and insert the SIM from line 1 into the phone. The assumption is that UDP is preserved on Line 2.

The question is: will I dodge the $20 plan hike on Line 2 or will that increase from $30 to $50 on the next billing cycle?

thanks in advance.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can not use subsidized phones on any line anymore. I believe you will keep UDP on line 2 but will lose it on line 1.

This is correct - Verizon now associates the upgrade with the phone IMEI (mainly that now). Found out when i went to talk to a VZW rep in person and thats what was exactly out of his mouth "The IMEI is the phone i have here in my hand" (tried to play it off like i bought it off CL)

No cosco super close to me but that sounds like thats a no go too though because i dont have a TDP (throttled/timed/??? data plan?). Both my lines are UDP and like to keep them that way.

For those who are asking about getting back UDP im currently trying to do that. Last time I did this 2 years back when the BBM worked i accidentally activated the SIM that was provided with the new phone. All I had to do was return the phone and wait for an email saying that the issue was resolved then try again.

I tried the BBM this time around but didnt know about the IMEI (jumped in before looking back at this thread - assumed it still worked). Returned the phone no problem - called in to verizon and the CSR said they submitted a ticket to change back to UDP and the turn around that i should expect is 3-5 days.

So -

No TDP then no subsidized price? Have only 2 lines, both UDP

Purchase another line then transfer that phone over to a UDP then discontinue the new TDP line?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have been trying to catch up on this thread. I thought I knew what to do.....not anymore!
Line 1, UDP, still under contract
Line 2, UDP, still under contract
Line 3, TDP, eligible for upgrade
Line 4, TDP, still under contract

I planned on getting phone through Best Buy with line 3 upgrade, activating it for couple days. Then go to Verizon and swap with line one. This has worked fine in past without losing UDP. Am I reading correct, that it will no longer work?
