[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Scarrz I think you will be fine either way… Now what are all of your thoughts on this…

This is what I want to do:

Line 1 UDP
Line 2 TDP
Line 3 Basic phone

Transferred upgrade from Line 3 to Line 2 TDP, currently waiting for phone which is preordered (iPhone 6 plus). Once received activate the new iPhone 6 on Line 2 TDP with the Verizon Sim that they include. After about 36-48 hours swap the old smart phone that was on Line 2 (iPhone 5s) back to Line 2 and activate iPhone 6 plus on Line 1 UDP. Will I be able to keep my UDP?? Since I transferred my upgrade from Line 3 basic line to a line already with a TDP I don't think I am forced to keep a data plan on the basic line, just Line 2 which has the TDP.

According to the new rules if you use the transfer from from a basic phone to upgrade to a smart phone that line will get stuck with the 2GB data plan.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 2 line one is UDP and other is basic phone. Since english is my second language I didnt understand about bb method. Im trying to get lg g3 let me know what am I suppose to do

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Also my girlfriend has single line with UDP she could also do bb method on her line?

Upgrade and keep UDP

My scenario:

Phone A (Me)
Unlimited data - eligible for upgrade

Phone B (Wife)
Tiered - Not eligible until next year

Phone C
Business Phone - Not a smartphone

Phone D (Boss's Wife)
Tiered - eligible for upgrade

Phone E (Boss)
Unlimited - eligible for upgrade

Can I transfer the upgrade from A to B and upgrade on the already tiered plan, then switch the phone to my line after I get it?

or

Should I upgrade on my boss's wife's line so I am not transferring upgrades? Then switch the phone to my line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What is the best buy method?

i think you go on bestbuy .com order your phone click the no change in plan then have the phone sent to your house not to the store then when you ge the phone dont use the sim card its shipped with use the sim from your old phone because the new sim will have the tdp attachted to it but your old one will have the udp on it and you clicked the no plan change option when you ordered you should keep the udp not not 100% sure thats how it works but thats the jist of it lol

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

That's pretty much how the Best Buy method works.

1. Order phone from Best Buy. Make sure to "Keep existing plan". Ignore warning that you will lose UDP.
2. Have the phone shipped to your home.
3. When phone is received, do not power on the phone...remove SIM that came with the phone, and replace it with you current SIM.

That's it really. Check your Verizon account through the process to make sure your contract has been extended 2 years and that you maintain UDP.

A few things to keep in mind:
  • You must have the phone shipped to your home. You cannot pick it up in the store.
  • Do not talk to Best Buy or Verizon on the phone. If there is a problem with your order, cancel it and try again.
  • You may need to cut your SIM down or use an adapter if your SIM a different size.
  • This method also works through Amazon and Cotsco, the only difference is that you will have to choose a 2gb plan instead of the Keep existing plan that Best Buy has.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Pre-orders for phones are almost always in store only Prometheus

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I believe the rule only applies if you upgrade the basic line to a smart phone and then try to drop the data plan. Since I plan to transfer the upgrade from the basic line to a line with a TDP, and then switching the device to a line that has a UDP, the TDP line is not actually dropping its data plan because I will still keep a smart phone on the TDP line.

There have been a few reports of folks successfully doing just that here and on the MacRumors forums. That's exactly what I plan to do, as soon as I can locate a 6 :)

I think is more about using a basic phone line to get a discount on a smart phone then just trying to stop upgrading a UDP line. If that was truly the soul reason they would close all loop holes.

But by all means give it a try and than let us all know how it worked out.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Has anyone added a new UDP line and successfully swapped their numbers?

