Is Big Really Better?

Amen! I was expecting a serious article, but really enjoyed their take on the ridiculousness of the bigger-is-better trend.

Don't have big pockets for big phones >_>

The Moto X was good because it had a curve to it and it didn't feel like a brick. I have no clue what I am going to do about a phone after the Moto X. Phones are super big now and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus confirm it.

Wasn't the first phone bigger than today's phone. The size is just going back to the way it once were. Bigger is not better for everyone. Just make your own decision and get the phone you want.

I am pretty disappointed that there won't be a flagship phone this year under 5 inches. I was holding out hope for the new Moto X but they caved into the trend. I don't understand what 5.2 gives you over a more comfortable form factor of 4.5 - 4.7.

Personally I like the 4.9-5.5 range, though it depends how nicely weighted and proportioned the device is. It is unfortunate that you don't get the option to go smaller without compromising in other areas now, though.

It's all about choice
Problem is: Choice is disappearing.

Look at the new Moto G, for example. People raved about every aspect of the device, save its camera. The size was widely felt to be perfect. What have Lenovorola done? Made the display a half-inch bigger and given it (not very good) stereo speakers. So now what "choice" are buyers left with if they want a smaller, quality, essentially vanilla Android handset that won't break the bank?

"But it's only another 1/2 inch," I can hear.

One-half inch (1.3 cm) can be a lot. Where the "G" used to be handily one-handed for most people, even those with smaller hands, now it's not so much, any more. And front pocket storage? My current handset, a Sensation 4G, is slightly under 5" (12.6 cm) tall. It just fits comfortably "below the crease" in a front pocket when I'm seated. Add another 1/2" (1.3 cm) of height and a handset may be uncomfortably poking me in the hip, when seated. Bigger displays means greater risk of display damage due to flex (pockets, backpacks, etc.) or impact (dropping). Bigger displays require more power, which means either bigger, thus heavier batteries, or, as in the case of the new Moto G: Less runtime.

Put me squarely in the "bigger is not necessarily better" camp. Yes, the big displays certainly have the "Wow!" factor, but are handsets that have them necessarily more useful, on the whole, than their smaller predecessors? I'm not so sure.

What have Lenovorola done?
Minor nitpick, but Google still owns Motorola. The sale hasn't gone through yet, and history has shown that it takes about a year to work through stuff already in the pipeline and begin turning out devices conceived after an acquisition anyway, so at this rate the next round of Moto phones are likely to bear the mark of Google in spirit, too.

As a matter of fact, I have considered getting a Blackberry Classic because of its smaller size. I mean it looks nice and everything. I also have the 735 on my radar too because it is rumored to be coming to Verizon. I also looked at the Kyocera Brigadier.

The Z3 Compact would be ideal but it ain't coming to Verizon. So I'm sitting here with my trusty Razr M and waiting.

True, but I don't think that's coming to Verizon unfortunately. I'll probably just hold on to my Razr Maxx HD until the next wave of phones and hope the Android OEMs start offering more compact premium options.

Did anyone already suggest the Galaxy S5 Mini? Not as nice as the larger version, but maybe more comfortable.

I don't think anybody's particularly looking for a handset (I was, but I'm not now). Just a general commentary/discussion on how "big" isn't necessarily "better" :)

My 6 inch flex is awesome! Only thing that would be awesomer would be a 7 inch FLEX!

SENT FROM MY LG G-FLEX ON THE NOW NETWORK FROM SPRINT!👍
