[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Not sure if you're already doing this but it helps push the exchange in some cases. Turn them both off, leave the device that the sim is coming out of off for 10-15 minutes then turn the device you're putting it into on. Check in the "about phone" section of settings that the phone number you think it should be is present.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I thought there was a method where you don't have to swap the SIM cards and just do everything online. Is this not true?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I don't have a non-unlimited data line to use as an upgrade to then swap to keep my unlimited service. Is there anything I can do to keep unlimited?

I have 3 lines. 2 are unlimited and the third is on a 2GB/month plan. All are smartphones. I don't have any basic phones on my plan.

1 unlimited is up for renewal now. The other in about a month. I want to get 2 new phones and would like to keep unlimited.

Thanks.

1 Unlimited Upgrade Available Now
2 Unlimited Upgrade Available in a Month
3 2GB

Transfer upgrade from 1 to 3, by device, activate on 3, activate old device on 3, activate new phone on 1. Then in a month, repeat replacing the 1's with 2's.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Have two smartphones on nationwide family plan with unlimited data on each 700 minutes talk time $10 each line for 500 texts...bill is $149 a month+taxes

While I'd really love to keep my unlimited plans I just dont see the point in adding a dummy line for an extra $10+taxes a month. I'm not a heavy 4g data user because most of the time I'm connected to my wifi but I can easily see with a shiny new LG G2 I could potentially use alot more data. As of right now between the two lines we probably use 2gb or so data a month. But I just don't like the idea of giving up my unlimited data...however the added benefits would be getting rid of the 700 shared minutes and no longer being on a text cap of 500 total messages although in network are unlimited and is the bulk of my texting.

So basically if I upgrade now to the LG G2 I am forced to switch to the new plan which is the same price monthly as Im paying now but instead of 700 shared minutes everythings unlimited ...except the data which is 4gb shared...or could go to 6gb and be paying same amount as if I added dummy line and keep unlimited data.

So would I be foolish to switch to the new plan and lose my unlimited data?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Alright, I need some clarity here, because I'm just not sure what I'm suppose to do. Can someone help me out?

I'm on a family plan (not shared) just the good ol' family plan. Both my dad and I are grandfathered into the unlimited plan.

There are 2 smartphones on this plan. Mine (Galaxy Nexus). My dad (Galaxy Nexus). There is also a basic flip-phone on this plan, my Mom's LG flip phone.

My mom's basic LG flip phone is eligible for an upgrade and I think actually....we all are. Of course, I don't want to lose the unlimited plan, so how do I upgrade to the LG G2 without screwing everything up?

Does the OP's original thread starting post work for me? I'm not sure where to go and how to do all of this.

1 Your Gnex Unlimited
2 Father's Gnex Unlmited
3 Mother's flip phone

Upgrade line 3 to LG G2, activate on line 3, then activate flip phone on line 3, then activate LG G2 on line 1.

I was in essentially the same boat. My phone (Droid BIonic, unlimited 4G), moms phone (flip phone). Here is what I did (and which has worked so far).

1. Upgraded the dumbphone and bought the LG G2 on Verizon wireless using the coupon (verizon30) and put it on the dumbphone line. Turned it on and activate it so that it worked on the dumbphone line.
2. Called Verizon, asked them to re-activiate the dumbphone on the LG G2 line (I had to call verizon because I was not able to do this online for some reason).
3. Once I was sure that the dumbphone was re-activated, I then went and activated the LG G2 on my unlimited line via the website. I did not have to swap out SIM cards between my LG G2 and my Bionic (and actually this would have been impossible to do since they are 2 different sized sim cards). Instead, there is an option on the website that allows you to type in the sim card #. When you get to this step, just enter the # of the LG G2 sim card, and NOT your existing sim card on your Galaxy s4.

Now I have the LG G2 active on my unlimited line, and my mom has her dumbphone active again. My Verizon website still shows me as unlimited 4G, and it shows that she has no data on her line.

The only caveat is I don't know how the bill at the end of this month will account for all these changes. From what I understand, I will be charged the pro-rated amount for the data I used on my mom's line (which should be about $1). I really hope they don't hit me with any phantom charges, but that remains to be seen.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Got a question. I ordered the LG G2 online today on my son's limited line but opted for the pick up in store option.

