[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

What's the best way to do a "screen shot"? Print screen then copy to a word document?

I'm thinking of getting the LG G2. My current phone (HTC Rezound) has a "standard" (mini) size sim. The LG G2 requires a micro sim. Would I be able to take it to a cell shop and have them cut it for me?

Yes to both questions

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Sorry if this has been asked, I'm trying to go through all 30 pages.

I just dropped my s3 and insurance wants 169 to replace it. Riiiiiight. So I searched and found this page.

I want to upgrade to the s5 and my main line is up for an upgrade (I added a line with no phone on it last time just to keep my UDP-I have family share not share everything)

I can take the sim out of the s5 and put it in the s3 with no functionality loss?

When call Verizon to activate it (since I will have it off when I try to do it automated and it will fail) when do I power it on with my old sim in it?!

I appreciate the help. I'm so scared to do this since I use 10 gb+ a month, but I need a new phone now that mine is shattered. (By the way, I just got a foxfi update....apparently wifi mode is working with kit kat now! Yay!) :)

So you will first transfer the upgrade to your add a line basic line and do the upgrade on their. Once you get the phone you will put your basic phone back on your added line you did the upgrade on (All of which can be done through my Verizon). Once the basic phone is on their just take your Sim out of the s3 put it into the s5 and you are all set (none of the part will need you to call my Verizon or put it into my Verizon at all as it will just activate the s5 automatic with the Sim card)

How you'll know that your regular line is being affected or not is when you are doing the upgrade you transfered on the basic line as it will tell you and warn you if it were to remove unlimited data. Also when you get the phone make sure that you activate the phone first on the basic line as if you try to activate the s5 you just got it will wipe out your unlimited data so do activate the phone first on the basic line and then do the swap as I said above.

Any questions feel free to ask!

My basic line has no phone on it, no SIM card. It exists only on my bill :)

I get the picture below when first adding the phone to the cart. Do I just ignore it?!

Yep...The next screen will show your UDP is still there.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Oh nice. Yes, line 3 (the basic line) does have an upgrade available. So, when I get the phone, how do i go about activating it on line 1? Can that be done online? Do I just call it in? Also, to get the basic phone back on line 3, do i do that right away? Thanks again!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hi All,

Thanks for the great tip! I finally ordered a Samsung S5 to replace my tired Motorola Razr Maxx, which I've held on to because of my UDP.

Quick question: When your new phone arrives, do you swap SIM cards and then call the activation line on a different line? Or do you simply swap the SIM cards and turn on your new phone?

Following the activation instructions, I kept both phones powered down and called the Verizon activation line. The rep immediately warned me that if I activated my phone, I would automatically lose my UDP. I repeatedly protested that I had 3 different documents (Best Buy Receipts) stating that my plan would have no change. I'm wondering if I made a mistake calling in, and should have just swapped SIMs and powered on. I politely declined to activate the phone at that point and said I would send the phone back to Best Buy.

Thoughts? Should I swap SIMs, power the phone on, and see what happens? Maybe roll the dice and go in to a store with my documents in hand? Thanks all.

My basic line shares my unlimited data and isn't due for an upgrade till 2015. Do you think that will have an effect?

Just do a little reading in this thread it's covered several times over. I even typed the steps out just a few pages back so people wouldn't have to go back and read every page.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So I have a regular sim in my s3 that I am cutting down... Go the width down but if I cut any more on the length end it will actually be cutting into the chip area... In short, the chip area for the original sim I have is larger than the chip area for the nano that the HTC came with. So my question is, can I actually cut into the chip area? If I don't, the sim is still too large to fit into the HTC's sim slot.

No you should not be cutting into the gold areas of the sim when trimming a micro to a nano. If you are then you're doing it wrong! I just did the same thing with my micro sim from my S3. No gold areas were touched.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I did it. Pulled the trigger. So friggen nervous! Gonna pop the s3 sim into to s5 and power on. If all goes wrong, I think I have 14 days to negate the contract and return. Here's to hoping!!!!! Thanks everyone. I'll def keep you all updated.

And I took a screenshot of everything!!!!!!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Verizon disabled the hotspot fro people with unlimited data in android version 4.3. That is why I still sit on 4.1.2 on my S3. I haven't updated it. Pretty sure what they are doing is illegal since the FCC claimed they could not charge additional. Sure there is fine print to cover there *** against the remaining UDP peeps. I'm hoping the apps used to get the hotspot continue to be updated. Unfortunately the one I use doesn't work on my M8. Fingers crossed for an update.

