iPad Mini resolution no match for Nexus 7.

The same reasons that make large Android phones like the GS3 and the HOX very easy to hold (thin and light) will make the iPad mini easy to hold in one hand.

Wrong. It is the width of the iPad mini (5.3 in) that makes it not that easy to use with one hand, it has nothing to do with the thinness or weight. I can comfortably hold my N7 with one hand (4.72 in wide), but it is not easy for everyone. The ipad mini would never be easy for me to hold with one hand. Just because Apple says something (iPad mini is easy to use with one hand) does not make it true.

The iPad mini is not 'fat' by any means. The same reasons that make large Android phones like the GS3 and the HOX very easy to hold (thin and light) will make the iPad mini easy to hold in one hand.

I hereby award you today's BS award for claiming that a "large android phone like the GS3..", being easy to hold, extrapolates to the ipad mini also being easy to hold in one hand. WOW! THAT is a stretch (pun intended).

I was just pointing out how hypocritical some people can be. FWIW, I also point out hypocrisy on Apple forums.

Hypocrisy exists, granted, but you are citing a poor example.

My comfortable holding position, which puts my thumb over the screen to use it one-handed, is just under 5 inches wide. My jeans and slacks pockets are about 5 inches wide. My fingers are long. My fingertips are proportionately large.

So the optimum size for a portable device for me starts at about 2 and a half inches wide (wide enough to make a useable on-screen keyboard) and ends a little under 5 inches wide. My HTC thunderbolt is really a little below the minimum size for my use, as evidenced by the number of edits I've had to make to this post. But it's useable, if barely, thanks to Swype (not available on iPhone).

My nexus seven is ever so slightly above my personal maximum. But I can use it fairly well one-handed and fit it in a jeans pocket. So I get by fine with it.

The iPhone is well below my minimum. The iPad mini is well above my maximum. I can use either, but they are way outside the range I find enjoyable to use.

I see no hypocrisy in saying that an iPhone is too narrow for me to use, and an iPad mini is too wide to be as portable as I want a tablet to be. It's the honest truth and I truly feel that I am judging both devices based on consistent usability criteria.

In all honesty, I'd like my nexus seven a tad more if it was about a half inch narrower. But I can still use it mostly with one hand and it fits into my jeans pocket, so that makes it a far better fit than an iPad mini which can do neither of these things.

The hypocrisy in this thread is amazing. A wider iPad is now suddenly uncomfortable to hold, but when Android phones come with 4.7", 4.8" screen compared to the iPhone's 4" screen, they are perfectly fine. View attachment 42749
Please help me understand this. Suppose we have devices A through G in ascending size. Suppose the | represents the limit of what's a convenient size for a person.

Person 1 might draw the line like: A B C | D E F G
Person 2 might draw the line like: A B C D E | F G

Explain to me how it's " hypocrisy" for either of them to say increasing from B to C is perfectly fine, but device F is too big.

I think I might hold off on one hand criticism till I get a chance to play with one. I just dunno. My flyer was just as easy to hold as my nexus 7, and it was a tad wider, how much I dunno. But one thing about that flyer, the slick aluminum backplate often resulted in me dropping it often, and that needs to be taken into account. How slick is the ipad mini?

I'd maybe considered it but at $330 ill pass waiting to see the 32 gb nexus 7.

The amazing galaxy s3 :D

They can't get the retina display. These don't have them. They pissed of Samsung and now samsung is cutting them off. Samsung Display cuts Apple ties, rebounds with competitors | News | TechRadar

Yeah considering how many devices they showed off with retina display yesterday, that wouldn't make much sense

Yeah, don't tell me you have your hands wrapped around the N7 like this and then simultaneously use the thumb to navigate as well. Because that would be impossible. When people use the tablet in one hand they are holding it like a magazine in one hand like this for which the iPad mini will be much more comfortable than either the N7 or the Kindle Fire for reasons mentioned in my previous post. I know it because I have the old Kindle Fire.

I hereby award you today's BS award for claiming that a "large android phone like the GS3..", being easy to hold, extrapolates to the ipad mini also being easy to hold in one hand. WOW! THAT is a stretch (pun intended).
My point went way over your head. I was talking about the hypocrisy of the same people that defend large Android phones bashing the iPad mini for being big, when in fact it is much more smaller than than the N7 (except width - which should even matter, because no one goes around holding their tablets like this) and the Kindle Fire HD in every dimension (despite having a larger screen), not to mention it is much lighter than both devices. Also good job completely ignoring my comparison in specs between the Kindle Fire HD and the iPad mini. Unless you bashed the Kindle Fire HD also for being too wide or uncomfortable, your argument has no credibility.

Bashing Apple for bashing's sake is childish. Unless you guys had bad things to say about the Kindle Fire HDs portability also, just going after the iPad mini for the same reason (when it is infact much more portable) is just ridiculous. Criticize the iPad for being overpriced (it is probably $100 too expensive), criticize its screen for being low resolution (should have been a retina to begin with at that price), criticize it for putting an older gen processor (but even with the older processor it will most definitely run smoother than most Android tablets), but don't bash them for things that they don't suck at - in this case the iPad mini's usability. They probably built hundreds of prototypes before finializing the size. You think they didn't think about people's comfort level in holding it in one hand especially when they highlighted this 'feature' in their keynote? Also, I read on CNET that the iPad mini is also smart enough to detect accidental touches on the side of the screen because of its small bezel. Apple did think things through.

Is Samsung currently the only company who has the tech to mfg retina displays? Can Sony or Sharp do the same thing?

And I agree, I doubt Samsung will cut those ties as a supplier for Apple. It will be Apple that cuts the ties at some point, if it even happens at all.

Honestly I don't know. Wherever they are getting their supply from, there is no shortage that's for sure

Sorry, I disagree here...it's completely subjective what is comfortable or easy or "usable" for individuals. Saying the iPad mini will be "much more comfortable" is an opinion, nothing more.

No doubt they did their homework, but with the high price, older tech, and slightly larger than 7" size, this is not something I expected from Apple. If it had the tech of the new iPad in a 7" size similar to the N7, I would say it is a great product. It will, of course, sell like mini hotcakes!

This below quote was what you said in one of your previous posts. If the same standards apply to you, I am going to venture a guess and say that it is just your 'opinion' as well.

In fact backed up my posts with links to pictures for different usability scenarios. I'd like someone to argue why what I said doesn't makes sense. I welcome anyone to link to pictures like I did and show how they use their tablets to prove me wrong.

Just because I like to wear skinny jeans, a picture in the magazine shows someone wearing skinny jeans, doesn't mean that you like to wear skinny jeans. My 2 cents.

It is all strictly my opinion, nothing more, that is correct. This stuff about comfort is purely subjective. But to say the thinness and weight are what make it more or less comfortable without including the width was leaving out an important spec in the possible comfort factor, right? That's all I was trying to say. Maybe we disagree, no big deal.
