iPad or Tab

I would go with the Samsung Tab if you want to use your Android apps on it. 7" seems like a better size too. I haven't tried the iPad, but did play with a Viewsonic 10" tablet. It just seemed too large for my tastes. Although, I will say iOS has much more and better apps (especially games) than Android. These should all be factors in your decision.

I would go with the tab first its android. Its smaller if I wanted something that big id carry a laptop it has a front facing camera which is awesome

Sprint Tab Owner

As someone who owns the tab I can tell you that this thing is amazing. The one thing that it does lack as it as been previously noted, was the lack of an effective office suite. It does come preloaded with think free office, but it is not iwork or msoffice.

Other than that it does work great as a companion device to compliment your laptop if you are doing research on a particular subject. For home use I have been finding myself using the tab more than my laptop.

also the web browser is not all that bad and all the apps I downloaded fit the screen perfectly except robo defense (does not scale). The tab is new but give it a few months and we should start to see a lot of apps that take advantage of the 7 inch screen. Also with samsung saying they made a 7 inch super amoled screen, we should see a sequel, but it also means that Samsung is committed to the tablet market and the 7 inch screen size for the foreseeable future.

I've had an iPad since release day, and I really like it. Though I use it for games and media consumption rather than work. And when it becomes obsolete I'll replace it with an Android tablet of some sort. Though I am going to delay that as long as possible, the iPad is excellent for what it is.

I'd be leary of buying any Android tablet just yet, as even Google reportedly has said the OS isn't quite there yet for operating tablets. If you can wait till early next year, there should be much better Android tablets available using Honeycomb. Of course, the money your boss intends to use for this may not be available then....

The big issue I have is PRICE. Tab is just WAY too expensive for what you're getting. The 3mp rear camera is a joke- videoconference is not ready for primetime on android, and the removed phone capability removes this from being a killer all in one device for the car or office on a dock.

I want to love the TAB- but only at $400 NO CONTRACT or maybe if it was 8.5" a better inbetween size IMHO for it's price. Compared to the Viewsonic 10.1" GTab- the Galaxy Tab is very overpriced.

Samsung has always priced their products relatively high...their TVs/Monitors are all a bit higher...but the quality is there. For TVs Samsung is like the Apple of TVs...

Yes I think it is priced a bit high...maybe 500-550 for the same thing, but I really don't think its that far out there. The build quality is phenomenal. Its plastic yes, but honestly, I don't even really notice.

I don't know if anyone here can really answer the OP's question, since it is really a subjective experience. You need to look at your own needs, usage, etc. Try both out beforehand if you can.

I'm an EVO user myself, who happens to also own a WiFi iPad, 64gb. I love mine, but find I use it mostly at home, and mostly as an entertainment device. Netflix particularly is awesome on the iPad. Apple also released iOS 4.2 for the iPad today, which is a major improvement in functionality.

If I could afford another device, I'd like to have the Tab too though. It looks to be sweet too.

I concur with portability comments. The iPad is just large enough and heavy enough that I don't lug it around much, beyond home. However, the 10 hour battery life is hard to beat. On a truly lazy day, I could watch 4-5 movies without charging, from Netflix. Games can also be extra good on the iPad, because the processor can handle them and the screen is a good gaming size. The iPad is a great lap device. It's heavy holding in the air, like one would a Kindle though.

Docs To Go is a good product, and available on Android and iOS. It's certainly far less costly than buying the full iWork suite for iOS.

I had the Sprint version and returned it for the AT&T version.

I do agree that the IPad is a bit to big for me, but I do think for some people that's what they're looking for.

I like Android and all that it has to offer. Does the iOS currently have some advantages, maybe but that's momentary. And like everyone else has said Docs to Go is still the best Office product for Android, iOS, RIM and even Windows Phone..even better than the native mobile versions of Office. And it is very inexpensive.

Also, one thing to know is that the Sprint version only has 3 homescreen panels and the AT&T version has 5. As I just got AT&T version, I haven't yet seen all that's different between the two versions yet.

Every Tab should have the ability to add additional homescreens, up to 9, regardless of carrier... Right?

For both the Sprint version and the ATT version, the number of home screens is adjustable up to 9. You can change the number in the settings or fill up your current number with widgets then attempt to add another widget and it will automatically add another home screen.

One advantage that the ATT version does have over the Sprint version is 16GB internal memory versus only 2GB for the Sprint Version.

For me the ipad cant even come close the the Galaxy in so many ways. Mainly because I like to hack and flash custom firmware. You just cant do that on the ipad. Not to mention lack of GPS, camera and voice calling on the ipad. Yes voice calling. With the ATT or Tmobile version of the Galaxy it is a simple procedure to flash the European firmware which gives you full sim unlock and voice capabilities. Cant do that either on a ipad.

