[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

When I went online to upgrade, there was this warning:
Do you have an existing unlimited data plan?

Here's what you need to know:

With Verizon's new Share Everything plan, unlimited data is no longer available. When you upgrade your device, you will not have unlimited data.

If keeping unlimited data is important to you, you can choose "Replace my device" and pay full retail price for a new device.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

When I went online to upgrade, there was this warning:
yep, you definitely get that warning. But it doesn't make you pick a new plan and your invoice says keep existing plan. However, when you activate, you will be switched to 2GB data plan. After that you have to argue to get unlimited data back or return the phone.

It worked for my friend. YMMV.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

This is kind of an urgent matter, It's my fault though, I should have done this a while ago. Anyways...

My VZW contract is up on the 29th. I'm currently on the 1400 minute NW talk & text family plan with unlimited data. We have 2 lines together on the family plan and we are both do for our upgrades, we have been eligible since August but don't want to lose unlimited data. I was thinking about switching to T-Mobile and getting the unlimited plan for us but it's more expensive than my current plan.

Line 1 - Unlimited Data (Eligible for upgrade Now
Line 2 - Unlimited Data (Eligible for upgrade Now)

Anyways, I need help better understanding this "dummy line" method for keep unlimited data. I'm trying to upgrade to an 32gb iPhone 5s and my wife wants a 16gb 5c. A kind user here at the forums, DayThyme, wrote what to do be I'm still having a hard time what do, I need a very detailed guide on how to do this. Below it says add a line, I thought I needed to add lines since we have 2 phones that need upgraded. This some of the directions I don't understand. I'm also nervous that I'll go ahead and try this only to screw it up and lose my plan/data by doing a step wrong.

1. Add a line - the line will come with a subsidized phone;
2. Pick the 2GB data plan and an iPhone;
3. Activate the new iPhone on the new line;
4. Activate a dumbphone on the new line and drop the data plan (this may happen automatically or you may have to call to get the data plan removed);
5. Activate the new iPhone on one of your unlimited data lines by using the SIM card that came with the iPhone or by getting a new SIM card for it;
6. Transfer one of the unlimited data line's upgrades to the dumbphone line and repeat steps 2-5.

I'm not really tech savvy so this is why it's hard for me to understand. I thank anyone ahead of time for there help. It's pretty urgent that I get this resolved and make the best decision, whether to stay with VZW or say adios.

Thanks for your time and help!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 1 - Unlimited Data (Eligible for upgrade Now
Line 2 - Unlimited Data (Eligible for upgrade Now)

1) Obtain a used Verizon basic phone (I got mine from ebay);
2) Log onto Verizon wireless online;
3) Select Add a Device;
4) Add a 32GB iPhone 5s to your cart, pick the 2GB data plan and check out;
5) When the iPhone 5s arrives, activate it on the new line (Line 3) by following the included directions;
6) Put the basic phone on Line 3 by logging into verizon online and selecting Myverizon, switch or activate a device and following the directions (i.e., type in the IMEI of the basic phone, etc.);
7) Put the iPhone 5s on Line 1 by logging into verizon online and selecting Myverizon, switch or activate a device and following the directions (i.e., type in the IMEI of the iPhone 5s, type in the SIM card number of the iPhone 5s, etc.);
8) Transfer Line 1's upgrade to Line 3 and repeat Steps 4-7 but this time get an 16 GB iPhone 5c for your wife and substitute Line 2 for Line 1 in Step 7; and
9) Transfer Line 2's upgrade to Line 3 and repeat Steps 4-6 but this time get an iPhone 5s to sell to recoup the cost of Line 3.

Step 9 is optional. You can instead stop after completing Step 8 and save the unused upgrade on Line 2 to get a new phone next year or whenever you want a new phone.

If the phones you currently have on Line 1 and 2 have the same size SIM cards as the new iPhones, you can accomplish Step 7 by putting the current SIM cards into the new iPhones.

After you are done buying your phones, log onto verizon wireless online and make sure that the data plan dropped off of Line 3. If it has not, block data on Line 3. I was left with a 75MB data plan on my dummy line and had to call to have it removed, but you can also remove it yourself by blocking data on the dummy line.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

Ok, so, heres the deal.

