[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Still fine here... Ordered my phone in mid-October, threw away the SIM and used my existing one. My billing cycle started again on 11/10 and I still have unlimited.

Which method did you use? Has the pending activation cleared from your account?

Yes I know I am wrong but I thought that was the first step so I'm asking you what is the first step? I'm not being a wise guy and this entire discussion may be moot now but I want to understand. The reason is I would prefer to do the entire process in vzw if it works, extends udp, and allows me to buy a subsidized phone. Is there a "VZW Method" thread to explain this? I am not being contentious. I know virtually nothing about this and I acknowledge that. I just want to understand. At first people seemed to contest what you said then they agreed so I am utterly lost.

Apparently the BB method is in doubt now so maybe this "VZW method" works?

Best Buy Method: http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon/444741-unlimited-data-faq-upgrades-new-lines.html

Upgrade with one unlimited line (Best Buy Method)
1. Order from Best Buy or other third party retailer and have it SHIPPED to your house. You may see a note that you will lose unlimited and it may require you to select a tiered data plan. This is okay.
2. If Best Buy contacts you about the order and tells you to call them, cancel the order immediately and check to make sure your Verizon account is in good standing. Then you can re-order, or try to order from another 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] party retailer.
3. DO NOT TURN ON THE NEW PHONE. Remove the sim from the existing phone and place it in the new phone, and turn it on.

Line Transfers with Verizon: http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...-udp-line-avoid-20-out-contract-increase.html

TRANSFER YOUR UPGRADE

With a UDP line out of contract, you are eligible to get upgrade pricing with a 2-year contract renewal. However, if you upgrade on your UDP line, you will have to select a new tiered data plan.

If you have other non-UDP lines on your account, you can transfer the upgrade to one of those lines. When you use the upgrade on one of those lines, it renews the contract of the UDP line. You can do this in-store but IMO it is safer to do this yourself online at Verizon Wireless. Verizon posts instructions on an FAQ here.

Buy a new phone using the Upgrade Discount and activate it on the non-UDP line. You may want to use it in the device for about an hour. Then, simply swap the new SIM back to the previous device. Feel free to use the new device on the UDP line or sell it. (Or just use the new device on the non-UDP line).

Example:
Line 1: UDP with UPGRADE AVAILABLE (possibly also out of contract)
Line 2: TDP no UPGRADE AVAILABLE (currently on-contract)

Transfer upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2. Buy new phone with Line 2's new available upgrade. Activate phone (on Line 2, new SIM usually provided). Line 1 goes back onto a 2-year contract. Line 2's contract/upgrade date is unaffected.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

PSA: I successfully used the BB method to purchase a Galaxy Note 5 for $350 on Nov 4 to keep my UDP at the old price for two years. Yesterday an Android app that I hadn't used for a while (slice) notified me of a sale on the Note 5 for $150. The program suggested I apply for a refund of the $200 and it even wrote the email request for me. Within two hours Best Buy said no, but this morning I received an email telling me I was getting a $219 credit on my account. Before anyone says anything, I checked my Verizon account and UDP is safe until 11/4/2017 at the same rate.

In the denial email, the csa said that I was not eligible for a price adjustment because the phone was under contract with Verizon. But I'm betting someone else reviewed the request and recognized that was BS and that I had a valid request. I want to point out that I am a reward zone member and I have an extended return period of 45 days, so I'm sure that has a bearing on the adjustment. Standard return on BB purchases is 14 days, and for reward zone members it's between 30-45 days.

So check your receipts and check for any current sale prices. You could be eligible for an early Christmas present like me...

Where do I check to see if there is a pending activation? When I go to Activate or Switch Device on Verizons website it just has pictures of all my phones.

That is where it would show. If you click on the phone that represents the line you used to upgrade from a new window will open and show whether you have a pending or completed activation. If pending you likely still have your UDP. If completed you have likely lost UDP. Obviously you shouldn't fiddle with anything on that screen.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Speculation is that the IMEI is tied to the switch order. When you used the SIM from your UDP line (the line from which you placed the upgrade order) within the phone last night (subsequent to Verizon's system change) and turned it on for the first time you sent an activation request that was immediately completed and you were kicked off of your UDP.

If you are still within the window of your 14 day buyer's remorse period:

1) You MUST return the phone to Best Buy (or wherever you bought it) and get your upgrade restored and contract reversed; and
2) You MUST file an inactive pricing request (IPR) thru Verizon.

