[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Update

Best Buy will not ship the G3 to your home...ever. Although the rep initially said it was due to lack of adequate stock at the warehouse, today, reps commented that it is now policy that all Verizon cells be activated in the store. It has nothing to do with stock availability. It's almost impossible to swap out the SIM card at the store prior to phone activation. So the only way to keep UDP is to use a dummy line.

For myself, I ended up using Verizon Max since I never go beyond 3GB/month, and opening 2 additional dummy lines to upgrade mine and my wife's phone will be more expensive. To us, it didn't make sense to keep the UDPs. Good luck to the rest of you!

How does that make any sense? reps smdh. what a doozy

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Is the alternate upgrade via best buy the same as with verizon.com?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello I currently have an iPhone 4 with an UDP but would like to upgrade to the HTC One M8 by transferring my upgrade to a tiered data line. However my iPhone does not have a SIM card and I was told I need to have a phone that requires a SIM card to request a new one. This means I can't just put my SIM card in the HTC when it arrives because I do not have one. How can I go about this without losing my UDP?

A person in another thread that best buy won't ship out Orders anymore. It has to be in store activated. Make much sense?

Not really sure that is accurate, after reading that post I added a phone other than the G3 (Samsung S5) and it gave me the option to ship. I didn't finish the process because I'm not interested in getting a S5.

Edit... It appears the G3 and iPhones are the only phones that say shipping not available.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I am about to purchase the verizon HTC M8, I wanted to do it through the HTC website (what can i say i'm a sucker for free shipping). I thought this would work fine because it is powered by best buy however when I say keep plan same before i get to checkout it says that it needs to do a credit check, kinda like i am signing up for a new line or new service.

Anybody know why it does this through HTC's website and not through best buy?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I am glad this is still working for everyone. I still have my UDP, I will assume that once everything upgrades to XLTE that we won't be part of that but that is okay. I would rather stay with 4g and have unlimited than XLTE and have a cap.

We already get xlte!

Borrow a phone from another line that is LTE? Purchase a SIM card from eBay? I wouldn't take it to the store after you transfer the upgrade.

You also maybe able to reuse the SIM card after the old phone is activated on the tiered line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does the same best buy method work when ordering via verizon.com?

And does the dummy line have to be the primary line to do the alternate upgrade?

I haven't heard of anyone trying the Best Buy method on a phone ordered from Verizon. Dummy line doesn't have the be the primary line. Mine isn't. I have 5 lines, 4 UDP and one basic phone for in-laws. Run all my upgrades through the basic phone. Nice thing about the just putting the SIM in from the UDP phone is that it doesn't disrupt service for the basic phone which for me is good because the in-laws live 30 miles away and I don't need to activate / reactivate the phone. Every time there is an upgrade on one of the UDP lines I just transfer the upgrade to the basic phone and order a new phone which is shipped to me. I take the new phone put my SIM in and I'm done.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I returned my LG G2 to BestBuy, they returned the device and reversed the upgrade. Everything was looking good, but I kept checking the line it was still showing 2gb data. So, today I call in to get the old phone activated back on the line, but before I let the rep go I asked him is everything back to way it was before. He goes yup, but than adds that it shows 2gb data plan was that how it was? Of course not and he asked me what was the reason I returned the phone? Than asked if keeping UDP important for me? I said yes(duh in my head). He filled out a form to get the udp reinstated and said it will take 24-48hrs and most likely will get reinstated.

Can anyone else share how you got your udp back once you returned your phone to BB?

otwok congrats on this post/posting as its still going strong and has helped many upgrade and save hundreds!

I'd like to inform you that we all have access to Xlte, you just need to have a capable device and be in one of the few cities that has xlte service. Hopefully they expand xlte nationwide and soon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Has anyone done this/think this will work?
I have an acct with 3 UDP lines and 1 iphone line which gets only 250 mb data. Could I transfer the upgrade to my 250mb line, buy the G3, then put my UDP sim in there? Theoretically, it would work the same as the dumb-phone method, right?

Yes it would.

Does it matter if I were to order through Best Buy or Verizon for this? I can't do the BB ship-to-home method.
I had ordered the pre-order, but then received a phone call that they had to cancel it, or I had to pick up in store.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I can confirm that the Best Buy loophole is still working. I tried my best to order one in store and she refused to let me activate the phone myself. Telling me as I left that I would lose my unlimited data no matter how I upgraded my device. How wrong was she? Well I have had my s5 for 10 days now and still have my UDP.

Simple as using the Best Buy site and having the phone shipped directly to my home.

Once it arrived I was actually using a MotoX which I purchased earlier in the year to play with. However I still had my old sim from my Galaxy S3, so I used the online service to transfer the sim card back to the larger sized sim. It now shows my phone under billing as "Galaxy S3" so I'm not sure how insurance will work, but I still have my unlimited data and an extended 2 year contract.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Question:

If I have a dumb phone line (no data) and a UDP line, can I upgrade the dumbphone to a smartphone without ruining the UDP line?

Essentially, if I did what everyone is doing here (used the upgrade on the dumbphone) but actually activated it ON the dumbphone. Will the two lines remain separate? Thanks

That will be fine. You will just have to go to tiered data on the dumb line. Unlimited line will not be affected.

You're using an s5 on the line but it's still showing an s3?

This doesn't seem to make any sense, at least as it applies to all VZW phones. A quick review of the BB website seems to indicate that phones such as the SGS5 seems to indicate that shipping to home is still available. I did not go through all the steps though. Nonetheless, the lack of shipping on the G3 is strange. I myself went to best buy on Thursday to inquire about it and was given the line about the G3 having to be activated in store. Not sure what to make of the situation.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Anyone have any thoughts on this situation:

700 minute family plan, I forget the specific name but you know what I am talking about.

Line 1: UDP -- Month to Month
Line 2: UDP -- Contract up in 2 years as upgraded using BB method about 3-5 weeks ago.

if the BB method not available for G3, I consider adding a new phone line from VZW directly.

Based on what I think I read, I can add a third line and try the Dumbphone transfer method. (If I am wrong please say something!)

However, can I add the third line directly as the G3, then activate, then activate a non-data phone on this third line?,

OR

must iI first add a third line with the old non data phone, THEN upgrade?

I ask this because I think if I do it Dumb, then G3, Then Dumb, I get charged 2 activation charges instead of just one if I go direct to G3.

Has anyone here done this by
1. Adding a new line to a family plan, and
2. Used one of the two alternatives described (direct to smart, then dumb vs dumb-smart-dumb)

Thanks in advance.