Foxfi just sent an update to my phone yesterday that said wifi mode is now compatible with kit kat! Hope it works for you!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hello to all.

Good thread. Promising results for most. I applaud all that have tried and have successfully gotten their upgrade without losing their UDP. Good luck to those who are in between points.

After lurking this thread for a month or so, I decided to give it a whirl. Hesitant still about losing my UDP, I decided to guinnea pig by wife's line (she doesn't burn data like I do) and see how things go.

We both have Galaxy Nexus phones. I successfully placed an order on the BB site (no errors during processing and checkout) using "most" of the instructions detailed in this thread (explanation to follow).

Shortly after checkout out and placing the order, I get an email saying that there is a problem with my mobile order and that I need to call BB and refer to my open case number to have it rectified so that they can complete my order.

Of course, I don't call as I rather not chance the idea of human intervention deviating off the listed method and causing a change in my account.

What happens in the course of the last 8 days are daily emails, telling me to call. Daily phone calls, telling me to call. On just ONE occasion, my son hands me the phone and it was a BB rep. She was nice. She stated that they just needed to confirm my order with Verizon and that I needed to give her my last 4 SS number of the primary and/or my VZW pin/passcode to access my account. I gave her some line that I was in the middle of something and that I would call her back. She acknowledged and we ended the call.

So during this week, I retraced my steps to see if I did something wrong during the order. The ONE thing that deviated from the plan that I noticed was that on my BB account, I have the default shipping address set up to send orders from BB to my office. After reviewing the thread, I can speculate that there may have been as issue with the order NOT being designated to ship to my billing address and that may have created a flag in their system. Theory #1.

Another possibility was the plan that I am on. My wife and I are on an old Family Share 1000 plan with unlimited data. I am the primary. Again, I tried to upgrade her line/phone. Despite choosing to "keep existing plan" on the order, perhaps the system did not want to agree with my old legacy Family Share plan? This is theory #2.

So, fast forward to today. Finally after 8 days of calling and emails, BB finally canceled my order today. Daily checks of my VZW account shows no change to my phones and/or UDP.

My question is...should I wait a day or two and retry to order again? This time being vigilent about synchronizing the ship to address with my billing?

I have also read a post stating that a user successfully upgraded his wife's secondary line on a share plan but unsuccessfully upgrading his. I'd hate to be in that scenario as well.

Anyways, this is my contribution to the story. I'll chew on what my next step will be. For my wife's upgrade, it was to move from her Galaxy Nexus to a LG G2.

Thanks.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I would guess it is the ship to issue. I would try again.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I decided to give this a try and it worked exactly as described. I did do one thing different, I didn't have it shipped to my billing address. This didn't complicate things though and didn't receive any calls or emails from BB.

Good luck everyone!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Worked GREAT!!!! My new Galaxy S5 arrived yesterday and just took out the SIM that came in the phone & added my OLD SIM from my Droid Razr Maxx & it worked perfectly!!!

Thanks again to all!!!! Now, hopefully this will still work when the Note 4 is released... ;-)

I haven't had any luck getting my order processed either. If you call the automated hotline and ask about order status you'll probably get a message about pre-activation failed. As far as billing/shipping addresses go (mine didn't match the first time either), I don't think it matters as I matched the addresses for a 2nd order attempt and the order still would not process.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Has anybody done this and then Verizon changes your plan after a month or two or are you in the clear as long as you use your sim from your unlimited sim?

Thanks

As long as you follow the steps correctly Verizon won't come back and change your plan randomly.

So add me to the list of people who are going for it!
I just put an order in for an HTC M8......I'll update once I've got the phone.

Yes I recommend doing it online and avoid talking to Verizon CSR's especially retail store ones who might try to dissuade you. If your old phone on line one uses a nano SIM like an iPhone you can just put it in the M8 when it arrives. If SIM is not compatible you go online, and follow the process to activate the phone on your UDP line. There will be a pending activation on the basic line just ignore it and it will fall off in about a week. You won't be charged data on the basic line because you never activated a smartphone on the data line. And since you never took the basic phone off no need to put it back on.
