Is anyone else underwhelmed by the 5?

According to a couple of early reviews the under display speaker on the Pixel 5 sounds very tinny. That would be enough reason for me not to upgrade from my 3XL

Not sure, but they've had an "xl" model for the other pixels. As per past performance, Google will wait to see how the 5 does, and then release the 5xl with everything that the 5 owners wanted but didn't get. Probably a higher price tag too.:p

I'm not underwhelmed by the Pixel 5 at all. I find it right on the money for what it costs in Canada. I'll miss the face unlock and edge sense, but I'm glad they went with wide angle camera and I'll appreciate the larger battery for sure. While some on here lament the lack of an XL variant, I'm glad Google is still making smaller phones!

Hmm. Maybe that's when you try and test out the instore unit.

It was compared to a Pixel 4A in the same store right next to it. The Pixel 5 sound was inferior.
I've seen some Pixel 5 unboxing videos and the sound coming from the phone is bad. I just can't imagine a speaker placed underneath a slab of glass could sound anything but bad and inferior to one behind an open grill area. I guess Google assumes if good or great sound is required wireless earbuds will be used.

I'm leaning towards cancelling my pre order. I'm not thrilled about crappy speakers and a smaller screen already, so I'm just not convinced it's worth even the $350 i can get it for after trade in.

It is incredible that the Pixel 5, the more expensive of the three new phones, has a smaller screen than the Pixel 4A 5G and worse speaker sound than both the Pixel 4A and the 4A 5G.

It is definitely an odd choice for their high end phone. At the end of the day, the Pixel 5 won't do anything my 4XL can't, except maybe get me through a full day on a charge. It's not enough for me to put up with the smaller screen and much worse speakers.

I'm not seeing a lot of love for the P5 here - wondering if it is time to cancel the pre-order at Best Buy - 🤔

I have a Pixel 3XL. Yes I would be gaining a 90 HZ refresh rate, double the RAM and a better battery life. But I do not want to downgrade the size of my screen and downgrade speaker quality. That is more important to me.

...I'm glad they went with wide angle camera...

There should not be a wide angle vs. telephoto debate going on here. A $700 phone should have both! Moto is selling $350 phones with quad rear camera set ups!

That's my biggest issue with the 5. But I'll probably still get it.

I'm totally digging what is being offered this year. It's not like a phone should be a boombox. Speakers on a phone can get you by. I may be slightly biased as I have the Pixel Buds and don't really use my phone speakers anymore. Yeah there are complaints and you should take those into consideration but I'd wait for the real reviews to come out.

I am in no way bummed about switching from the 4XL to the 5.

Here is a fanboy photo of some of the Google products I've owned over the years. Taken on my 4XL. It's not everything....

While I don't use my phone speakers much for playing music I still expect them to perform when I do. It also not a good reason to take a step backwards.

What exactly do you expect external speakers on a phone to do? I'm curious about the use case.

I don't play music on my phone, my concern is with call quality. My hearing is not the best.
