[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Asking again in this thread, as apparently I can't ask about switching upgrades on lines in the other one.

I'm getting confused between the VZW upgrade switching and the BB.com ordering and want to be sure I do this correctly. Can y'all help, please?

I have a Galaxy Nexus with UDP (no upgrade right now). My dad has a flip phone and an upgrade. I want to upgrade to an M8 and give him my Galaxy Nexus.

So, I think I order the M8 from Best Buy using his phone number, shipping to my house. Before it arrives, I would have to cut my SIM card down. Then once it arrives I put my Nexus SIM card into it and turn it on. Then I give my Nexus to my dad, have him take it in and activate it on his line. Is that right or am I totally confused?

That is correct.

That was definitely not the way to go. I would even think your plan has already changed on the Verizon site. And you don't have to call or at least with the BB instructions all you had to do is insert your existing sim card, once it boots up you get a Verizon screen for a few minutes then after that the screen says "this sim card has already been activated". Along with your number displayed on the screen and 4G pops up. You may be SOL!

wellllll chit.

My Verizon still shows unlimited data for my line, but they have my signed receipt in my documents showing 6GB @ $30. I guess I'm SOL? Should I even bother using the old GNEX sim, or just use the SIM that comes with the GS5?

thanks again for the help. forums are so useful

PS: i'm confused how you order a phone on contract at BB without selecting a new data plan? I would think that's part of the process. Do you pay the 2 year contract rate, or full price?

You have to cancel your order before you get the phone and then start over using the BB method if you want to keep your unlimited.

Don't understand what part you are confused about using the BB website. From the very first thread until this page it is mentioned over and over. You don't select a new plan you just select keep current plan. It's called a loop hole, it really shouldn't be there but right now it is.

That is correct but since he has a flip phone I'm assuming he has a dumb line. You will probably be prompt to select a new data plan which in your case probably the 30 dollar 2gb. This will go on his line not yours. Once you receive the new phone do as you stated. Use you sim card etc.

You actually don't even need to do the BB trick as you will have to upgrade you dad's line to a data plan anyways. If I'm not mistaken since you would be ordering a smart phone on a dumb line (non data) it will prompt you to elect a data plan.

Now you can transfer his upgrade. I will send you here for that:

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK, I've taken the plunge and ordered a Galaxy S5 using an upgrade on a 2GB data plan line. I chose in store pickup so I can get the phone faster. From what I understand, the process is this:

1. Order phone on non-UDP line (done)
2. Receive new phone and insert SIM card from old UPD phone.
3. Power up and active.

Is there anything I'm missing?

I think when transferring an upgrade you must activate the phone on the transferred line first, then move it to the UDP line.

I also believe if you pick up the device at store, they will activate the device before you leave.

Not necessary to activate on basic/measured line first but if pick up in store they may not give you choice.

Should I cancel the in-store order? Is that necessary? Thanks for all your help.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Anyone keeping up with my updates, this does still work. Received my LG G2 today and the SIM card pull was easy. Everything is great so far. Phone was recognized about an hour after I swapped SIMs on the Verizon website. Still UNLIMITED data. My mom also wants me to do this on her account. Total upgrade was $1.10 for the phone and $35 for the Verizon upgrade fee. The LG G2 is super quick. Great phone so far, but I have an urge to root. Thanks to everyone in this thread. Any questions, just ask.

Edit: I ordered my mom the same deal yesterday. I still think a $35 upgrade fee is ridiculous. Also, small piece of advice, if the phone's shipping UPS then head on over to UPS(dot)com and create a myUPS account. You can forgo a signature for your package at the door with an electronic 'signature' and even give specific instructions where to leave your package. I did this with mine since I wouldn't be home.

Whelp, i took the plunge. Checkout on BB.com went fine and everything said keep current plan. Took screenshots (though i don't know what they are for), so here's to hoping.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

just posting back up...
they changed my moms service to my old gnexus and provided a new 4g sim card and she kept her UDP
Same day i switched it to the new S5 we already had, boot it up, still has her UDP :) surprised that one went to well
seems the trick still works!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

This is where I am now:

Line 1: Unlimited, upgrade eligible, month-to-month HTC Droid Incredible
Line 2: Unlimited, upgrade eligible, m-t-m Motorola Droid X
Line 3: Basic phone, upgrade eligible, m-t-m

I want to upgrade lines 1 and 2, keep unlimited, and then cancel line 3. Doable?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You might be able to cancel line 3 since when you do this it updates the contracts on line 1 and 2.....

But it might not allow you to transfer the upgrade while you have an upgrade available on line 3.

You may want to cancel line 3 first then use the method in this thread. http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?t=351917

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I have a family shared plan with 2 lines on it, both with UPD, both up for renewal. I chose one line to move forward with, went through BB, keep my existing data plan, and got the phone delivered to my home.

I have yet to activate the phone. I placed a call to verizon and they confirm my UPD is still UPD for the phone I purchased. HOWEVER, they have the IMEI of the HTC M8 phone I just upgraded for and the rep told me (not sure if she's confused or things have changed) that their system knows the DEVICE I purchased and that as soon as I activate 'that device i.e. the HTC M8' the system will put me on a 2gb plan.

Am I being bull-****ted with? I know for a fact that they have the IMEI for the HTC M8 I upgraded for. I was going to go through with resizing the sim, putting it in the HTC m8, and taking the dive once I read this forum. But, I could REALLY use someones experience regarding the above -- is verizon right in that its the DEVICE and not the SIM? Because the premise of this thread is all about 'sim' swap.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Just remove the sim and insert your UDP sim. Turn on the phone and you're good to go.

So I have a regular sim in my s3 that I am cutting down... Go the width down but if I cut any more on the length end it will actually be cutting into the chip area... In short, the chip area for the original sim I have is larger than the chip area for the nano that the HTC came with. So my question is, can I actually cut into the chip area? If I don't, the sim is still too large to fit into the HTC's sim slot.

Is it a regular sim, or micro sim? I purchased a sim cutter to cut my micr sim to nano sim. It did remove a small portion of the chip (gold) area and works fine. I would suggest checking out some YouTube videos.

Were you able to get your UDP back after returning the one that did not work...? Or did they give you major grief... With my experience, I'm sure they did not want to give you back your UDP!
