I was speaking from a manufacturer's point of view. If it comes down to it, the screen difference between two phones is going to sway a lot more people than the speaker setup.
Plus for a manufacturer, it's still a lot cheaper to just use the defacto little speaker into the back of the unit. May only be $1.00/unit, but when you're selling tens of millions of units, that's a lot of money. They're better off putting a couple more dollars into the ~$75 screen. Yields a much bigger return.
There's some logic there, but once you get used to having front facing speakers it's tough to consider a device without them.
