iOS 8, Your Thoughts?

I get a little bothered that Hangouts on my WiFi Nexus 7 can't receive or send any of the sms/ mms message from the Hangouts app on my phone.
I did not know that. That is really bad design. The whole idea of owning devices with the same operating system is integration. I get the same iMessages on my iPad rMini that I get on my iPhone 5.

Handoff looks cool, but it's not too impressive since you can do the same things with apps like DeskSMS and Google Voice.

It is done natively and with every Apple made app. Say you are working on a spreadsheet with Numbers on your Mac. Then you go up to your bedroom and pick up your IPad and continue working where you left off on your Mac. You get a phone call on your iPhone, but the phone is in the bedroom and you are working on your Mac in your study, your Mac will ring and you can answer the call.

What is interesting to me is that CrackBerry and WPCentral has like 2-4 trending posts about iOS 8 and AC only has 2 threads that don't have half as many replies as their trending posts. I see this as the fact WP fans and BlackBerry fans are scared they are going to get squeezed out by Apple and I can't blame them. I actually read all the WPCentral ones and some people there are thinking on switching to iOS while those on Crackberry are just Apple bashing.

I think it's funny how they're whining on CrackBerry how Apple copied all the things from bb. The most bragged about feature on bb is being able to load boot leg Android apps on bb10! Lol

Oh OK, then that's more useful than just answering phone calls. I probably won't use it too much, but I can think of many people who will.

Lol. I am sorry to say this but it is true. These are also the same people who call Android: malware ridden, unsecured, Google steals everything about you, and the NSA will have all your information. WPCentral people call Android malware ridden, and say Google steals all your data and call Android ugly. It seems when peoples favorite OS is low you can do nothing but bash the competition.

I think it's good news for all iOS users, myself included. Obviously many of the new features (though not all) have been available from competitors in some form or another for a while, but that doesn't mean the new improvements aren't welcome. Plus, Apple is doing some stuff that other manufacturers simply haven't done. The new continuity and handoff features go much deeper than anything offered by android or WP, which is probably because Apple is leveraging their vertically integrated products. Developers also seem to be pretty excited by the new stuff, with the new language Swift getting the most attention.

At the end of the day, it increases competition. And that's what we all want, right?

I agree, Android users as you can tell, don't really care, but once you step into CrackBerry or WPCentral, they are foaming at the mouth about iOS 8.

I will consider moving iOS only if they get rid of that iMessage bug that hijacked your number. I can't lie iOS is more tempting now that you can do more with sharing and the fact apps will talk to each other.

It's annoying, but the problem is that most people don't turn off iMessage before switching. And pretty much everyone overlooks the fact that you also have to turn off FaceTime on your phone before switching as well. And you should probably turn off your phone number on iMessage on your ipad/mac. Apple does need to fix this, I totally agree.

iOS 8 seems to really improve the operating system. I know a certain engineer who's going to be very happy with the handoff feature.
Too bad my fourth gen iPod touch can't get the upgrade :P

I'm a WP fan and most of that is true. That said, if you don't acknowledge the issues, why would they fix them? My OS has it's shortcomings too. I mostly use it because the UI is better and the keyboard beats anything presently on the market but it has a ton of shortcomings.

They are supposedly working on a fix, hopefully they do it soon before iPhone 6 drops.

Actually none of that is true. That's why it's funny. UI being better is subjective, and as far as the keyboard goes. I don't think it is the best, but I think that's a subjective matter as well.

There's a thread elsewhere in this forum that states the advantages WP has that are actually true. These are my primary reasons for using it though. I just hate seeing fandroids refusing to acknowledge that their OS has flaws.

As someone who uses whichever phone and OS suits their needs, I love what Apple have finally done to their OS and can't wait for iOS8 to be rolled out to the public.

To be honest, i've had a less than stellar time with my Android devices and my primary reasons for getting an Android device was for a larger screen and quick reply to SMS messages. If Apple bring out a phone with a larger screen and it has iOS 8 on it with the quick reply function, then I am sold and will happily ditch my POS Samsung device and go back to an iPhone.

As I said above and have frequently said on here, I will use whichever device suits my needs and as my Note 3 has caused me to lose several thousand pounds of business by turning itself off (battery was at 78%) and making me miss an important and urgent call, Samsung can basically Foxtrot Oscar.

...and if you go over to iMore, you'll see no mention of any of the other platforms at all.

AirDrop and Handoff will be huge for me since my desktop computer is a Mac Mini. I don't think it is enough to pull me away from Android, if for no other reason than the sheer number of apps I own on Android. It might sell me on an iPad though.

I have to admit, It can be nice to have everything in one ecosystem...very seamless experience for me with my Android phone, tablet and Chromebook.

I have to say the most wanted feature I have wanted on Android that is part of iOS/MacOS is their Handoff ability along with their imessge service. I get a little bothered that Hangouts on my WiFi Nexus 7 can't receive or send any of the sms/ mms message from the Hangouts app on my phone.

Handoff looks cool, but it's not too impressive since you can do the same things with apps like DeskSMS and Google Voice.

The capability is there, but having it built-in to Apple's products will make it much easier to use.

I use GV for phone voice calls quite a bit, and it's an awesome service that already has the capability to ring all your devices (phone, computer, etc), but I still have to rely on my mobile number for texting because GV still doesn't support MMS.

I feel like there is so much potential with Google Voice, I just can't understand why there has been so little development with that service. If you can get GV fully integrated with Hangouts and get MMS supported, then you'll basically have the same service Apple is advertising here. Maybe someday...

Just to be clear, it's ONLY the SMS text messages (sent to your mobile number) that don't sync across devices. Messages sent through the Hangouts system are synced across all of your devices. As far as I know, it's the same with iMessage, at least for now.

Every OS has flaws but Android has less than the others this stage in the game. The only thing I can think of is inconsistency with devices and updates but other than that we reached the point where Android is just as good or better than other OS's.

For me it comes down to screen size. I have seen the dummy phone that they sent out to the company that make cases. If that's what it will be, I don't want it. Big phone with still only a 4.7 inch screen? No thanks. I want a minimum 5 inch screen, but small bezel to keep the phone smaller.

If Apple is listening a 6 inch screened phone and you will have a new customer!

That probably won't happen for another 5-7 years. It took them 5 years to grow .5 inches to 4 inches on the iPhone 5.

XCode Apples Dev tool shows an emulator for resizable iPhone. A bigger 4.7" iPhone is all but confirmed.

I love iOS 8. You guys do realize handoffs won't just be Apple only apps but any app that implements that API right?
