Is it still worth buying a Nexus 4?

I am interested in the Nexus 4, but with rumours of a Nexus 5 coming out in May (either then or in November - 1 year cycle), as well as the recent releases of devices such as the S4, HTC One, Xperia Z and so on, is it still a good deal?

I currently have an iPhone 4S and will be looking to upgrade shortly.

The Nexus 4 was compared to the One in an article here and while the One was the winner overall they mention that the Nexus 4 is still a very powerful and great phone so if you get one it wouldn't be a bad choice by any means. If you can wait a bit to see if a Nexus 5 is announced though then you probably should just in case.

the nexus 4 is still the best bang for the buck phone on the market. The N4 is $350 outright for the 16GB version, while phones like the GS4 and HTCOne will be in the $600 range if you were to buy them outright.

And in all honesty, the GS4 and One might be a little faster, but won't make much of a difference in real world use. The screens may be a bit better, but I think we're hitting the point of diminishing returns on screen resolution on such small devices.

And lastly and most importantly. Nexus = more open device, vanilla android, and the *only* phone you can buy that will see updates in a timely fashion.

Well, I just got my Nexus 4 in February when it came in stock after a while in the UK. I love it. The fact the Nexus X/Motorola X is rumoured to be unveiled at Google's I/O in May.. Waiting 2 months isn't that long.

Even with the release of new phones, the Nexus 4's spec hasn't been outdated yet. Quad core processor, 2GB of RAM, which a lot of phones have at the moment.

The S4's Octa core processor sounds amazing, but personally feel it's OTT. A quad core phone still does the job as well.

Personally, I only got a Nexus phone is for the pure android experience. Before this, I had the GS2 which, UI wise.. I didn't like. Way too much crapware.
I also got it for the instant updates almost as soon as it's mentioned. When an update is announced for a non Nexus device, it takes a million years for it to reach the devices.. Jelly Bean was said to be rolling out for the GS2 in February yet it still hasn't reached any of the UK carriers.

Back to the question. Is it a good deal? It definitely is a great deal. I don't regret buying it at all. So what if it lacks 4G, HSPA+ is more than enough for me.

But since you're only 2 months away from Google I/O, you might as well wait. Unless you're urgent.

Hope what I've said has helped.

The N4 is 3 months old, and despite what rumors you may see (or been told by others that they saw them) you've got about 9 months to go before the next one comes out. Google does a Nexus phone every 12 months. If you want to wait 9 months then you should wait. The only problem is that by the time it's released/sold out/re-stocked, and you get your hands on one, you could wait another 10 or 11 months and get the N6. If you like the phone, you should just get one.

Google will not release the Nexus 5 in May. Fall is likelier. I would go with the Nexus 4. How much will the HTC One be on a 2 year contract? Almost as much as the Nexus 4 is off contact. Carrier bloatware and manufacturer contaminated Android versus the pure Android experience. HTC One does look sharp, but for me it isn't worth the trade off.

Me personally Yes, I would buy my Nexus 4 again. Touchwiz and Sense are crap, and all the new features in the Galaxy S4 are kind of gimmicky. (I'd have to say I'm a little disappointed with the S4 release)

It really comes down to what you want, I came from an iphone 4 and I knew I wanted no bloat ware, no manufacturer skins, timely updates, and I wanted to be free of contract. The Nexus 4 meets all my needs, plus it looks sexy! :)

If things go as planned, I'll get a Nexus 4 next month. There may be better phones if price is no concern and you only look at hardware, but when I consider the whole package, the Nexus 4 is the clear winner. The right size, as good a display as I can practically appreciate, stock android with undelayed updates, no carrier bloatwarez, no carrier SIM lock, and a reasonable unsubsidized price.

+1 google will not release a new nexus 4 in may. they will release nexus7 2 in may and maybe a phablet 5-6 inch device. I am just speculating.

I want pure Android experience so i would buy a nexus even though there are high end carrier devices.
I know HTC One/S4 has some cool software features, its still not cool enough for me to leave Nexus brand

Even if a Nexus 5 came out in May, good luck getting your hands on one. They'll be sold out worldwide in 5 minutes, and even if you were lucky enough to get your order in that first wave, I don't think it would ship for a month. Is the HTC One even available, and I don't think the GS4 will make it into consumer's hands for a month or two. You'll see modest gains with those phones, but it will cost you. If I was buyiing a smartphone today, I would buy a Nexus 4 again.

addendum: Wired magazine called the S4 "boring." The Samsung Galaxy S4 Is Completely Amazing and Utterly Boring | Gadget Lab | Wired.com Nothing mind boggling with the new smartphones, because they are all just so darn good. The things is, though, because of the pure android experience and having all the current updates first, the last word I would use to describe the N4 is "boring,"

The hardware on the Nexus 4 is excellent and far from being outdated. I personally just got mine last month and I couldn't be happier. As others have said, Google is not likely to release a new Nexus phone (whatever it will be called) until the fall, so that's still a while. If you want pure Android, this is the phone to get.

I think the overall specs of the Nexus 4 trump the other phones, they all have their flaws (HTC One camera etc). I don't think that a 720p vs 1080p screen really matters at this size, obviously it does on a 40/50" TV or computer screen, but not on a 4.7-5" phone. Plus it is now shipping in 3-5 days, so I'll sell my iP4S either through o2 recycle (best price) or through eBay.

I'll likely root it out of the box.

Thanks for the help!

Google will not release the Nexus 5 in May.

He's probably mistaken for the motorola X phone that is rumored to be announced at that time.

i'm hoping its real and if rumors of a customize your order, key lime pie (or a guarantee one sw level upgrade), sd card slot, super maxx hd like battery, etc, then i would guess that will be basically a high end nexus and the nexus 5 will probably be something like the nexus 4 is where is lacks a few features.

that motorola x phone already surfaced and it's not Nexus 5 just a regular mid-range Motorola phone ! And as for Nexus 5 get it over NO Nexus 5 till November 2013!

Nothing beats a Nexus. Nothing. The best deal for sure.

Considering everything, comparing the N4 to any other current phone is like comparing a tangerine to a rhinoceros. You just can't get both the hardware spec and first to update vanilla android (can't put a value on that) in any other package, not to mention the unlocked stock status that still includes warranty.

I'd go for the Nexus 4 if you like what it has to offer. When it comes to the Nexus 5 rumors, I'm actually concerned about the growing screen size trend. I don't want a bigger phone. I think the size of the Nexus 4 is great.

The nexus 4 is about the most future proof nexus to date. If your not counting lte or an sd slot, then you can say it truly was a no compromise phone, and it's still a beast now. Both Samsung nexuses had dated but comparable hardware for there times and were quickly left behind. Not the case with the nexus 4, it was launched as one of the most powerful phones on the market. It going to be supported with official updates longer than the s4 and htc one, I can guarantee that. And in real world usage, I doubt that snapdragon 600 is going to make a noticeable difference.

This thing is lightning, and the screen is gorgeous. As it should be, it's the same tech that's used for Apples retina displays. And it has the friggen loudest loud speaker off any phone I've ever had!

Overall unless you want a killer camera, I'd recommend it over the gs4 or htc one. That being said the N4's camera isn't bad at all, it's just not going to break any records for picture quality. I'm happy with it but alot of people complain about its image quality.

Part of why I got this phone is that if I wanted to satiate my urge to upgrade for very little rational reason, I think this phone will fetch a good price used for quite a while still.