This should get you your UDP back at the newly increased cost of course.

Follow the thread over on Slickdeals for more info as it is gathered.

Any idea how and why this happened? Do you have a link for the Slickdeals thread?

Got it thanks, I think that they are banning those SIMs from their network now since your new phone comes with a new SIM...

I suppose that's a possibility. I "activated" with my UDP SIM a few days before the deadline and then returned that SIM to it's previous device. The subsidized device had been unused until the night before the deadline when I tested the device with a SIM from another carrier and it worked flawlessly. The insane side of me wants to use that non Verizon SIM again and see if it somehow affects my account. That would at least tell us whether the phones can be sold. The reasonable side of me however keeps telling me to let someone else cross that bridge LOL.

Ok, just got the S6 today, have not activated it, removed sim. Have been reading people have lost udp when activating phone after 11/15 even when using old sim. Can anyone verify this, if so the phone goes back to bb and we pay the increased line fee. I'm currently afraid to activate phone with old sim fearing loss of udp, has anyone done this today and not lost the unlimited data?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was able to use the Best Buy method successfully and this is how I did it. Read the account of my story here. Still unlimited until 11/10/2017.
The Android Anthem: PSA: Verizon Unlimited Data Customers: Here's How to Save $444 over the next 2 Years

This is how many of us did it. A fair amount of us however have kept the phones and utilized them or planned to at some point. These are the ones who seem to be losing their UDP's. It would be helpful to know how long it has been since you sold the phone, and if the person to whom you sold the phone to has activated it on a Verizon or other account.

If you used the BB Method and used the available upgrade from your UDP line to make your purchase, do NOT use the SIM from that line to activate the phone. You will lose your UDP. If you have another line available on your account that was ineligible for an upgrade, for example a TDP line and used the 4ever Method I don't believe there have been any reports yet of someone having lost their UDP. I would wait a few days however for further reports to come in. Follow the thread on Slickdeals.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have been following the other sites, what is the 4evermethod? I could activate phone on my line with 6gig data with the sim sent with phone, however, I am afraid to move it to the unlimited data line later. Since the phone was ordered with bb method on udp line and no transfer of upgrade was done can I activate on my 6 gig line without affecting the udp? The udp line stays the contract expires on 11/13/17. What if I never activate the phone on udp line, activate on 6gig line and then sell it, is that possible?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

ok, don't have another line available that isn't eligible for upgrade, looks like the only option is to return phone without activating. I'm not ready to give up udp yet, but that is not to say we won't if some other carrier get the coverage Verizon has and offers attractive data plans to new customers.

You do not want to use the SIM that was sent with the phone. Remove it before you turn on the device and destroy it. You also do not want to use the SIM from from your UDP line as the IMEI from the new device is now identified with the line that your UDP SIM is attached to. The minute you turn on the device with that SIM the activation will complete and you will lose your UDP.

As of now it appears that you may be safe if you "activate" the new device with the SIM from your 6GB line. There are a few folks over on Slickdeals that are allegedly going to try this sometime today. I would follow the thread over there before testing this for yourself. In any case attempting to then transfer that device over to your unlimited line will cause the loss of your UDP. Consider the entire device at this point, rather than just the SIM that shipped with it to be toxic to your UDP.

Long story short; you cannot use the new device on your unlimited line if the upgrade used to purchase it came from that line. No clue at this point if the the same situation will exist once the pending activation rolls off of the line.

The other line does not need to be eligible for an upgrade to throw the SIM from that device into the newly subsidized one. I could purchase the phone from you, put my SIM into it and it would be fine. The question is, will putting the SIM from your other line into the subsidized device in order to "activate" it affect your UDP? That is one of the questions everyone is waiting on over at Slickdeals.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Boy, I appreciate all the input regarding this situation. I am following the other threads, but if this S6 can't be used on the udp line I will return it, UNLESS it can be activated on 6g line and then sold to someone that actually wants the phone. I do not want a carrier phone myself, the motivation was to keep the udp price at $30 for two more years. Waiting a couple days to see how this shakes out for others is ok, but by Thursday I make a decision because we leave for vacation and I don't want this hanging over my head and exceed the 14 day return period because I don't want this phone on my line for 2 years!