Ordered the phone online. Recieved an order # and invoice that states no change to plan OR data plan.
Went to BB, waited 10 minutes for a rep at the mobile desk. Grabs phone, starts asking questions. He stated "Everything on the plan is staying the same?" I agreed. He said it again. Did all of the activation stuff. Turns the phone on, put in gmail account etc. etc.

Get in my car and drive home basking in my awesomeness. Arrive, and see a notification that I am over my data limit... Hmmmm thats interesting. Check the my verizon app and sure enough, I have a .645 data charge, and no data plan. Uh Oh... Back to best buy today. I said to myself "Self, take DayThyme's advice, and throw a **** fit". So I called verizon.

First person I get on the line sounded like she had had a long day. Confirms my info, and I laid out that I had just upgraded at Best Buy, the rep stated nothing would change, now I have this message coming up, all my paperwork says nothing was supposed to change yadda yadda (Happy festivus). She puts me on hold for a beat or two, comes back and says those magic words. "Ok, I took care of that for you. You are back on unlimited, but keep in mind, when you upgrade, we no longer have this plan, so You are not supposed to have it. But, it is all taken care of because you have documentation that says you are supposed to". I close my agape mouth, amazed that this actually worked first shot, thank the amazing verizon rep, and hang up.

Log onto verizonwireless.com and my verizon mobile app and BAM... unlimited data for another 2 years (or until they ban the plan all together) on a brand new Note 3 for $200.

Sometimes it pays to be nice, and to get suggestions from people on AC.com. Thanks for everyones help.

Dont know why that link didnt work, and now I am missing the edit function... welp. Thats interesting.

ETA: Thats better

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

That is awesome! Congrats! But yeah, you will definitely get switched off of unlimited data if you first activate the phone on an unlimited data line so it is hit or miss whether or not you can get them to switch you back.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 2 unlimited data plans and 2 dumb phones.
I bought 2 Moto X phones, to activate with my unlimited data plan.
Anything I need to be aware of before calling to activate on that paper they enclosed?

What lines did you buy the phones on? Did you transfer upgrades from the unlimited lines to the dumb phone lines?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was told by Verizon that as long as you first started paying for an insurance policy on the phone within 30 days of purchase that you can switch the phone back on the line and the correct insurance will automatically update. I specifically asked about the switch between an iPhone and an Android.

So I received the Droid Maxx phone today, and activated it on the 2gb line first. I waited awhile but even though the phone was able to make and receive calls with the phone number for the 2gb line (and showed up on My Verizon for the line) according to the My Verizon website when I went to try to do an ESN swap back to the original phone, it said order pending.

I called and had it put back to the original phone, but should I be all set to activate the new Droid Maxx on the unlimited line now? I'm hoping the website was just slow to catch up, but since I activated the phone and made a call on the line before switching back to the original phone, I should be all set?

I really appreciate the help, I just don't want to screw up the unlimited data on my line and be unable to get it back, being very cautious!

Did you call the 1-877 number? Once it is first activated you should be fine, but unfortunately, sometimes the new activations do get stuck. I don't know why, but repeatedly this has happened to people. It is a PITA and you have to get them to push it through if you can't do the switch, but is should be fine to do the switch.

So since the phone was activated and working with incoming and outgoing calls I should be good? They said when I called it the system hadn't updated fully yet to show the Droid Maxx on the line and that it was being slow. They just canceled the processing and put me back on the iPhone 5. Should I have anything to worry about if it may be didn't go all the way through before I switched back? Hours had gone by, and my dad (line 1) wanted his iPhone back so I had to call to put it back.

EDIT Sorry, I think you are saying it's fine.

From what I have been told, you have to call the 1-877 number to get a hold removed from the IMEI of your phone. They do that to deter theft of the devices prior to activation. But once you can make calls, your IMEI is in their database as an activated phone with no hold on the IMEI.

go back in the thread, others have had this happen and all was fine. The key thing is getting the phone up and running on verizon's system on the non-unlimited line.

It's a PITA when this happens and may require phone calls but once activated on the non-unlimited data line you are fine. Getting the system to clear the pending activation so you can do the switch may take some phone calls. This seems to only happen when an iPhone is involved in the process.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

No, bought as no contract phones, eligible a year ago.

I am really confused. You bought the basic phones as no contract phones, yes?

But what about the new Droid Maxx? How did you buy that?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I bought 2 MOTO x phones to replace my 2 smart phones I have, with unlimited data. I bought from Motorola, as no contract, to keep my unlimited data.
