One could argue that the iPhone is doing that. It's software is strong enough to make, as you say, dated hardware compete with the latest. Hopefully Android L finally FINALLY offers up a decent OS.
iPhones are like an auto manufacturer who always builds a reliable, sharp looking car that performs well, but lags a year or two behind in introducing features that make the drive more enjoyable (like satellite radio, navigation, heated seats, etc). At least now they've introduced their SUV. It's still a very good product, but like an auto manufacturer, its brand history is something it will be able to rely on for only so long before failure to keep current with the competition will jeopardize it's long term opportunity.
As to Android OS, in what way did you find Android 4.4 functionally inferior to iOS 7 (not iOS 8 as a fair comparison there would require putting it against Android 5.0, for which we need to wait a little longer on release and experience of widespread real-world use)?
