Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

This ended up getting really long...

I am 25 and work as a data analyst at an insurance software company. I love technology and seeing live music. I have been a T-Mobile customer for nearly 8 years. My contract is up with T-Mobile on Nov 17. My first smartphone was BlackBerry Pearl 8100. I loved it. When I had opportunity for an upgrade I opted for the BlackBerry Bold 9700. Started with OS 5.0 upgraded to OS 6.0 when available. I was always a big proponent of BlackBerry. But I admittedly had my eyes closed for a while. I wasn't educated about Android OS. Not a fan of Apple so I never even considered an iPhone. I had full intentions of moving on to the latest and greatest Blackberry when the time comes.

Over the last year several close friends had picked up Android devices. I liked them, but didn't know much about Android and truthfully wasn't interested. Over time I started noticing that their devices were a lot faster than mine. I thought it might just be their network at first. I really only went with T-Mobile initially because the rates were a bit cheaper. I have been travelling much more lately and would be bothered by the spotty coverage areas. I would find myself asking to use friends phones when I didn't have service. And I noticed everything was faster. Some of it was the network, but there were a lot of things that they did better. Even apps that I have on my Bold, they would have the same app and it would be better and more robust. I found myself liking the whole experience. Already being a big fan of all things Google I was getting interested and started to pay attention.

I had always followed CrackBerry and after becoming interested in Android I made the obvious jump to Android Central. Just started slowly checking the posts, keeping an eye on new phones being released, OS updates, news, etc. I still wasn't totally convinced I was going to Android though. I loved BlackBerry. I love the keypad on the Bold. I wasn't sure I wanted to give up the keypad for a touch screen device. I wasn't a fan of any of the slider phones that run Android. I was also holding out hope for comparable next generation BlackBerry devices and the next BlackBerry OS. Being a CrackBerry follower, I had been fearful of what would come of it. Pretty much no new phones all year. All of the focus was seemingly on the Playbook. Then OS 7 is announced and we see their first round of devices. If I were to buy a new BlackBerry it would be the Bold 9900. Which is pretty much the same device I have now and OS 7 is not very different from OS6. BBX is in the pipeline, and new phones will come along with that. But from what I have seen on the PlayBook OS, it still isn't very exciting to me. So I knew that these would be my BlackBerry options when my contract expires. It is hard to justify buying pretty much the same device with pretty much the same user experience when in the past buying a new phone meant a new experience, not to mention I had Android on the brain.

At that point I started looking at Android a lot more seriously. I was keeping an eye on several phones throughout the second half of this year. Paying closer attention to the OS, the whole ecosystem, watching the podcasts here, etc. I was hooked. I started playing with all of my friend's phones, co-worker's phones, etc. I found that I really liked the build of the HTC phones. Thunderbolt and EVO 4G are great "feeling" phones. Had my contract been up when those were new to the market I would seriously considered those. I wasn't too thrilled about Samsung Galaxy S2. I was watching for the Motorola Droid Bionic. But what I was really hoping for was the HTC Rezound(Vigor). The latest and greatest HTC phone. And at this point, I knew I wanted to go with Verizon. I need some 4G LTE. Then I start hearing about the new Nexus and what the line is about. Being a bit of a nerd I was definitely interested in the "pure Android" experience. Then there was ICS. The latest iteration of Android that would bring the phone and tablet OS together. That was exciting as well.

It all culminated in one fateful evening, Oct 18, when the power was out in my home. I had nothing to do. I was on my laptop on battery power with no internet, thankfully I could tether my Bold and use my service to browse on the web. I was chatting with a friend on GChat that was watching the Nexus event. I had been aware of it since I was excited to hear ICS was coming out, I knew I would want my next device to have it and was certainly interested in the Nexus. I was keeping track of the live blog, but decided to give the stream a shot(wasn't sure how well it would go BlackBerry, 3G, T-Mobile). It got choppy if I would get a text or email but it worked great. ICS = Sold. After watching that I had to have the Nexus and ICS.

After the initial hype I looked a lot more closely at the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus line, and ICS. I love the idea of the Nexus line. I love ICS. But having been following the latest phone specs, I was a bit underwhelmed when I started seeing what would be in the Nexus. I bought in to it all. No Gorilla Glass! 1.2ghz processor only! No HDMI out! Well, these forums(and the podcast last week) have put all of that to rest. As of now I have been primarily a lurker, but will likely come out of hiding once I really dig in to Android. Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be my next phone and I will make the jump to Verizon. I just hope it is out by or around Nov 17 when my contract ends. The leaked pics indicated Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound MSRP starting Nov 10. Other parts of the world will get Galaxy Nexus on Nov 17. So let's hope for something around there so I can get my new phone immediately when my contract ends and I don't have to pay for another month on T-Mobile!

I still feel bad about leaving BlackBerry... But I feel like they did it to themselves...

So, the power went out at my house for about an hour today. Instantly reminded me of the night I watched the Nexus event. Potentially a sign that good things are to come???? I sure hope so, this wait is killing me!

Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

I'm 35 and i work at an oil refinery love the job but hate the hours, 12 hour shifts night and days, right now im working the graveyard shift 500pm to 500am and that means 10 hours left yahh, i live in NJ and I’m currently a blackberry storm 2 user (my first smartphone) yes I said storm 2 it’s not a typo I wish it was.I was kinda stuck because i won tons of apps off crackberry so i was thinking about getting a new blackberry but screw that so im thinking my next device is going to be the galaxy nexus I looked at the reviews and listening to all the hype and I’m liking it. My wife is looking at the iphone4S she has the same phone as I do. We hate it we can’t wait till our upgrade date is here. I looked at the razor at best buy the other day and I would have bought it right then and there if I didn’t know the galaxy nexus was due out soon and my due date is next week (he he just in time) .I follow all the sites crackberry (is where i post mostly or try to help some poor storm2 user out) , android, and tipb plus i listen to all the podcast . I mostly lurk around in the background unless I have an issue or a question. I’m a big tech nerd lol I love reading the reviews and seeing the demos on phones. I’m mad a rim, the bb7 devices are sucky compared to what android is coming out with. What really sucks is moneys tight I probably will have to wait a few weeks after the galaxy nexus comes out but I think I’m going to buy it , ill just keep watching android and watch those awesome reviews and demos when it comes out to see what ill be in store for. For the contest hey if I got a case for the phone and haven’t even bought the phone yet hey that’s less I have to buy, that would help me out.;):D.

Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

My use of handhelds goes way back:

Previous OS/Devices:
Handspring Visor Deluxe (PDA with no phone, Palm OS)
Handspring Treo 180g (1st all in one device, anyone else remember grafitti?)
Palm Treo 600 (This was a great phone)
Blackberry 8430 (Corporate stepped in and ruined the fun)
Palm Pre+

Previous Forums:
Treo Central
Crackberry
Pre Central

I was the International Project Engineer for my company. As such I traveled a lot and the PDA was just the thing for a frequent traveler to keep things in order, however you still had to carry a separate phone. The 1st Treo was great! One device had it all! Boy have things changes since the original Treo.

As you can see I've been a long time fan of Palm. I'm totally bummed by the demise of PalmOS. In my opinion it is still one of the slickest interfaces to use. My Pre has been and still is one of the best phones I've ever used. But its showings its age and its time to move on. I like the openess of the Android platform and I'm planning of starting my experience with a Galaxy Nexus.

Thanks

Hello to everyone in the android world!:)

I'm currently a pharmacy student at the UTHSC. I've been browsing this forum for a while now looking specifically at the Galaxy Nexus. I would love to have this phone during rotations and so on. My current phone is a dumb phone; LG voyager vx10000... I've had this phone for almost 3yrs this coming December. Excited to make this big transition!:D

Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

Hey Everyjuan,
I live in the Great Northwest in a little city just north of Seattle.
I work in a very large metal building (I think it's over a mile long) where we build very large airplanes.
I play on whatever body of water the next Sailboat race is. I own a San Juan 21 (see avatar) and I crew on a J-30.
I currently own a Thunderbolt. Before that a Droid X, HTC incredible, OG Droid, BB Storm.
I got the storm thinking the phone hardware was OK, and the software would be upgraded to make the phone usable. Never happened.
The Incredible was a great phone but my XXL hands made typing difficult so I got a Droid X
The X is a great phone but I had another upgrade (well, my wife had an upgrade) so I got a Thunderbolt. Again thinking it will be all right when the update happens. NEVER AGAIN. will I buy a phone expecting it to be fixed by the next update unless it's a pure Google phone.
So, I am eagerly awaiting the Nexus so I can use my wife's upgrade, She will trade her X for the Thunderbolt. Now I just have to teach her to plug the thing every time she sits down.

Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

No need for myself to be entered into the contest, but I like being here so I'll introduce myself a bit!

My name is Joey, I've had a Thunderbolt since Launch Day. I can completely relate to everything you guys are going through with this phone, and I know how terrible it is for those of you planning to buy it. Literally every thread I see here is like Deja Vu from January/February!! It's incredible!

I really would love to have this phone just to flash ROMs and play with as a whole, but it's not realistic since I have a Thunderbolt on contract aaaaaand no extra money to buy one full retail. I'm hoping this forum keeps me fixed, haha.

Take pride in this community while it lasts. You find out who the real "fans" of the phone are, and it's possibly the best community you'll get to be a part of for the existence of the phone, so don't waste it being too angry at everyone else and one another; you may be seeing a lot of them and needing their help!

Just an old guy trying to keep up with the cell phone world. one of my opinions is "the speed they are throwing these new phones at the barn wall is disgustiog, greed motivated'

Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

Hey guys, I'm a 22 year old going to college at Kansas State University. I currently have the Droid 2 Global and really like the phone until here recently when it started having a mind of its own. I don't know how much longer I can take it as I'm patiently waiting for the Nexus to come out. I also recently realized that I made a crappy purchase as there isn't much developer support for the Global and not to many ports out for the phone in which I can flash to.

