Is Android wear phone app useful for Gear S2?

I'm new to the Gear S2 and I've read somewhere that the Android wear phone app helps the S2, but I don't understand how. Anybody? Thanks.

But why would you need it if there is a Gear S2 app for the watch? What am I missing?

Android Wear is not necessary for the Gear S2 because the Gear S2 doesn't run on Android OS. Its OS is Tizen.

The watch does, however, connect with many Android phones. There are reports posted here that installing Android Wear on your phone helps the functionality of certain Android apps that you might have on your phone, but the watch doesn't need Android Wear to run its native apps.

One of the biggest reasons is for Hangouts. It installs something that allows you to be able to reply to Hangout messages from your Gear S2.
