[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just need some help here..

Line 1: ip6s UDP eligible CED 11/11/16, BCED 22nd of the month
Line 2: ip6s UDP not eligible
Line 3: ip4s UDP not eligible

My main concern is not getting hit with the $20 price hike for UDP on L1. From what I'm reading, I can still upgrade L1 now to extend my contract as long as I get the phone before my BCED ends?

As far as upgrading L1 without losing UDP, i can order an iphone from BB, destroy the sim upon receipt, either activate it on L2 Or maybe resell the phone (destroying the sim) without activating? Not sure which one is better or if there are any proven methods. Appreciate it..
Either should work. The phone can never go back on line 1. It is probably safer to just sell it and never have ot on your account.

I recently did Snkydvl (transferring unlimited to a basic) and used the line on 2nd unlimited line. I have not had any issues. Although the original line stills says upgrade is available but the contract was extended.

Thanks bud.. Just didn't know if selling without activating the new phone is safe. Not sure if Vz has to see it activated somewhere in your account since there will be a pending activation. But from what I'm reading the PA should drop off eventually. Do vz iphones work with any other carrier when its not activated?

Yes they are unlocked and will work on carrier that the phone has the band for. The only current issue is if you get an iPhone from best buy it so be locked to whatever carrier it is activated on.

The pending update drops after a month or two.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You should be OK. Just never put the phone on the line in which the upgrade originated

Hi!

I have two lines.

Line 1 has UDP and contract ends 11/22
Line 2 is a basic phone still under contract.

On 11/23, I plan to use Verizon's website and transfer L1 upgrade to L3 and order the iPhone SE 64gb. When the phone arrives, I'll cut up the SIM before turning the phone on. Then I plan to only use that Verizon iPhone SE with a Cricket prepaid SIM card.

Quick questions about what I'm doing:

(1) will the Verizon iPhone SE work on Cricket and pick up their 4G bands?(which I assume is AT&T)

(2) will my Line 1 avoid the dreaded UDP $20 price increase?(since I renewed its contract the day after the current one ended)

(3) will my basic line be hit with the $30 data plan if it continues to have a basic phone on it?

Thank you!

I have no idea about #1

#2 you should be able to upgrade before the 22nd. Check on the 17th or 18th and you should be able to upgrade.

#3 as long as you don't activate the phone on line 2 you should avoid the charge.

Thanks! I guess I should have asked #1 over on iMore.com instead. :)

Line 1 started showing "upgrade eligible" two days ago, but it's only for upgrade via device payment plan. (but somehow Verizon's website made it look like I had won the lottery or something! :D ) I'll wait a few more days to see if the 2-year contract upgrade shows up... if not I can just do it on 11/23.(day after contract ends)

Yes the Verizon iphone se will work on cricket as it is unlocked and has the bands that cricket uses.

Are you using a computer or a tablet/phone to do the upgrade? I have noticed on my tablet/phone when I tried I couldn't find the box to change it to a 2 year contract. But on a computer I found it. If you have an upgrade available then you sound be able to do the 2 year upgrade. I can't remember which screen it was on, I think the screen with all the phones listed to choice from, the kids a box towards the top and you pick either retail, payment plan, or 2 year price.

Reporting BB-and-sell success

Reporting success using the BB-and-sell method.

Upgraded phone shipped on 10/12/16.
Today, 11/16/16, 35 days later, my Pending Upgrade is no longer showing on Verizon Wireless. Plan still shows $29.99 UDP, with a contract end date of 10/11/2018.

This was a simple, one-line UDP. Bought a Moto Z Force from Best Buy online using my available upgrade (available since Feb. 2013, I think), had it shipped to home, took out the SIM before turning on the phone, put the phone on Swappa as new at a low price ($500) and it sold in about an hour. Buyer was happy and asked if I had three more. That sale cleared about $460 after Swappa and PayPal took their cuts. Totals: $460 - $330 (phone + fast shipping) + $150 gift card = $280 profit. The money was just a bonus, since I got what I was really after: retained UDP, and at the $29.99 price.

Thanks especially to the very helpful dpham00, tx_tuff, and Mr. Toad (I think you helped me on reddit)

Wow! You were absolutely right on the money! :) Today is the 17th and I just checked my Verizon account. Line 1 is now showing upgrade eligible for the 2-year contract pricing. It wasn't yesterday. :)

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

if I extend my $29.99 UDP line's contract by 2 years in order to avoid the $20 increase,
what are the chances that VZW will put the $20 increase on the line anyway in a few months?

Has this scenario happened to anyone yet?

Thanks!

I don't think anyone had the $20 UDP increase added while on-contract.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am interested in the answer to the OP question also. What he is asking if if he doesn't actually go off contract but renews his contract for another two years (without actually being out of contract even one day) will the $29.99 UDP still stand for another two years. I am assuming that you can be eligible for a upgrade a few days before your contract ends and can act then.

Verizon is starting to resemble the Wicked Witch of the West... eventually she'll get around to everybody... :(

Whenever I think of Verizon, I think of the Wicked Witch of the West: :( My UDP is as precious as those ruby slippers. :)

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

do I have to shoot through hoops to keep UDP or can I just order a payment data plan?

just a single line by myself with unlimited data. I'm confused because I tested this myself and while one area tells me to select a data plan (and the only area selected is the unlimited email and internet), the final confirmation page shows my total bill much lower than what I pay now. For example it shows my final monthly charges will be around $67 a month, but I currently pay $97 a month

Nobody has incurred the extra $20 while under contract.

Unless something has changed you can buy a phone using payment plan and keep your UDP.

Looks like I will be ordering the iPhone SE 64gb MLMF2LL/A from Verizon's website. Once it arrives, I will shred the SIM card before power it on.

Question:
If I put a T-Mobile or AT&T SIM card inside and power on this Verizon iPhone SE on for the very first time, will that cause the phone to be locked to T-Mobile or AT&T forever?

I know this happens if the iPhone was purchased from Target and/or Best Buy. Not sure if I buy the iPhone directly from VerizonWireless.com. (because Target and/or Best Buy sells a SIM unlocked version)

Thanks for your help!
