is it worth getting an Epic now?

I say wait. I've had the Epic 4G since launch and have always enjoyed it and I still love it to death, just want 2.2 and haven't had the balls to root it yet. I've had no major problems with the phones GPS (fixed) or the battery life (as long as its managed well). However like others have said, the dual core processors are coming out full steam ahead, and they are going to make everything seem slow again. Remember how fast the G1 felt?

Hmm that is true... I love the epic and yes i am going to root it. So ill prob wait until mwc and see over the Q2-4 and see whats going to be pushed out. If is another phone that can top the epic beastyness then i will try it, but I havent seen anything that can, so far. the galaxy 2 isnt appealing to me just bcuz of the candy bar design and no keyboard. But hopefully HTC or LG or even Samsung can push a phone that is similar to the epic, but with gingerbread.
or even the rumor blackberry android phone.

Is it worth getting an Epic now?

NO. get a phone that GPS works on and actually gets updates to the OS that work. EVO Shift has a keyboard and will probably be better hardware/software package. Or Droid Incredible.

Just my opinion running Epic with a 2.2 ROM with similar problems to other 2.2 ROMs, though still better than running 2.1 stock.

I think its still worth it, but only if you're willing to root and play with roms. Its pretty much impossible to brick an epic and very easy to root. If you're not willing to root then get a different phone, or wait for the next gen.

I'm using my epic now. Got it from CL. Rooted it the first day with nebula rom and mysterious beast theme. No gps issues or battery life issues really. Phone lasted me over 12 hours today using internet texting and playing zenonia. Totally worth it.

apparently the next Gen galaxy s phones are coming and probably with code that works, and a gps that works! I say wait to see what they unveil FEB 13th.

dammit samsung.

If you like buying a porduct that doesn't work get a samsung phone....

Me and several people bought the crap... GPS doesn't work well. Samsung doesn't routinely update their phone...

If you want to know the true... just get a iphone and jailbreak it... So far everyphone samsung made has major issues....

I just got my Epic on Saturday.

GPS worked great out of the box (luckily). Played with it for two days and then put on DK28, rooted, EXT4, midNIGHT ROM. Had a bit of trouble with a bad flash, easily remedied by Paul627g. I love all the apps I can put on it to customize it to my heart's content.

I have NO regrets, my phone is flying (got 1936 on my Quadrant benchmark), and I LOVE it. :)

If I waited I wouldn't go with a samsung phone, coz samsung support doesnt really exist. Look at the galaxy tab, its gonna be stuck on froyo just like we are stuck on eclair.

That tab looks really nice, im thinking about getting it

Pass on the Epic. Great phone, great hardware, totally unsupported by Samsung and Sprint. Had they put even half the support into it that they give the EVO, I would say it still has a lot of life even in the dual core market. It's a fast, beautiful piece of hardware with awesome photo/video capabilities. Unfortunately, it's crippled by Eclair, no bluetooth-voice support, and all of the enhanced video chat features are only available on Froyo or later.
Waste of money as I see it. Half of the phone's capabilities aren't utilized and to me, that's just criminal.
Wait for the latest/greatest. Give it a few months and you'll see some newer stuff come out.
Sadly, I spend nearly $500 for my Epic. It was supposed to be the best smartphone out there. :(

Everything on my phone works great stock out of the showroom. GPS works fine for 95% of the people getting the phones. Certain apps that rely on very accurate locations my have problems. GPS for driving is good. It is also good enough for apps that require location such as weather.

I think that's an accurate statement (no pun intended). However, it does take quite a bit of time (at times) to get a lock of any sort, and of course there are those of us who like to track runs and such, and it doesn't work for that purpose.

But, nevertheless, it's not functional per what counts as a modern GPS, and should have been fixed a long time ago.

So 1 in 20 people have problems with the GPS. DANG.

Yes you can use the Epic as a media device and WiFi only device if you want.

It would function much like an iPod Touch does with WiFi.

I use my Palm Pre as a media player and WiFi device, / media player.

The Epics hardware will work fine even if you change phones later it would serve well as a media device.

Its just half of year since the epic came out. Do you think I should I even get the phone? It is a really nice phone and there are quite a lot of problems with it. but I am still willing to buy it. OR do you think I should wait for the next gen phones?

Note: I get a full 150 dollars credit in november. So prob by then the epic will drop in price and newer phones will be out.

thank you.
It really depends on what you are looking for in a phone. I think the Epic is an awesome phone and it's a pretty tough act to follow, however, the significant delay of Android 2.2 in the midst of newer android versions coming available have really decreased the satisfaction of lots of Epic owners, including myself.

In my humble opinion, the Epic still is one of the top phones on the market and one of the best phones that has ever been released. One of the big factors that made me choose the Epic over the EVO 4G was the physical keyboard. I am not a virtual keyboard fan, at all. It doesn't really seem like much but the dedicated number row on the Epic's keyboard is sooo convenient.

Well, that's my 2 cents.... hope it helps.

Don't get it if you can wait. In 6 months Honeycomb will be coming out. In the HTC world, that means they'll have it on their devices within 8 months. So, in August we'll have phones with a version of Honeycomb... So.... WAIT =D

I really like my Epic but I wouldn't purchase it today, knowing what I know now.
