I've always used a screen protector, usually a glass one. But since screens have started to have some sort of curve to them I've switched to self healing film. They fit better, are almost invisible, incredibly thin, don't have either that "Halo" look or look like you dropped a piece of plate glass in the middle of your screen.
So with a fairly slim case and a film protector I think I'm covered. If I break the screen, that's what Device Protection is for.
When physics has its way, even a sturdy case with outward protrusion might not protect the screen. Agree with the benefits of a self-healing film. Having used the Tempered glass, I would say it reduced the sensitivity of the screen. Now I use the wet application from GadgetShieldz with Spigen thin fit case. Case gives my device the much-needed protection from drop and the film gives protection from scratches. Besides, the screen is very thin and has a great feel of touch.