I don't really follow to many forums outside of sports forums. I occasionally visit the Motorola user forum for the Droid 2 Global. This is the only forum I have used to follow the Galaxy Nexus information and I am glad I found this site as it has been pretty awesome. Being honest, I just came here looking for release date information but as I have read through the threads the last few days, I have realized that there are some smart people posting here and this might be a useful forum for me once I get my GN. I'm not a guy to post at all so you won't see me talking that much unless I have a very pertinent question that no of the other threads have answered. I usually just sit there and read though page after page of different threads.

I am a senior this year and will graduate in may with a degree in Agronomy. I am planning on continuing my education and getting a Masters. With that I am looking forward to using my Galaxy Nexus for the last two and a half years of my higher education career. Also, once I get the Nexus I will be looking for some low profile cases that offer awesome protection as I will be out in the field quite a bit. I don't have a case for my Global right now and have dropped it a few times which I think has led to the crazy screen touching it has.

Well that's probably the most you will hear from me, but I will be around just lurking in the background reading what others have to say. Thanks for the awesome forum though.

Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

About time I jumped on this. I've been this forum for a few months now, as I've been holding out for the right phone for me. I have been eligible for an upgrade for nearly a year, but I'm a cheapass that won't pay for data on something I'm only half in love with. Here behold, I stalk the forums night and day for word of the gnex's release haha.

Graduating nursing school, I plan on using the phone as a reference power house and media. In any case, it's about time I upgrade out of a freaking qwerty phone!

Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

Well I've become a mobile addict thanks to you folks. It started with me getting the first iPhone in 2007 and yes I too paid full price, 599.99, with a two year contract. I loved having access to the internet but using Safari was a slow process. When Verizon advertised the Motorola Droid I researched this phone for three weeks and finally gave in and tried it. Loved it! Really loved it and the 3G network. Not until the update to Froyo did I see the phone run slower and the need to reboot it after adding apps to it. It started to be a chore using it. When Apple came out with the iPhone 4 I decided to get but I still liked my Droid and found myself with two mobile phones. My co workers were puzzled as why I carried two phones and I said because I love them both but maybe one day I will go down to one phone.
Now that my contract with Verizon is complete I can drop them and stay with AT&T with my iPhone but I just got to get my hands on that new Galaxy Nexus and see bring back the love I felt for my first Android phone. I will then be in the predicament of again having two mobile carriers.
You all in these forums have helped me a lot in getting more knowledge about the specs on the devices which I read intensely. For an older man of 60 my family and friends turn to me when they have problems with their Android phones especially my sister. She too got her first smartphone a week after me and I have had to update her firmware as Sprint did not do an OTA. She now is a proud owner of the Samsung Galaxy S II and you can't pry it out of her hands. Oh and yes she's had problems which even Sprint could not help her with and I fixed it. I now await her return from Italy to help her get Skype working correctly. She can't get it to work.
Anyway I too am anxiously awaiting Verizon to release the Galaxy Nexus.
Keep up the good advice. Love listening to the weekly podcast and listening to the gang. Phil sounds so cheery and makes my day and I've had a bad year. I've been recouping from major spinal surgery and am mostly confined to bed or chair for the last 6 months so your info keeps me busy and entertained as well. Cory it's also a joy to hear your input. You guys are great.
Hope that my attachment of my first Droid appears. I'm still a novice and will continue to learn and grow with the many new devices to come down the pike.

Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

My first device was a Nokia 5800. Got bored of it and got myself my first Android, the Samsung Galaxy Spica. After half a year using the device, I fell in love with Android and wanted the newer versions(back in the time, Froyo) which samsung was not providing. So, I rooted the Spica and installed an unofficial port of CM. Now I am waiting for the Galaxy Nexus to launch and am buying it ASAP.
And, no I haven't been part of any other forums so far and am really enjoying the Android Central forums.
I plan to continue to participate at AC forums even after I get the Galaxy Nexus! :) :)

Former OS/Device:
I had a envy3 for 2 years
I got the Thunderbolt on release day as my first smart phone :)

AC since the start

How would you describe yourself - in terms of forum participation?: I was a helper during the thunderbolt launch and the months after, but when the questions got repeatative I turned to just looking and gathering info. Im currently trying not to get too into the GN forums because I dont know if I can afford one off contract, but its hard not to gawk at the posts. :P

Any other interesting stuff you feel comfortable sharing.
So as you can tell I have a thunderbolt..... I didnt have many issues on the release and minimal issues the following months. but im sad to say my luck is running out. the bugs are starting to show their heads and I dont know what to do. the dreaded data connectivity drops even my wifi radio drops out now. typing lags on mine I even paid for thumb keyboard and nothing works (factory resets up the wazoo.

I know the plight of us tbolt users. :P I was really hoping to keep this phone for 2 or more years but at this point I doubt it will make it.

also I like cheese

Re: Introduce Yourselves (oh and there's a contest in here as wel

The Droid2 is my first smartphone and I landed at AC early on. I quickly got to the ROM-flashing stage and AC, RootzWiki, and XDA have been my main resources.

Once the Nexus appeared, I became a dedicated (addicted?) reader of these forums. Mostly a lurker, but I'll post if I think I can add something to a discussion.