I don't own either honestly. Personally between the two I'd buy an ipad right now. Having a large screen android phone and just a slightly bigger 7" tab really seems redundant. Best option is to wait until android 3.0 with 10" screens come out. The next ipad comes out supposedly in March/April and will be significantly lighter and with cameras front and rear facing. Honestly, waiting six months will have incredibly better hardware for both the ipad and android. Lastly, the tab has an inferior and smaller screen. It is just a traditional LCD (not super LCD/IPS). Honestly if I have a choice between the inferior old style LCD or a Super LCD/IPS, I'll take the larger IPS screen of the IPAD. What's the deal with a smaller, cheaper inferior LCD on the Tab? Why did they not use their OMLED?

The people who say a Tab is too small as compared an iPad are often the same people who will tell you an EVO is too big when compared to an iPhone.

The difference in size between a large Android phone and the Tab is 2.7". The difference in size between the Tab and the iPad is 2.7". Strange that the former is described as insignificant while the latter is a HUGE deal....

Have you actually seen a difference in the quality of the two screens, or are you purely working off specs?

I honestly was underwhelmed by my experience with the Galaxy Tab. I felt as though the operating system was an afterthought on that device. Don't get me wrong, I love android as much as the next guy, but it just didn't seem to be a good fit. This may be a different story when we see an OS optimized for that kind of device.

As it stands, I'll be sticking with my iPad. I'm not an apple fanboy by any stretch, but I honestly believe that the iPad trumps it at this time for most things. As much as I hate to say, I liked the interface on the Dell Streak better than that of the experience on the Tab. The current android builds fit SO nicely on something the size of a phone, once we start thinking tablet functions though I really don't like Android as much.

Also, for build quality, the iPad definitely takes it. Tab reminds me something I'd get from ebay china for 179.99. Considering how ridiculously expensive the tab is, I really want to see more from it. (Upper end iPad is also too expensive... 829 for 64g 3g is ridic!) I just think for the base price of each, I really like the iPad better.

Now iPhone vs my Droid X... I'll take my droid x anytime!

I used the TAB for 2 days, then boxed it up and it's sitting in my office waiting to be returned to Sprint. I liked the portability. I really liked email, contacts and calendar. The TAB seemed more handy with those apps and it's size. For sure it's more portable. It was great for me and my job. But, the screen was too little for browsing. Any browser (Dolphin, Skyfire) I used didn't help the screen size. In fact, I really think the stock browser was best. I browse a lot on my iPad, and can't give up that screen real estate. I may try the TAB for another couple of days, and see if I like it any better.

I guess it feels strange with an EVO in your pocket, and a TAB in your hand. They are too similar. While the iPad is bigger, it seems more logical to carry it around.

I agree that size is the most important issue. As someone with an EVO, the 7 inch tablet doesnt make much sense to me. I cant do much more on the tablet than I can on the phone. That being said, the 10 inch iPad doesnt make much since either, since I have a 14 inch laptop. The issue here is two-fold. The iPad (and Tab from my experience) is great at consuming content, not creating it. If you need to type a two or three page paper, it will not be fun on the iPad, and nearly impossible on the Tab. So, carry a keyboard? Or carry your laptop? Well, that defeats the purpose of having a device in the middle if i were to carry a phone, tablet, and laptop.

All things the same (and I do love android more than iOS), I would have to go with an iPad based on the size. I would leave the laptop at home as more of a portable desktop. Unfortunately, cost isnt a factor as Samsung priced the tab very close to the iPad.

Also, dont forget, many other tablet makers will be coming out with 7, 10, and whatever size tablets this spring, most (I'm guessing) with android. Motorola has one in the works with VZW, a rumored 10 inch android tab, which would give you the size and the proper OS.

I've been wondering why nobody is talking about that. The commercial even touts their netbook as the culmination of all they have learned. I'm considering getting a netbook for my wife for Christmas (maybe even the Air) and was in Fry's yesterday. There were so many people crowding the netbook aisle that I just gave up and went to look at TVs.

One more thing, for those who say the Tab is just a larger Galaxy S; the same thing was said of the iPad/iPod Touch and, as it turns out, it's not. Just the fact that I'll be able to put all of the widgets that I'd like to have (but don't fit) on the main screen of my EVO is a big plus. The email and calendar apps take excellent advantage of the screen size, and reading Kindle books (even with the phone version of the app), documents from work, and surfing the web are a whole different experience from my EVO.

And, since the Tab is so portable, I can go back to carrying a smaller phone.

There is plenty of room in the market for both sizes.

Im one who feels the TAB is just a larger galaxy s. If I may ask....what functionality does the TAB offer that I currently dont get on my Epic? I cant justify a purchase that doesnt give me anything more than what I have now. My vote is for the iPad. I feel it is a nice size for a touch pad. Plus, as I said, I have an epic...a TAB seems pointless. I can justify the additional 6" with the iPad more than the extra 3" with the TAB.