I have a UDP line that is month to month. I was able to add a new UDP line through Apple. I picked up the iP6 in the store but I haven't opened it for fear that I won't be able to swap my phone# from my old UDP to the new UDP. Any suggestions? (my old UDP has a iP 4s, so no 4G card to work with for swapping sims)

Where you able to do it? What are the steps if you did? Thanks

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just a heads up to everyone. I went through BB and everything worked as said in the thread. Ordered a new G3. Tossed the sim that came with the phone. Got it put old sim in powered up all is fine. Account showed UD and contract 2 years. All was well. Was having some issues with old sim. Ordered a new sim from Verizon. Got that delivered. Went to activate the new sim from Verizon and bam. UD gone. This happened on day 14 after the purchase. Called Verizon. They said that it was jacked up in the system. Their system used the sim ID from the BB sim that I tossed out when I went to activate the new sim. Left me without an activated sim. When I got that worked out they said UD was gone. they confirmed that even though there was no change in my plan by using the old sim that since there was a contract extension made they could not get UD back on. Got approval from corporate level at Verizon to reinstate my UD, but had to return phone to BB. Went to BB and by this time it was now day 15. Required management at BB to override system to allow to return one day after return period. Since it was one day out of return period it did not trickle to Verizon to show that the device was returned. So BB had to get on phone with Verizon. Get up to management and tech support to file a claim to have UD returned to my line. Supposed to happen within next couple days. Right now Verizon showing that I am 32 gig outside of my plan. Just a caution to those that do this and then down the road you need help from Verizon.

In theory I could wait for all this to wash out and do same process over. Instead I am going to play safe. Buy from Swappa and move along. UD is something that I just can't go without. Sure the throttle is about to start, but I live in middle of nowhere FL, so not worried to much about "stressed" towers. Take away is if you ever need help on your account once you do this there could be a chance that they remove your UD at anytime. I got lucky and was one day out of return period and was able to get the right approvals. If I was past that or say a month from now. No luck.. So be careful guys. Good luck to all of you.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Was having some issues with old sim.

First of all, thanks for the detailed write up of your experience.

What issues were you seeing? I had planned on doing exactly what you did to get a Note 4 on my unlimited line. Now I'm having second thoughts.

Signal issues. I didn't cut or shave my old sim. It was just worn out from using in my S3 for past couple years. So reading through this thread I saw where others have had success. Went and ordered one online. Looking back I am thinking that it could have been worked out had I gone to a store to activate. I put the new sim (not the BB sim) in the phone. Needed to activate. I followed the directions that came with the new sim. When prompted I wanted to activate that new sim on the phone it went into an auto activate instead of feeding me to a rep. I can only think that the system picked up the BB sim number that was in limbo on my account from when I did the swap originally. Immediately after I did it a random sim number showed up on my account. It was not my original sim and not the new sim. Can't confirm it was the BB sim because I chopped that up and threw away when I got it with the phone. Thinking that if you do get a new sim that you ensure you talk to someone with Verizon to manually put that new sim number in and it might work. Can't say for sure. They might see the extension of contract and boot your UD. So.. i'm going the legit way and just buying full out.. This scare was to close to call for me.. Best of luck :)

Yes, that makes sense. It seems like there are two related *danger* points in what you did.

1. Best Buy Method fallout -- now a new unused sim is associated with your UDP line. How long does this bad sim stick with your line? How can you drop it or tell if it is still associated with your line?
2. Getting a new sim from VZW. In general this is very dangerous. Whether on purpose or accident, VZW employees have been known to kick UD off lines when getting new sim, even though it is not necessary. Add onto that the fact that from #1 above there is a bad "UD killing" sim associated with the line, the chances of the new sim causing issues becomes almost certain.

As far as #1 above, people have been doing the Best Buy method for quite some time. I hope people chime in here regarding sim status issues or non-issues.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So is Best Buy shipping iphones now? I am getting ready to take the plunge. Thanks

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey Folks,

So I did the old transfer my UDP Upgrade to the TDP Line and purchased a Subsidized iPhone 6. I should be receiving it next week.

Once I get it, why don't I just activate it on the TDP line, then deactivate it and then reactivate the phone already on my TDP line and then Activate the iPhone 6 on the UDP Line...

I don't understand why I need to mess with the Sim Card at all. . . did I miss that somewhere in this thread??