Picked up the phone and told the guy I didn't need him to activate it, surprisingly he was good with that and just handed me the phone.

So now I'm thinking I can just put my old SIM card in the phone and activate it that way and not worry about all the switching around. Is that right?

Regarding your step 2, what was the issue with re-activating the dumb phone online? Did you get a message saying that you can transfer SIM cards and no other option to actually swap it online?
Also, when you were on the call with the Verizon rep to re-activate your dumb phone, was the dumb phone turned on or off? What information did you have to give to the rep?

Upgrade line 3 to LG G2, activate on line 3, then activate flip phone on line 3, then activate LG G2 on line 1.

Wait, wouldn't I get hit with a hefty charge if Verizon finds out I didn't keep the LG G2 on the flip phone's number?

Everyone is different but the trend of technology is such that even though you may not use that much data now, as newer and more powerful apps, uses come out you will. If you lose your unlimited data now you won''t be able to go back. When my son's went from an IPhone 4 to a iPhone 5 with 4G LTE his usage went from 1GB/mo to 10GB/mo. It was because streaming videos especially Hulu was so painfully slow on 3G he didn't do it. But when he went to the iPhone 5 it was much faster and he used it all the time. If before upgrading you went by his previous usage pattern you'd say he didn't need it and tempted to sacrifice the unlimited for a few dollars a month cheaper. But in the end I'd be paying >$100 / mo. Then when LTE Advanced comes out next year the pipe will be even wider and you'll be tempted to use even more data. So it's an individual choice but you should keep in mind changes in data usage with new phones, new data hungry apps, future usage not just what you've used in the past.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

My father and I share a plan...there's 2 smartphones and 1 flip phone. I'm the only one with unlimited data. The flip phone line has an upgrade, but I don't have access to the actual phone. It was my grandmother's, who has a new prepaid phone and no longer uses the Verizon phone.

If I upgrade her line to the G2 and activate it, I would then have to reactivate her original dumb phone before I switch the G2 to my line, right?

Is it even possible to go through this process without having the flip phone available? She has the phone, but says it doesn't turn on anymore.

Thanks!

You should not have a problem as long as the phone is off. After you get the Phone activate it. You can then switch that line back if you know the IMEI or put a test device on it.

You could also transfer the upgrade to dad's line, activate then swap the phones around.

The error message online said that I had just purchased a new phone (the LG G2) and had not yet activated it. I'm not sure why I got that error since I had already activated the LG G2 on the dumbphone line; in fact, I had already used it to make a couple of calls so I know it was active. The error message actually gave me the phone # for VZW Customer service and told me to call them.

When I called the rep to reactivate the dumb phone, it was OFF. The LG G2 was also OFF. All I had to give the rep was the MEID of the dumbphone. She was able to activate it over the phone without any issues.

when I activated my phone today (had 1 smartphone with unlimited 4G and 1 dumbphone on my family plan), I did not have the dumbphone physically in front of me. All i had was the MEID of the dumbphone, and this was enough (you can find it by removing the battery of the dumbphone and looking inside the back of the phone)

It's true if it works for you. Some people have to call at some point in the process, some don't.

2 Unlimited Upgrade Available in a Month
3 2GB

Transfer upgrade from 1 to 3, by device, activate on 3, activate old device on 3, activate new phone on 1. Then in a month, repeat replacing the 1's with 2's.

Sounds too easy. Does this really work? Verizon doesn't know what is going on?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Alright, well I pulled the trigger. Used the Verizon30 coupon code.

I "upgraded" my mom's basic flip phone to the LG G2. When the LG G2 is delivered, I'll activate it on my mom's basic flip phone line, then re-activate my mom's basic flip phone line. This should drop the data plan from my Mom's basic flip phone line. Next, I log into My Verizon and transfer the LG G2 to my line and activate it there.

This should allow me to keep my unlimited plan, yes?

Am I missing anything here? Activation is done on the phone, but transfer of the phone to my life is done online, correct?
