[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Thanks. This is exactly right. It is different from the add a line plan. For those who don't want to pay the money to add a line or do not fully understand how to go that route this is an easier and more hassle free route. At least for the time being until they fix it. It's essentially getting your upgrade from Best Buy, select keep existing plan, ship home, use your current sim card in place of the one pre-installed in the new phone and it should be done. The rep even confirmed with me. Easy.

Not only that, it is the only cost effective way to use your UDP line's upgrade and keep your UDP if you have an individual plan. This is because when you add a line to an individual plan, it converts it to a family plan and when you do the math, the added costs of a family plan (i.e., higher charges for unlimited text/minutes, higher minimum number of minutes, etc.) make it not cost effective to add a line even if you sell the added line's subsidized phone.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Another poster has reported success with a method that does not involve adding a line or transferring an upgrade here:

http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon/351917-how-keep-unlimited-data-get-phone-subsidized-price.html

This is particularly good for those with individual accounts since it is not cost effective to add a line to an individual account just to get a subsidized phone.

Anyone else who tries this method, please update the thread with your results. Screen shots are much appreciated!

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Two things

1. This as far as we know right now was a one time thing, would like to see other people use it with success before we know it will work all the time.

2. In order to get updates from Verizon you will need to put a new SIM card in the phone. Myself along with others used our old SIM and couldn't get the first update that came a week after the phone came out. The ones that went and got a new SIM later then got the update.

I never put in a new SIM and not only couldn't ever get the first but can't download the newest update from a couple weeks ago. So at some point you need to add a new SIM.

yes, I hope others who try this will report their experiences. Screen shots are always a plus!

I wonder if that could be solved by going into Verizon with the phone in about a month and telling them that your phone is acting up and you would like to try a new SIM card? That shouldn't cause any problems with an UDP since the new SIM card will not be tied to the upgrade.

No shouldn't cause any problems, and I doubt you have to wait a month or even make up a story. Probably just need to ask for a new SIM. I just haven't done it yet.

Not really. I already got an update for my LG G2. The rep activated my SIM over the phone. I gave him the number on my SIM. He activated everything over the phone. No issues.

FYI, I got a confirmation from my Verizon csr friend that they are unable to remove the upgrade fee.

yep, that is non-negotiable nowadays. Upgrade fees are being used to fund upgrading the network supposedly.

Sure because they don't raise enough capital to do so as it is by raping people already on their plans, data, et al. Lol

yeah, I know, total BS, but that is what they tell you. Nonetheless, it is non-negotiable - the reps cannot waive upgrade fees.

My friendly csr's explanation what that that's the way Verizon recoups the costs of phones on contract discounts.

$30 doesn't come close to the subsidy. The subsidy is about $15/mo x 24 months = $360.

Actually, it was for service, support and training... Supposedly.

" On April 22, Verizon Wireless is implementing a $30 upgrade fee for existing customers purchasing new mobile equipment at a discounted price with a two-year contract. This fee will help us continue to provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect which includes Wireless Workshops, online educational tools, and consultations with experts who provide advice and guidance on devices that are more sophisticated than ever.

While the upgrade fee is not unique to Verizon Wireless, most devices can be traded in with our green friendly trade-in program at https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...//www.verizon.com/od/trade-in/&token=q21sDz7- as a way to save money or potentially offset the fee completely.

It can be much higher though. For new users who got the note 3 free after visa gc, it could be worth as much as $700

I don't think Verizon pays $700 for the GNote3. But yes, if they ever send those gift cards, what a deal we got!

BTW - I called the gift card line 1-866-347-2229, which is the number I got from calling the Comcast-Verizon partnership line. The rep said she needed both my Verizon and my Comcast account numbers to check on the status of my gift card. I told her I wasn't asked for my comcast account number when I bought the phone and that the promo was not just for comcast customers. She said she couldn't help me without my comcast account number.

So who knows if we will ever get those gift cards.

Well, without contract, you would now pay $700. So for the end user, the subsidy is worth $700 for this purchase.

Of course Verizon didn't pay $700 for it, but Verizon wouldn't sell the note 3 off contract at their cost.

right, but the way this issue was raised was the upgrade fee. The other poster said his CS rep said the $30 upgrade fee was to recoup the cost of the subsidy, which of course, $30 is no where near what the subsidy costs Verizon. My point was what the subsidy costs verizon; not the value of the subsidy to the end user, and I am certain the subsidy costs Verizon more than the upgrade fee.

How much more, idk, but from all I have read, it is about $15/mo, which over 2 years comes out to be $360. And since ATT lowers your bill by $15/mo if you are off contract, that is more evidence that the subsidy likely costs Verizon $15/mo or close to it.
