[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Dang i wish i knew about this thread before paying $550 for my M8 on eBay.
I cut my micro SIM to small and it wouldnt stay in the Nano SIM tray of the M8, so i took it to Verizon and they gave me a Nano SIM for free. Didn't lose unlimited plan. :)

I guess ill try this method for the LG G3 :D

thanks

Of you have a phone in hand they will give you the sim.... No questions asked.

As long as you go to a corporate store. Someone the authorized retailers charge for Sims.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I currently have an iPhone 5s (nano SIM) off contract and a UDP. I'm contemplating getting an S5 just to use my upgrade.

I've read that it's not recommended to use a nano-to-micro SIM adapter as the adapter can bend or break the pins in the phone.
I also have a spare micro SIM from an old phone which is not currently active (but it was used on a prior phone).

Anyone have any recommendations on the best way to execute this deal?
1. Use a nano-to-micro SIM adapter and risk it?
2. Just try sticking the nano in the new phone and then, once the new phone is activated, go to Verizon and ask for a new SIM?
3. Call Verizon when I get the new phone and tell them I have a new phone (and an old SIM) and need to make the old SIM the new active SIM?
3a. Call Verizon when I get the new phone and only tell them I want to switch to the old SIM?

any advice is appreciated. thanks.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

What phone were you using before?
You can always request a SIM card from Verizon, activate it on her line using your old phone if it's a 4g device (I assume it would be 4g since you have successfully updated your line using this method), then upgrade your mom's line from best buy online

I was using the Galaxy Nexus before, it was a 4G phone. The trick with using that SIM card worked for my S5 once it arrives. She wants to do the same trick and keep her UDP however her current phone does not have 4G because her phone is the Iphone 4s. I was wondering what I should do. Can I still do it by just replacing her Iphone sim card in her new S5? or will it not work because her sim isn't 4g? If not what are the steps I should do to make sure she can keep her UDP

Do you still have the Galaxy Nexus? If so, give it to her and have her get a SIM card from a Verizon store for it and activate it. Then she now has a 4g/LTE SIM card that is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S5.

and once she does that I can just replace that SIM card and put it in the S5? all in the same day?

EDIT: also will i lose any of my pictures, videos, or app data that is on my old phone? (galaxy nexus)

Would this same method work with Amazon?

Not in the same day...you would need to activate the galaxy nexus first before doing the upgrade to be on the safe side

Your data would not be lost

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I took the plunge and ordered through Best Buy today. I read this entire thread. I hope it all goes well. Here's my (hopefully short) story. I early adopted the Thunderbolt the day it released and have not made an official upgrade since. My Thunderbolt was plagued with problems and Verizon ended up sending me a refurb Rezound. I've been going through my family's hand-me-downs, a Galaxy Nexus which I loved but awful battery life, and my now current Razr Maxx. It's a shame we have to go to these lengths because I truly need the unlimited, I live in a rural area where I use my phone for 4G internet most of the time. Money is tight, this Razr Maxx is getting very sluggish (been on stock, safestrapped, rooted, rommed), and I'm pretty much stuck on Verizon based on coverage and my old, company discounted, legacy plan. I went for the $1 plus free shipping LG G2. It was a difficult choice between that and the Moto X. So, thanks everyone, I'll report back.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hello I wanted to order a black s5 but its back orderd. would this trick still work when the phone ships??

also on a different note. on our family plan we got 3 unlimted internet and 1 phone which doesn't. cant I upgrade on that line then switch the phone to my line and then reactivate the old phone on that line?

The trick should still work. I'm assuming it's backordered because it may be in high demand, not because they're trying to find a fix.

As for your other question can you elaborate more on what you mean? am a little confused by how it is worded

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I don't think this will work because that line did not have UDP to begin with, someone correct me if i'm wrong

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Tried the Best Buy way to get a Galaxy S5. When I get to the Verification for an upgrade I enter my info and password. The response I get is: "
Looks like your Verizon account is password protected. Please enter your Verizon account password below to continue". I do it again and I get the same response. I went to verizon.net and logged in using the password I used on the Best Buy site and I was logged onto my account. Went back to the tab in my browser and tried to log in again and got the same response. Tried Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers. Seems like Verizon has found a way to block this UDP go around. Anyone else have this problem? Tried it at 6:30 am on 23 April 2014.

You need to use your account PIN not your account password. If you don't know your PIN you might need to call VZW customer support and request a new one. It isn't very intuitive because the BB page says "password" not "PIN" but if you chat with BB suport they give you this answer. Source, I went through this yesterday when I bought my UPD upgraded HTC one!

Would this same method work with Amazon?

Also, Amazon does not have this loophole.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Thanks to OP and all the contributors to this awesome thread!!

I just ordered TWO HTC ONE M8 UPGRADES from Best Buy.
They are on sale for $150.00!

The order process went smooth as so many have described.
(The gunmetal color is back ordered about 1-2 weeks)
So far no change to my account on Verizon, but I'll check again later. I am expecting to see my plans extended 2 years with no change, keeping my 2 UDPs.

Also ordered a sim card cutter from Amazon to modify my Droid Razr Maxx sims.

Thank you all !!

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I ordered my Galaxy S5 on the BB site on Saturday. I took screen prints of all my transactions that state no changes in data plan. The phone came UPS today. (I tried to get UPS to hold it at their distribution center and BB has a block on that. Someone has to be at the address to sign for it. UPS will make 3 attempts and then hold it at distribution site for 5 days before returning to BB, per UPS rep.)

Opened up the box, batter was not installed, opened the unit and pulled the sim card out. It was very tight, had to pull it with some hemostats. Compared it to the sim card in my Thunderbolt, sadly it is much smaller, but like everyone said, the metal part is exactly the same.

I'm afraid to cut the sim card. What if I mess it up, will Verizon give me a new one for my T-Bolt? I'm going to Radio Shack or Walmart before work and see if they have one of those adapter kits before I go hacking this thing. I also don't have a screen protector or case for the S5 so I don't want it banging around in my pocket all night unprotected.

I haven't turned on the S5. After I cut the sim card, I just put it in the S5 and turn it on? Verizon site still shows my old phone and unlimited data, but has had contract date of 4/20/2016, two years from the day I ordered the phone.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Correct. Insert the cut sim and power on the phone. Your data plan will be unchanged.
