iPhone 6 Plus vs. Nexus X (or 6)

One could argue that the iPhone is doing that. It's software is strong enough to make, as you say, dated hardware compete with the latest. Hopefully Android L finally FINALLY offers up a decent OS.

iPhones are like an auto manufacturer who always builds a reliable, sharp looking car that performs well, but lags a year or two behind in introducing features that make the drive more enjoyable (like satellite radio, navigation, heated seats, etc). At least now they've introduced their SUV. It's still a very good product, but like an auto manufacturer, its brand history is something it will be able to rely on for only so long before failure to keep current with the competition will jeopardize it's long term opportunity.

As to Android OS, in what way did you find Android 4.4 functionally inferior to iOS 7 (not iOS 8 as a fair comparison there would require putting it against Android 5.0, for which we need to wait a little longer on release and experience of widespread real-world use)?

Google needs to step up their game with advertising and getting their great nexus brand in straight competition(threat) with apple.
I wish Google would attack the smartphone market more with their own Nexus products... but they continue to play a very delicate balancing act of putting out their own devices while not disturbing the natives (Samsung, HTC, Sony and whoever else puts out an Android product) I kind of wish they would have kept Motorola and just pushed their own Nexus or Moto X products harder to combat against Apple... But the reality is they only bought Motorola to beef up their patent portfolio and help them better in their legal battles with Apple....

Why would you ever want to have to interact with the carrier? T-Mobile charged an extra $100 just for the privilege of acquiring it from them.

It's all about choice. Some people would prefer to purchase a phone in person at a store where they can actually hold the phone and decide whether it meets their needs. No one is forcing anyone to step inside a store if they don't want to.

T-Mobile didn't have a choice on the Nexus 5 pricing. For whatever reason, Google didn't want to extend the subsidy to them. Perhaps this year we will have consistent pricing, no matter where you buy your Nexus phone.

- Can send text messages through your PC/laptop and answer calls through them (which is something Android needs to adopt ASAP)
- iPhone 6 has a full metal body, giving it a premium look and feel

That was initially flawed comparison: why not take Nexus 5? It about the same size as Nexus 6 (equal height, 2mm wider but it is too little difference, and screen estate is significantly larger).
But, I dare to break your illusions at two points: "premium" feel that was the sole reason to decide to sell iPhone 6 after 2 hours of usage (along with RTFM on overriding google 2 step authentication with phone setup, that is not what I call user friendly). I have dry hands and handling of aluminium bodies just doesn't feel reliable. I much prefer Nexus 5 black rubberized plastic. To say, I found iPhone 6 appearance to be pretty ugly, there are better looking android devices IMO.
About messaging: you can always enter at your google+ page and review/sent/recieve messages and calls there.

The 6+ is an ugly phone with a huge waste of space. Its ridiculous for a phone to be so large with such a tiny screen for its size. It doesn't even have front facing speakers or good build quality.

Also iOS is slower than Android, and just switching to the home screen (which you'll do a LOT) takes a long time on iOS, in comparison any Android phone from the last 2 years is faster and has better multitasking.

It's not that ridiculous. I had the 6+ on day one. It's big and beautiful but it could have been much better. Apple should have made more use out of the extra real estate. Multi window and a keyboard that slides to one side door easier one handed use would have been awesome. I actually had significant slowdown going in and out of the home screen navigating through apps, that's fine but really shouldn't be the case when my 5 and 5s didn't have that problem.

I think the Nexus 6 will be the better phone, but I really need to see the size of it to make that conclusion. I want to see how the overall size of the device ends up since the screen is expected to be 6.9" big if they keep the bezel down they could probably come close to the actual size of the iPhone 6 plus except the Nexus will have a larger display.

Really the three biggest things I'm interested in seeing is how the dimensions of the phone stack up to the iPhone 6 Plus, how the camera quality is compared to the iPhone (Since iPhone's have great camera's usually, and the Nexus series has had quite a bit of flounders), and if Google comes up with any software to take advantage of the screen size (I know a lot of reviewers complained about Apple not doing enough with the 6 Plus).

Here is a hint from a veteran Nexus user. Nexus phones are sold at affordable prices and have never been known for it's camera quality. Don't get your hope up.

I've owned both the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5 so I'm definitely aware of the crappy camera's over the years. Still, I'm holding out hope since the OnePlus One seemed to have had a good camera and that will end up being cheaper than the Nexus 6.

Unfortunately if the rumors are true and Motorola is making the Nexus 6 I'll set the bar very low for my expectations.

I'm not pinning my hopes to the camera hardware as much as the new camera API on L. It looks like google has figured out that their underlying camera software was crap. Hopefully the new API will dial it in better.
