Is launcher 3 designed to hide calls or texts

I keep seeing used phone and also messaging but when I go to messages there's nothing there

Launchers have nothing to do with the Phone or messaging apps. If you see a badge on an icon saying that you have a call or a message, long-press it and you should see information. You usually also get a notification i the pulldown shade.

The app activity doesn't necessarily mean you got a message. The app might have been refreshing other data from the web.
