Is a screen protector really necessary?

Do you really need a screen protector if you have sturdy case with a outwards protrusion that protects the screen as well? I believe screen protectors are just a fad and kind of ruin the display. What do ya guys think?

No. Just get a good case with screen bumbs to provide resistance when phone drops on the ground.

It depends on the case and how it's dropped. I don't believe screen protectors offer much drop protection....mostly scratch prevention.

I don't think they are a fad. A fad is something that is just passing and won't stick around. Screen protectors have been around a while and aren't going away. They are something that some people feel they need or want.

I don't use them myself. I don't care for the way they feel. I do end up with light scratches on my screen, but usually they are only visible when the screen is off. I can only think of one time that a scratch was bad enough to really bother me. Definitely not enough of an issue or risk for me to change the way my screen feels.

Some will only use tempered glass but even a good film protector will prevent scratches without ruining the touch sensitivity, look and feel of the screen. I have a self healing film protector on my Pixel 2 since Gorilla Glass 5 is less scratch resistant.

I put my phone in the same pocket with keys in recently while drink and as I took it out got a nice deep scratch in my screen. Not sure if a protector would have helped the

Before that dropped a phone with outward protruding case screen first on the floor, hit a small stone which the case couldn't keep away from the screen lol there was a little chip after that.

Don't use one as of my purchase of the S7. With my past phones I used tempered glass protectors but since my S7 has a slight curve at the edges any protector I purchased was horrible, as far as the skins go I couldn't stand their feel.

So I went without and the first day I scratched it, small one but haven't had one since. So until the manufacturers come to their senses and make flat screens again I'll do without and deal with the scratches.

I've always used Otterbox Defenders and for the phones I've had, they come with plastic screen protectors.

As others have said, dropping the phone screen-down on a sidewalk with a pebble in the middle of the screen isn't going to be nice, even with a tempered glass protector, but my 5 year old phones, very much used every day, don't have a scratch or rub spot on the screens.

I definitely see the need for one - but moreso based on my usage patterns and my paranoia about breaking my sensitive technology. I'm always afraid to drop my phone or that the screen will crack or get scratches; so a tempered glass screen protector that has a "like glass" look and feel is the only way to go for me.

I agree with you. I use screen protectors not for drops, but for scratches.

Necessary? Only if you don't care about micro (or not so micro) scratches on your screen.
Gorilla glass or not, screens get scratched through NORMAL use. putting your phone in your pocket, dirt particles on your fingers, etc. will scratch the screen eventually.
I keep a screen protector on my phones because I know after using my phone a couple of years, I will want to upgrade. when I upgrade, I sell my old devices. I want to be in as good of shape as possible, so I get as much MONEY for it as possible.

I've always used a screen protector, usually a glass one. But since screens have started to have some sort of curve to them I've switched to self healing film. They fit better, are almost invisible, incredibly thin, don't have either that "Halo" look or look like you dropped a piece of plate glass in the middle of your screen.

So with a fairly slim case and a film protector I think I'm covered. If I break the screen, that's what Device Protection is for.

A case with a bump over the screen protects the phone from picking up scratches when laid face down on the desk but it won't stop a pebble when the phone is dropped on the ground. I prefer the glass screen protectors over the film type, they give a better feel and finger resistance when sliding the finger across the screen. They come off easier too. I have removed some film protectors and was afraid I would crack the screen with all the force required to pull the film off the screen.

Screen protectors are better for scratches than drops. So for drops, use a case and for scratches, use a screen protector.

I really didn't do a screen protector until my Note 8. My Note 4 didn't have one but noticed it got quite a few little scratches. My S7 Edge, same thing. So I thought with the investment, it can't hurt. Between that and having a bumper on it, it works pretty good.
