[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Not really. I already got an update for my LG G2. The rep activated my SIM over the phone. I gave him the number on my SIM. He activated everything over the phone. No issues.
This is really remarkable. I think what it means is that the loss of an UDP is tied to the SIM card that ships with the subsidized phone, not with the subsidized phone itself. So it seems that in verizon's system, it is the SIM card number being activated that prompts the loss of an UDP, not the IMEI of the subsidized phone.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

right, but the way this issue was raised was the upgrade fee. The other poster said his CS rep said the $30 upgrade fee was to recoup the cost of the subsidy, which of course, $30 is no where near what the subsidy costs Verizon. My point was what the subsidy costs verizon; not the value of the subsidy to the end user, and I am certain the subsidy costs Verizon more than the upgrade fee.

How much more, idk, but from all I have read, it is about $15/mo, which over 2 years comes out to be $360. And since ATT lowers your bill by $15/mo if you are off contract, that is more evidence that the subsidy likely costs Verizon $15/mo or close to it.

If depends on the device. The Moto X costs the carriers about $350. So when Verizon sold it for $200 on contract, the subsidy only cost Verizon $150.

Now on the iPhone, that costs the carriers closer to $600.So if you bought it from best buy for $75 after gc, then the subsidy would be worth $525. This didn't take into account the commission of the retailer

I am sure that the subsidy varies, but there is an average and I suspect with ATT's move, it is around $15/mo.

I have read that is it less than $600 but only apple and the carriers know for sure I suppose.

It is crazy that Best Buy doesn't charge the secondary ETF. I took that iPhone off the line within an hour of buying it.

The Moto X costs the carriers $350 and that is substantially lower than other high end Androids. IPhones cost the carrier substantially more than Android.

Keep in mind that this is only the cost of the phone, Verizon pays third parties a substantial commission fee as well.

I think that the subsidy to the carrier is worth more than $15,but they are only reducing the cost by $15

I am sure, but whatever it is, it is more than the $30 upgrade fee by a lot.

Here is the screenshot of when the software was last updated. I received my phone on 1/6/142014-01-10-08-34-33.jpg

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

$30 doesn't come close to the subsidy. The subsidy is about $15/mo x 24 months = $360.
Anyone remember the good old days when Verizon paid you $100 to renew ("New Every Two")? Now they charge you $30. :(

I bought a Maxx at full retail, and they still charged me the $30, so it doesn't have anything to do with the subsidy.

those were the days before Verizon out paced it's competitors in building its 4G LTE network and on the block c spectrum to boot.

I don't really care about the ne2 or upgrade fee... I mean sure they matter, but I would much rather Verizon bring back one year contracts. I paid $30 more to get the Thunderbolt on a one year contract, which to me was a no brainer.

Of course it is just a wish, I know it would never happen.

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Two things

1. This as far as we know right now was a one time thing, would like to see other people use it with success before we know it will work all the time.

2. In order to get updates from Verizon you will need to put a new SIM card in the phone. Myself along with others used our old SIM and couldn't get the first update that came a week after the phone came out. The ones that went and got a new SIM later then got the update.

I never put in a new SIM and not only couldn't ever get the first but can't download the newest update from a couple weeks ago. So at some point you need to add a new SIM.

I have used the same SIM card for three phones now and I have received updates from Verizon, the latest being on the g2...I used the alternate upgrade route to keep my UDP

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

I'm tempted to do this myself. I went ahead and threw a 2nd line on my phone in October (missed out on the Verizon website issue by just a few hours) when I cracked the screen on my old Rezound not even an hour after Verizon fixed their website. So, I have a 2nd line on my phone that's costing me. I'm actually considering jumping to T-mobile's deal where they'll pay the ETF for moving a line to them. I'll have to figure out the math to see if it would be cheaper for me to get a T-mobile phone and have 1 account with Verizon (for my unlimited) and 1 dummy account with T-mobile or just keep the 2nd line on my Verizon account as a dummy phone that serves no real purpose.

I just saw this through their ordering process. I figured I'd see if it would allow me to upgrade without adding a plan.

DO YOU HAVE AN EXISTING UNLIMITED DATA PLAN?

Here's what you need to know:

With Verizon's new Share Everything plan, unlimited data is no longer available. When you upgrade your device, you will not have unlimited data.

If keeping unlimited data is important to you, you can choose "Replace my device" and pay full retail price for a new device.

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

This SIM card swap will not work with the iPhone 4s correct. As far as I can tell, 4s does not have a SIM card.

Yea I saw that before. I posted that same question in the BestBuy thread below. I would just ignore it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I've read this entire thread a couple months ago but I just want to make sure of one thing before I get to far into this. I used an upgrade on a dumb phone and got an S4 from best buy today. I wanted to do all the activations myself, the dumb phone lives two hours away, but the guy said he had to activate it to give me the subsidized price. He said he activated it and then put the dumb phone back onto the newly upgraded line. So my question is should I activate the S4 on the dumb line again just to be sure or just go ahead and transfer the S4 to my UDP line. On my Verizon it shows the S4 as being a phone previously used on this account, I just want to make sure I can put it on the UDP line now. I would be bent if I lost my unlimited lol.

I went ahead and just moved my update eligible line to my dummy line. I'll go ahead and add a new device so I can swap out my mother's phone. Felt kind of weird doing phone shopping while I've still got my Note 3 on me.

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

Thanks for the tip, hope it works!

I purchased Best Buy online this afternoon. Now the wait begins.

Also, Verizon currently running $50 off promo.
I called 1-800-BEST-BUY about price match, he confirmed.

I completed my order. Then I drove to local Best Buy with invoice and proof of Verizon deal and was promptly denied in the rudest way possible. I spoke to 2 reps and a manager texted her two cents from somewhere in the store. Wasn't so much the "no", rather the exasperate smirks, bad attitudes, utter indifference and lack of any courtesy. There were DMV employees off to side saying,"Oh, thats just rude."

Came home called customer service and gave a detailed incident report. Anyways, I'm well aware of fine print in Best Buy's price guarantee - thats why I had called 1-800 # first and had corporate OK before completing the order. Be great to keep unlimited plan, bonus to get price match.

Did you have the phone shipped to your home because if you have a BB rep activate it then you will lose the unlimited plan then will have to call verizon to fight and get it back.
