Is the Pixel 3 the 2018 Phone of the year?

I’m sure I’ll get flamed, but I think the iPhone XS, Note 9 and Pixel 3/3XL are the top phones in that order due to speed, cameras and overall experience. I have the Pixel 3 and the XS and had the Note 9 for a minute after launch. I think the cameras are a toss up between Pixel and iPhone this year. I prefer the iPhone. I have the Pixel for work. Can’t make an Android my main phone. I always go back to iPhone but like using both.

No reason for you to get flamed for sharing your opinion.

I think you can make a valid case for your ranking. I would also say all 3 are pretty closely clustered together, meaning overall, one is not vastly Superior to the others.

Depends on what your metrics are, but I think it's a two-horse race between the Note 9 and iPhone XS/Max. The Note 9 seems to do everything either very well or extremely well. Doesn't seem to have any real flaws. Same with the iPhone XS/Max.

While I didn't buy the Note 9, I don't think the Pixel 3/XL are as good as it overall for consumers. The camera is great, the software is great, but other than that, the Note just offers too much. I don't think that he Pixel offers enough in either hardware or software to really make it the best phone for most consumers. It's the best phone for a segment of consumers who want the *best* camera and will compromise anything else for it, or for die-hard Google fans who think Google can do no wrong.

The screen on the 3XL needs work. Not bright enough in sunlight, as the new iPhone blows it away in sunlight.

There's a difference between bright enough and brighter. I have no issues veiwng the Pixel in bright sunlight.

I say the pixel 3/XL would win best phone camera of the year, note 9 for jack of all trades, iPhone xs/max for.... iPhones, as for me.... I want the Xiaomi mi mix 3 for it's mid-range price range and slider feature... Speaking of mid-range... OnePlus 6t takes that crown imo

I say yes OR close 2nd. I think the regular Pixel 3 for sure, but closer for the 3XL. Camera and software dig out the win for the top spot, I say.

Outside of the Note, which to me is in a category by itself, what else comes close? XS..? maybe.. 9/9+ nah ...

I think this is a tough year for any phone off the year. The XS... Has issues... But is cool in its own way. The pixels... Has issues... But is cool in its own way. Samsung devices... Sorry, can't go there.

I have the XS Max and the P3xl. I like them both. Each has really good things.. each out me to no end. Cameras are too close to call... Unless you're a pro and use all the little features regularly. .

To me the lean is mostly based on the functions of OK Google and the search integration. Wife with an X and me with the pixel had a test this morning...Hey Siri.. What is that spot in chicken eggs. In seconds Siri responded... Here's some information about sorry in chicken eggs, and offered the list. Did the same with ok Google.. Response in seconds.. Read the first article and offered others to read... And did it over the home mini.

But we each have that 1 sticky subject that irritates is to no end so we threaten to go back to blackberry.

I agree with a lot of your entire post, but this particularly. Mainly because I feel this is where scale tips in favor of the Pixel.

When I look at the devices out this year, I ask who pushed technology forward more as part of my consideration. Without question Pixels lead in camera technology and AI/ML. Two areas of high importance in mobile technology where the rest of the field is trailing Google.

I think the iPhone is the best out of the box experience for most people. Your 12 year old daughter and your 75 year old grandmother can both turn that device on and be up and running in minutes without any real working knowledge about technology at all and have an amazing experience. It's very easy to use, for sure. But I don't really see where they pushed things forward much this year.

IMO, the Note 9 is overpowered for most people and is just overkill for the average consumer. Most people just don't need or desire a stylus with their phones. So then the S9/9+, would make more sense.

I agree with all you say... Except the camera. I have the Max and the P3xl. IMO there is no clear leader.... Unless, like I said... You're a pro and take advantage of all the lesser known features... By lesser known I mean.. Anything beyond point and shoot.

I even figured out how to coexist with an apple watch and Pixel... So I'm happy

True, but they did drop the ball in screen brightness. I have a 3XL and a Xs, and the Pixel isn’t even close in bright sunlight.

Pixel 3 , iPhone xs,note 9,s9 are the best displays on the market ..
I have no issues viewing my 3xl in very bright sunlight . Not that I want to view any phone in the sunlight but need be I have no issues. Read display mate on all those device as the pixel 3xl has screen reflection of 4.3 Wich note is 4.4 and xs is 4.7 so you are not going wrong with any of them .
