Is the OnePlus 5 future-proof?

Yes. That will be a good idea. It only depends on they willing to give support to this phone for more than 2 years. if not.... we can only hope the developers' community will remain active for this phone.
 
Not a phone made that basically won't be unusable after about 4 or 5 years. Just the nature of the beast I am afraid.

"Unusable" is a strong word. if you are willing to put up with a little lag, a phone might last a bit more than that (with custom ROMs, of course). My daily driver right now is a Samsung Galaxy Note 1 (GT-N7000), kind of slow, but it works, and with Android M stable (N is still beta).
