Is anybody else unhappy with 18.5:9 aspect ratio?

If I'm not mistaken... You can pinch to zoom in/out in SMS... Historically I've reduced the font to the smallest size... As I approach 40 years old... I'm somewhere in the middle with the font size.
You're right you can. Could have happened in this case. Thanks

I've always thought that pill boxing or letter boxing was totally overrated in terms of it being an annoyance. As technologies advance I think video will make adjustments to take advantage of the 2:1 aspect ratio. Until its more of a universal thing the S8 allows you to tweak certain games and apps to better make use of the screen and while it isn't perfect, it doesn't have to be for me, at least for now.

I don't know why Samsung made 18.5:9 aspect ratio a thing before it became a standard thing. The pill boxing is terrible.

I ordered the Plus, Played with it a few times at BestBuy and I think I will be very happy with it once it comes.

Seriously? This has always been what Samsung does. Not sure why people are still surprised. Big phones when supposedly no one wanted them. An S-pen no one was going to use. Edge screens people thought were stupid. Split screen which people said was useless. I could go on.

When people ask why Samsung does something the community supposedly doesn't want, I just laugh.

Some of you act like you've never bought a Samsung device before.

The curved screens are still functionally meaningless and I still think they're stupid. I'll say the same thing about the LG G6, which did the 18:9 thing first. I still think it's stupid. It's not a standard yet.

I played again with the s8/s8+ and truely, I don't get It. granted iv never been a fan of any of the galaxy phones including the edge. my wife has the s7 and again, not a fan. i'm a note guy i guess.....

about the s8/s8+. it's beautiful(the screen) but where's the real estate? it looks like a toy(real esate wise) next to my mate 9. its way to narrow although I was not bothered by how tall it was. it just looks compromised to me. besides game-play or video who uses the top 25% of a screen besides weather and clock widgets. so that leaves the bottom 75% which is way to narrow in my book !!! my finger did however go right to the FPS so that was good.!

ps... gun to my head id purchase the s8 over the s8+ as it just looked less compromised to me....

anyhow that's my take. i'll enjoy my mate and wait and see what the Note has to offer.

Honestly I feel these new screen sizes are kinda deceptive and misleading...

I was excited to hear the new screens are a whopping 5.8" and 6.2" over last years 5.1" and 5.7" yet not be as big as 'traditional' phones you imagine in those sizes.

But after really comparing them at the store to my iPhone 6 and S7 Edge in how the S8 is basically the same width as my 4.7" screened iPhone 6 and the Plus is basically the same width as the 5.5" S7 Edge...

I know look at the S8 as basically a 4.7" phone (or 5.1" S7 I guess but I was using my phone as a side by side comparo) stretched lengthwise 1" and the S8 a 5.5" phone stretched out an inch just to get the diagonal measurement they can claim.

Samsung and LG and we will see if Apple does this and if they do they may set a new trend I really don't care for but may have no choice.

The S8 with the width of the S8 Plus and the height of the S8 would have been my preference.

LOL... I knew you'd say that. Still, my point is that Samsung phones are usually ahead of the curve, and this is no different.

You can't just get rid of half an inch consumed by the home button, replace it with screen and not increase the screen height and change the aspect ratio. It's just not possible.
Even by making it slightly wider, it will still have a weird aspect ratio, which will have black bars while playing video.
Everything else should give you more screen real estate.. I don't know what the huge outcry is all about.
Personally, I would like a wider phone as well to offset some of the narrowness.
But, then, it would be something like 17.5:9. I'm fine with that. Black bars will be minimized.

Not a fan. As long the Note 8 has the same portrait display width as the Note 7, I would not mind the stretch. Notes are two hand devices anyway, given the pen function.

why?? you can adjust the width to compensate for the half inch. what sammy has done is very misleading to the mind. it appears bigger but in reality its not. again. the s8/s8+ looked like a small fry toy next to the mate 9 imho ...... that said! i'm sure it will be an outstanding phone if thats your thing. i'll wait for the note ;) ....

Of course you can get rid of the physical buttons without shifting to weird aspect ratios. Samsung was the first OEM to do it in 2011 with the Galaxy Nexus. Soft keys, 16:9" aspect ratio, no gimmicks anywhere. Lots of stuff not great about that phone, but it might be their best designed phone to date.... Which is a scary statement, but possibly true.

I have said this before I also believe it's misleading, and this is not a criticism just an observation

I originally preordered the S8 but after finally having a chance to play with the devices I felt that the S8 was actually small maybe because I'm coming from an S7 edge, when I put the S8 in landscape for videos with the black bars I felt it was like a 5.1 inch screen, even in portrait I just felt it too narrow I could not believe it was a 5.8 inch screen

At least with the S8 plus in landscape and black bars it feels like a least a 5.5 inch screen and in portrait mode has the right width

I know many have stated the S8 plus too tall and narrow I'm one of the few that feel its the opposite lol

Anyhow this is not a criticism and I changed my preorder to the S8 plus :)

I agree. Thought I was the only one observing this.

You are not the only one but I do feel like most are not aware or concerned

Again this is not a criticism I'm actually very excited to get the new phone

In order for Samsung to maintain 18.5:9 ratio, if they widen the phone, the phone will get even taller. I hate to say it but they are going with the 18:9 trend and my guess is that they do not want to widen the phone any more because they feel that the width of it is the maximum comfortable width to hold in one hand. Since the Note is more thought of as a two handed phone, maybe they can widen it but they'll just have to make it longer as well to maintain that ratio, and I do believe that ratio is here to stay. This all has to do with maintaining that ratio and you just can't stretch it one way without stretching the other way as well.

I personally don't think it's misleading. To compensate for the corners, they are listing on the box that it is 6.1" vs 6.2" as as far as it being "longer" - no one seemed to claim LG was misleading with their G6. This is how they measure monitors - corner to corner. I guess now they need to consider mentioning ratio as well so that it is not confusing to people.

I am surprised, however, at how this has become a controversial topic. Many owners of the 6e, 7e, Note 7 have always experienced the feeling of the screen being smaller than was stated - mostly because of the curve and distortion that made the phones comfort viewing area to be smaller. Few people called it misleading though (however I admit that somewhere in these posts, I might has said that about the 7e and Note7 many moons ago).

I don't mind Samsung trying to innovate with LG rather than wait for something to become a standard after Apple decides it's the way to go.

Just to note it's not an Samsung or android thing... Apple did the same thing too. I was excited to hear the iPhone 5 was going to have a bigger screen but disappointed all they did was just stretch it lengthwise but it was better they go into the 16:9 ratio. The iPhone 6 was better with width and height increase.

I don't like the iPhone 6/7 Plus size but they can get rid of a lot of bezel and probably not change size or aspect ratio for their upcoming iPhone 8 Plus. Regular iPhone 8 they can probably go 5.1 from 4.7 and stay relatively small. I really hope they don't go 2:1.

Going to have to get used to it. I really like the fact that you can use it comfortably with one hand when texting (no more reaching your thumb to the max). Went with the S8+ because the S8 still felt small for some reason, and also the bigger battery.
